Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recently congratulated Islip resident Lt. Justin Hespeler of the FDNY, for in May receiving the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor from President Biden.

While responding to a call in November of 2021, Lt. Hespeler was made aware of a newborn trapped on the second floor of a burning Brooklyn home. Without the protection of a hoseline, and ignoring urgent calls for personnel to evacuate the building, Lt. Hespeler battled through heavy black smoke, zero visibility and high heat, to locate the unconscious 5-week-old and carry him to safety, where EMS administered life-

“Lt. Hespeler’s heroic deeds are truly remarkable and stand as a testament to the selfless courage of first responders,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest national award presented to a public safety officer who has exhibited extraordinary valor above and beyond the call of duty.

Lt. Justin Hespeler is a former United Sates Marine and former member of the NYPD. He joined the FDNY in September of 2005.

PSEG Long Island Reminds Customers To Enjoy Summer Safely

PSEG Long Island reminds customers to keep safety at the forefront as they use electricity to make the most of the season.

“Most of us love to be outside when the weather is warm and the days are long, and many of us utilize electricity to transform our outdoor spaces for the season,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution. “Whether you are using electric lawn equipment, hooking up a sound system for a garden party, or even inflating a bounce house or kids’ swimming pool, it’s important to follow best practices to ensure everyone stays safe.”

PSEG Long Island recommends customers:

· Check that extension cords are correctly rated for the amount of electricity they are to carry and are Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.

· Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous.

Never use power

equipment on wet hedges, grass, shrubs, or in any areas that are damp.

Make sure their work and garden power tools are protected with threepronged grounding plugs, unless they are double insulated.

Contact their town or village hall to confirm that their pool plans meet all local zoning and safety requirements.

Check that no electric devices are so close to the swimming pool that they could accidentally fall into the water.

Ensure that all outdoor outlets have waterproof covers. Outlets that have moisture in them may create a shock hazard.

Keep all ladders far away from electric lines.

PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.

Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny.com/feedli.

Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people to help people. In the past two years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a

significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Preservation Long Island Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary With Special Events And Programs Through December 2023

Preservation Long Island is delighted to announce its 75th year in operation as the only regional notfor-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation on geographic Long Island. From events and exhibitions to preservation advocacy and on-site student education, their wide-ranging programs connect Long Islanders to the region’s diverse and distinctive past.

Originally founded in 1948 as the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, the organization adopted Preservation Long Island as a new name in 2017 to communicate more plainly its commitment to advancing the importance of preserving all facets of the region’s history through advocacy, education, and stewardship of historic sites and collections.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Samanea New York (located at 1500 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY) is partnering with Long Island Cares (www.LICares.org) to help fight food insecurity during the summer through August 6

Long Islanders who purchase a ticket and donate one bag of groceries (containing more than one item) will receive one complimentary ticket per ticket holder to the immersive event as a thankyou for their contribution.

“Long Island has warmly welcomed Beyond Van Gogh into their community since we opened in March, and we are proud to team up with Long Island Cares to give back,” said Justin Paquin, President, Paquin Exhibitions & Theatrical, Division of Paquin Entertainment Group. “Beautiful art can change

how we see the world, and through our partnership with Long Island Cares, hopefully, we can help make sure fewer children go hungry this summer.”

Long Islanders can drop the food donations into the exhibit’s Long Island Cares collection bins during the event. Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.

This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those

first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Michael Dorgan Elected As East Islip’s New BOE President

Michael Dorgan was elected as the East Islip Board of Education’s president for 20232024 during the annual reorganization meeting on July 5. Dorgan, who served as vice president last year, was first elected to the board as a trustee in 2021.

Stephen Ruland, who also joined the board in

2021, was named vice president. Last year’s president, Christopher Zachry, remains a trustee. During the meeting, Dorgan, Ruland, new board trustee Jessica Ciampi and Superintendent Paul Manzo were all sworn in by district clerk Stephanie Parker.

Round Room, LLC., the nation’s largest Verizon Authorized Retailer, announces its TCC and Wireless Zone retailers will be donating 120,000 backpacks with school supplies through the 11th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Since 2013, the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway has provided more than 1.3 million backpacks to children across the U.S. ahead of the upcoming academic year.

On Sunday, July 30 at 1 p.m. local time while

supplies last, more than 1,000 TCC and Wireless Zone stores nationwide are inviting local families to their locations to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, a ruler and glue. One backpack per child present will be given away on a firstcome, first-served basis at each participating TCC and Wireless Zone store. Any leftover backpacks at School Rocks Backpack Giveaway events will be donated to local schools of each store’s choice.
