The End. {Part I} This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

Quoting from Adam Smith and Charles Darwin, valedictorian Jack Palmeri extolled competition as essential to productive activity in each person’s life and for whole nations, saying that it furthers innovations, sparks creativity and advances civilization.
“It’s what influenced individuals such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to strive to be their best,” Palmeri said. “Without competition, society would have no drive, no determination and no choices. Competition is what separates the great United States of America from the rest of the world.” Salutatorian Alexandra Belyea reflected on how
her accomplishments throughout her East Islip school career would have been unattainable without the guidance of her teachers, friends and parents, who always told her to be nice, kind and happy and befriend those that would make her a better person. “In the end, people will only truly care about and remember the type of
person you are,” Belyea said. “As we all move past high school, it is crucial to be a positive influence in society and surround yourself with genuinely good people who raise you up instead of pull you down.” Superintendent John Dola encouraged students to pick career paths that would energize them, set their goals high and chase
them with unbridled enthusiasm. “Make good choices and take responsibility for them, and be sure to follow your moral compass,” he said. Board of Education President Christopher Zachry told the graduates that they would fail only if they didn’t believe in themselves through life’s inevitable obstacles and
unexpected events. He stressed that time, unlike money, is a commodity that they can’t afford to lose because it can never be regained. “If there’s something in your heart that you want to do, don’t put it off,” he said. “Don’t waste time. Don’t wait until you’re 25 or 30. Start working towards it now.”

Continuing a new Islip tradition begun last year by Michael Mosca and Dr. Christopher Smalley, the respective principals of Islip High School and Wing Elementary School, the graduating seniors of the Class of 2017 paid a visit to Wing on June 20th. Dressed in their purple and white caps and gowns,
the future alumni walked through the halls and around the playground, interacting with the younger students and reconnecting with their own educational past. To the delight of the children of Wing, the walkers this year included the high school’s Buccaneers mascot.
“We wanted to give our students the opportunity to visit the place where their educational journey began,” said Mosca. “This experience also gives our kindergarten and firstgrade students a glimpse into the future and a goal to strive for.” GENERATIONS INTERACT - The graduating seniors of Islip High School’s Class of 2017 continued last year’s new tradition of walking through of the district’s Wing Elementary School.
