As a result of a competitive process, The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start has received grant funding through the Office of Health and Human Services to establish a Birth-To-Five program to provide education and support services to income eligible pregnant women, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The Birth-to-Five program will offer comprehensive child development, health/ wellness and family support services to promote school readiness by addressing the key domains of language, literacy, math, science, and social and emotional development. The program will also help parents move toward selfsufficiency and facilitate parent engagement in their role as their child’s teacher and advocate through parent training and an emphasis on strong consistent working
relationships that focus on family goals. Denice Karotseris, Director of Head Start/ Early Head Start reminds us that, “90 percent of a child’s brain develops in the first five years of life. The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You
work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.
I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

years ago? Hundreds of people will have to sell their homes. Hundreds of people will have to leave the island on which they grew up. Are these prospective dunes truly worth our residences? There is no guarantee that the mounds of sand will stand the test of time. Most artificial dunes are gone within the year. Only Mother Nature can choose when the sand comes and when the sand goes. This isn’t the first time that the American Government has tried to take our houses. Following Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people wanted to just seize huge swaths of land, basically condemning the city. In what world is tearing down a city more beneficial than trying to rebuild it?
I’m sure Albany has their reasons, but in the case of Fire Island, Eminent Domain is not the best solution. The vast majority of the oceanfront homes went undamaged following Hurricane Sandy. My house, like many others, is one of the structurally sound, oceanfront houses threatened by Eminent Domain. The benefits within rebuilding our houses strongly outweigh the need for a temporary dune. Fire Island, as a community, is urging our representatives to stop talking about Eminent Domain. In theory, it is a good plan; but when enacted, we will all find that it will not succeed. Do the right thing, protect our homes, not our sand.

Eminent Domain can be defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation. What this means is that whenever the government feels like it, they can kick you out of your house and onto the streets. Some people are theorizing that Governor Cuomo will enact Eminent Domain rights on Fire Island. He would do this by forcing oceanfront residents to sell their houses and get out, just so a little sand dune could be built. There have been artificial dunes built in the past, yet they are not there today. They have all been washed away over time. What makes this proposed plan any different than the plan from ten

This was once a summer town where streets could wind unpaved, unbound by keep off signs and plush sod strips and paths were laid by barefoot trips to splintered piers as rusting traps awaited blue claws’ August laps; while boats moored fast to marshes’ edge would lie in wait concealed in sedge for ducks to sail their V shaped wedge; where clammers toiled, each rake applied knee deep to race an ebbing tide; while baited lines on a silt-soft shore reels spinning fast were cast once more; where shacks leaned south to taste the bay, shingles bleaching brown to gray; and boat yards hugged each sheltered lee when gales pruned clean each proud elm tree. This was once a summer town; few streets remain unpaved, unbound.

Jay Fiedler, former NFL Quarterback for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets and Director of the Sports Academy at Brookwood Camps addressed a student assembly at Bridges Academy in West Islip earlier this month about his path to success as a student and professional athlete. Fiedler, from Oceanside, is offering his story of his athletic and academic success as a model for students to follow. “I have good experiences and good memories to share,” Fiedler, who earned a BA Degree in Engineering Sciences at Dartmouth
College said, adding, “I think those experiences can help others achieve their goals. Working hard, working the right way; this is what it’s all about.” His path to success is a story of determination and perseverance. Fiedler was invited to speak about his goals and dreams as a child and to share the importance of healthy choices and good role models. The springtime community events are over, the tally is complete and the verdict is in: Keep Islip Clean’s 25th Anniversary Great American Cleanup was a huge success. Over 2,000 volunteers worked in scores of events and the end result was the
removal of approximately 22 tons of litter and small debris, plus larger items, including tires, car seats and shopping carts. Volunteers also planted about 6,000 flowers through Project Bloom, beautified local beaches, trimmed trees and
generally enhanced their communities. The Great American Cleanup is a signature program of the national organization, Keep America Beautiful. KIC has participated every year since the organization was founded in 1989.
March For Max
On June 14th, the East Islip Community rallied together for their first “March for Max!” Max Berlin is a 7 year-old East Islip resident who has recently been diagnosed with T-ALL, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This rare type of cancer affects the white blood cells, which are a crucial part of our immune system that helps fight infection. Max has been enduring intense chemotherapy, and radiation and frequent long stays at Cohen’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park. As a result, some of Max’s closest friends assembled the “March for Max” to help brighten his day and lift his spirit. One of the parade organizers, Linda Centauro states, “It was our way to show
our unity with love and support. We just wanted to help keep his spirits high as he is fighting this incredibly tough battle. We also wanted to make him feel like the President! That’s how important Max is to us… he’s just like the President.” Community members gathered at the back of JFK Elementary School in East Islip and proceeded down Max’s block, led by the volunteers of the East Islip High School marching band and band teacher Christopher Neske. Over 200 participants donned in “Team Max” t-shirts, sang “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” as Max watched from his front lawn, and donated ices were given out to all. He was presented with “Team Max” trophies,
banners and signs, and waved to the crowd as he took a ride from his favorite ’67 convertible Camaro. Max is an athletic, strong boy who plays lacrosse, baseball and football on the local teams. He is an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Knicks, Rangers and Giants and loves spending time watching his favorite teams with his mom, dad and younger brother Jake. Max is a true fighter and remains optimistic during his treatments. For now, friends and community members are asked to keep, “Hope, Faith, Strength and Courage” for Max and his entire family. Any donations to help support Max’s fight of T-ALL can be sent to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital.

This year’s Annual Dog Wash Fundraiser, hosted by the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center, and sponsored by nonprofit volunteer groups Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., and Unchained New York, was a great success, raising more than $1500 that was donated to the care and comfort of the more than 120 adoptable animals that currently reside at the Animal Shelter. Nearly 200 people participated in the day’s
festivities, which included vendors, raffles and the dog wash. Many volunteers, including Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray, helped to bathe 80 different dogs during the event. “This event is one I love to attend and volunteer at each year. It’s a wonderful example of how the Islip community comes together for a great cause. Businesses are always ready and willing to donate items to be raffled, residents are excited to volunteer and help in any way they can,
