Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably

warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.

Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

friends, the studentmusicians – from excited beginners to adept senior players – displayed their deep love of music and the fruits of the top-notch instruction provided by the district’s music staff. “For many of our students, this is the capstone event,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent

Green. “They’ve worked their way up to section leader, soloist or student conductor. After four years, students develop a strong connection to their classmates and teachers. They see a variety of educators in their four years here, but the constant is their music director. It makes for a very emotional evening.”

At Islip High School’s commencement ceremony on June 25th, skies were cloudy but hearts were clear and full of joy as the 271 members of the Class of 2015 celebrated starting a new chapter in their lives. This was the first class to graduate at Islip’s new, state-of-the-art stadium, which began construction a year ago and was completed just in time for homecoming last October. Close to 1,800 seats were filled with proud families as the seniors walked out through the stadium gates, led by flag bearers, as the high school’s wind ensemble and concert band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” To begin the ceremony, the school’s Swing ensemble provided a sublime choral rendition of The Star-Spangle Banner, leading into a speech by salutatorian Kody Miller. “I am the author of my own tale now,” declared Miller, who touched on his longtime battle with social anxiety and how the senior trip to Spain this year renewed his confidence. “The past is written in pen, but who’s to say we can’t change our future?,” he asked. “As we head into the next chapter, remember it is you who are in control of your own life.” Continuing the literary theme, retiring Board President Mary M. Dennis told each senior to picture his or her life as a book,

with a page now being closed. “You are about to write the next chapter,” she said. “But don’t forget you have a chapter deeply rooted here in Islip.” In his first graduation ceremony as principal, Michael Mosca talked of his discovery of the Islip school community. “I have now learned what it means to be a Buccaneer,” he said, citing numerous positive traits found in this year’s seniors, a group that has persevered and overcome every obstacle. “Trust in everything you have learned so far, and most of all, trust in yourself,” he told his charges. Before leaving the podium, Mosca called up senior Alana Singh to take a selfie photo, to the delight of the audience. Valedictorian Ethan Fields began his speech with a well-deserved list of thanks, expressing gratitude to the teachers, administrators, counselors, Board of Education, and his friends and family. Referencing author David Foster Wallace, Fields challenged his classmates to change their life perspective to a less subjective, more rational and positive outlook that will help them better adapt to adversity. In closing, he told them, “My fellow seniors, I would like to thank you for an incredible four years here at Islip High School. I will never forget the time spent here, and I know we will

all go on to do amazing, incredible things.” Pumping up the energy level even higher, the high school’s senior choral ensemble were backed by a rock trio for an exultant rendition of Van Halen’s Right Now, preceding one final address, from Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel. “This is an excellent point to begin fashioning new goals for your future,” Schnebel told the seniors, whom she described as talented, dedicated, funloving and respectful. “Today is your moment,” she said. “Capture it, celebrate it – you’ve earned it.” Fighting back tears of emotion, Schnebel closed by saying, “Class of 2015, thank you for letting me be a part of your life for so many years. We are so proud of who you have become.” Diplomas were then handed out to each student, tassels were turned and caps were tossed. As the wind ensemble and concert band played Sousa’s “Fairest of the Fair,” the beaming graduates strode out of the stadium in a proud procession. “It took a really long time, but we finally did it,” said one of the newest Islip alumni, Steve Calderon, as he celebrated with his friends, all of who were now ready to turn the page and begin the next part of their life story.

He has participated in NYSSMA all state groups, including the vocal jazz ensemble in 2013, symphonic band in 2014 and the All Eastern symphonic band in 2015. He’s also been a member of Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and participated in all schoolbased music groups as well. Ethan will be attending SUNY Fredonia College in the fall for Music Composition and Sound. He says of himself, “Overall, my career goal is to become both a composer and a sound technician. I would love to write music for performance and media. She said, “People always ask me why I want to do music rather than pursue an academic career in science or math. Music seems to be just about the most difficult of fields out there because there is never a right answer. There are so many interpretations of the same pieces so they can be right or wrong depending on what each performer thinks. It is up to them to decide which one is the correct answer. For me, this is a thrilling challenge. Although it is not easy to put myself under

Circus Comes To Town

Donning traditional red and white caps and gowns, seniors of the Class of 2015 took a step close to reaching their dreams as they graduated from East Islip High School on June 26th. The commencement was held on Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium in front of a crowd of proud administrators and families. Following the processional march into the stadium, Principal Bill Brennen opened the ceremony with words of wisdom for the students to carry with them as they enter their next life chapter. “When you leave here today you cannot predict what is going to happen next,” said Brennen. “Most of you have plans, but rarely does anything go according to plan. When your plan goes astray, don’t sweat it. Sometimes those changes are a blessing in disguise. Change and adapt. Don’t be afraid of what life throws your way. The obstacles between you and your dreams are just small stuff. The truth is, your family and the education that you received here at East Islip have prepared you for those challenges and you are certainly capable of achieving the success you desire.” Reflecting on her

Reaching For Dreams years at East Islip, covaledictorian Lauren Farrell shared a personal experience of facing her fears by donating blood, despite being afraid of fainting. She reminded her classmates to stand up for what is right, even if it is a difficult choice. “Adulthood is right around the corner, and that means big changes in our lives,” said Farrell. “There will be moments of fear and uncertainty, but facing them is necessary to surpassing them. The lesson I learned was about selflessness. I knew I was going to faint before I even walked in that room, but I still did it because I knew it was the right thing to do. I focused on helping others. Doing the right thing even without being rewarded or acknowledged is what distinguishes the heroes among us. Next time you get the chance, do the right thing and be someone’s hero.” Board of Education president Steven Behan said goodbye to the Class of 2015 with a short, heartfelt speech, telling the students to dream big. “Please dream as big as you can,” he said. “Get a plan and get to it. If you help yourself, the people that love you will help you too. Good luck, Class of 2015. Reach for your highest dreams.”

After placing second in discus for Suffolk County, East Islip High School senior Lexi Bolster earned a trip up to Albany to compete at the New York State track and field championships on June 12th-June 13th, where she tossed the discus 98 feet, 10 inches to earn 17th place overall. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. The cast and crew of Islip High School’s production of Catch Me If You Can were awarded the prestigious Best Ensemble award at the 2015 Islip Arts Council Teeny Awards, held June 7th at the Noel S. Ruiz Theater at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. Islip High School was also among a small group of schools selected to perform as part of the awards ceremony, which was preceded by a redcarpet event with local politicians, performers and

celebrities. The Teeny Awards is a student arts recognition program sponsored by the Islip Arts Council. Its mission is to recognize and celebrate the talented students who participate in theater across the Town of Islip, encourage them to pursue their dreams, and to stimulate local interest while developing an understanding of the value of theater education in a well-rounded school curriculum. Islip was nominated in a total of six categories.

Teachers Honored Continuing an annual tradition, East Islip High School’s varsity boys basketball program recognized the dedication of the district’s elementary school teachers who inspired them. The Class of 2015 graduating seniors on the team paid a surprise visit to their former teachers at Connetquot,

John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools, presenting each them with a bouquet of flowers in their classrooms, or outdoors at field day, in the case of JFK. “The basketball team just wanted to make sure that the elementary teachers are never forgotten,” said coach Robert Schwender.

“Having the opportunity to go back to see their teachers is a very emotional event, and it’s a great moment for the teachers, too, to see the end result of their work, in the person of the graduating seniors. All of our teachers have left a lasting impact and taken part in the molding of each student-athlete who graduates from East Islip.”

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently hosted their annual Dog Wash Fundraiser, offering to wash resident’s furry friends for a $10 donation, which benefits the shelter. Volunteers shampooed, rinsed and towel dried over 50 dogs of all shapes and sizes. As in previous years, this year’s fundraiser was sponsored by Live.Love. Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group. The group also sold merchandise and raffled off over 30 different prizes, collecting a total of $2,982 in donations. Students clad in red, white and blue joined members of the local American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 in a march down the school driveway, followed by a solemn flag-raising ceremony. Youth Board Sworn In Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently presided over the swearingin ceremony for the new officers of the Islip Youth Board. The Youth Board was created in 1975 by the

Islip Town Board, and is dedicated to serving the members of the Islip community who are under 21 years of age. The Youth Bureau and Youth Board work with a local network of youth

agencies to provide youth development/delinquency prevention services. To ensure advocacy for our Town’s youth, one-third of the Board’s members must be drawn from young volunteers.
