s East Islip High School’s Class of 2016 stepped onto the football field on June 24th, taking their central role in the school’s 89th commencement, they also took a giant step in the game of life, ready to pursue new dreams and new destinies. We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Sunshine of My Life
As East Islip High School’s Class of 2016 stepped onto the football field on June 24th, taking their central role in the school’s 89th commencement, they also took a giant step in the game of life, ready to pursue new dreams and new destinies. After the initial processional music from the high school orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Caleb Shulman and Shannon Ransom, followed by Jon Sawyer Coffin singing “The StarSpangled Banner.” Rising above the wind, a quartet of Danielle Pafundi, Karli Pipitone, Ashley Karlin and Noelia Vazquez delivered a rendition of the school’s alma mater. “Find what you are passionate about,” Principal William Brennen urged his former charges. “Follow your dreams now, before life gets in the way. Walking the Wing The graduating seniors of Islip High School’s Class of 2016 began a new tradition on June 21st, taking a “Graduation Walk” down the hallways of the district’s Wing Elementary School. Following that morning’s graduation rehearsal, the students put on their caps and gowns, were bused over to Wing and paraded through the halls in an effort to encourage the importance of an education for the enthusiastic younger students. The new initiative was spearheaded by Michael Mosca and Dr.
Christopher Smalley, the respective principals of the high school and Wing. “Dr. Smalley and I wanted to start this tradition to allow the whole educational experience to come full circle,” said Mosca. “Many of our graduating seniors began their educational careers in the halls and classrooms of Wing Elementary. For our seniors, it’s an opportunity to revisit the place it all began and to see how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown as people. For our kindergarten and firstgrade students, they get
to see the fruits of their labor and how their public school journey will end. Their smiles and excitement were real as they watched the seniors parade past them. This is an experience I think both our youngsters and our graduates will remember for the rest of their lives.”
