Town Of Islip Recognized With Folio Award For “The Blue Point Oyster” Documentary

Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that two of the Town’s employees working in the Town’s Public Information Office have been honored with a prestigious Folio award for the outstanding documentary, “The Blue Point Oyster.”

Those employees are Communications Director, Caroline Smith and Videographer, Gary Licker. The award was presented by the Fair Media Council at their annual awards ceremony held at Gatsby on the Ocean on June 23, 2023.

“The Blue Point Oyster” is an exceptional documentary that highlights the Town of Islip’s efforts to enhance shellfish production and improve the water quality of the Great South Bay. This insightful film underscores the Town’s commitment to environmental preservation and emphasizes the integral role of community engagement in achieving these significant milestones.

The Fair Media Council, widely recognized as one of the oldest and most successful media watchdogs in the country, bestowed this honor upon Smith and Licker for their exceptional work in producing a documentary that captivated audiences and inspired action. The Folio award serves as a testament to the Town’s unwavering dedication and ability to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our environment.

We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and all of our Town’s dedicated staff and the positive impact they have made.”

Caroline Smith, producer of the documentary, also conveyed her gratitude for the recognition of the documentary. She added, “Receiving this Folio award from the Fair Media Council is a tremendous honor for the Town, and this has been something that has been an unwavering commitment on the part of Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. ‘The Blue Point Oyster’ documentary has allowed us to shed light on the Town of Islip’s environmental initiatives and highlight our community’s dedication to preserving our natural resources. We are grateful for the platform this award provides in spreading our message to a wider audience.”

Gary Licker, who shot, edited and directed the documentary, shared his enthusiasm for the award and its significance, saying, “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition for this documentary on Long Island’s Great South Bay. ‘The Blue Point Oyster’ project has been a labor of love, and I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase the Town of Islip’s commitment to environmental conservation. This award underscores the importance of protecting our environment and the essential role of community engagement in achieving this shared objective.”

The Town of Islip Shellfish Hatchery, under the supervisor of DEC Commissioner Marty Bellew, produces nearly 25% of the total number of caged oysters harvested in New York State. Each oyster cleans nearly 50 gallons of water per day.

The Town of Islip extends its gratitude to the Fair Media Council for this recognition. The Town encourages individuals and communities to support and actively participate in endeavors aimed at enhancing shellfish production and safeguarding the water quality of the Great South Bay.

Islip EXCEL Students Learn Wilderness Survival Skills

Islip Middle School students in the EXCEL program recently participated in a two-part wilderness survival course taught by John Scott, a

forest ranger from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In the first session, the students learned about the job of a

forest ranger before delving into survival skills such as how to use a compass, make a splint, improvise a stretcher and retrace their footsteps, as well as

the value of resilience, team communication and maintaining morale. They had the chance to test out their new skills in the second session with mock

training exercises.

“My idea for this course is teaching the students wilderness survival to help them in case they are with

somebody who gets hurt while they’re camping, so they can get out to the road and get some help,” Scott said.

Islip’s Sherwood Raises Over $18,000 At Second Boosterthon

Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School recently hosted its second annual Boosterthon, working with the school’s PTA to raise $18,632, far above the school’s pledged goal of $17K. Over the course of a week, students learned about gratitude, bravery and perseverance, all while having fun and raising money.

The fundraiser culminated in a communitybuilding Fun Run activity, in which students ran, walked, hopped and danced around the school’s track while a DJ

provided entertainment and encouragement. With each lap, faculty, staff and parent volunteers helped the children record how far they ran. Many of the participants ran over 30 laps. As a special reward for her spirited students, Principal Briana James held an entertaining “Pie the Principal” and “Dunk the Principal” event, enduring pies to the face and a bracing dip in a dunk tank. The money raised will be used for the National Circus Project, a program designed to provide fun

challenges that teach patience and self-discipline in a fun, supportive way, as well as to fund a new outdoor classroom for Sherwood. The latter project will include a flexible seating area, collaborative learning spaces, a musical space, and areas for exploration and creativity.

“In addition to fostering creativity, having this outdoor learning space will provide opportunities for our children to investigate and problem solve, which are valuable lifelong skills,” James said.

Students Explore Culinary And Historical Sights On Walking Food Tour

Islip Middle School students – including sixth graders from the district’s EXCEL program and seventh graders from family and consumer science classes – recently took a historical walking food tour on Islip’s Main Street. Students were accompanied by EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson, FACS teacher Natalie DeSena, Islip High School Functional Academics teacher Melissa Horn and Historical Society of Islip Hamlet President Catherine Romano.

The participating middle schoolers began their day with an educational visit to Manhattan Sweets Bakery. They learned about baking techniques and observed the machinery used to create beautiful pastries. Lunch at The Pizzeria was next, where students took a tour of the kitchen and got an up-close demonstration of pizza making and dough

tossing. The Pizzeria treated the students to a complementary pizza lunch and soda. The tour concluded with a stroll to Coyle’s Ice Cream, where they learned how delicious homemade ice cream is made and enjoyed some sweet treats.

This year, the Islip Historical Society and students from the Functional Academics program provided the middle schoolers with a glimpse into the rich history of Islip’s Main Street. On the walk to the restaurant establishments, stops were made along the many historic markers on Main Street where students were informed about significant events that occurred in the town’s past.

“Because they were talking about consumer and family science, we wanted to make sure that we covered the Main

Street history that was significant, as well as some of the food-based or marine-based history,” Romano said. “We do research in the community for significant people, places or events, shown by the blue and yellow markers on or in front of some of the buildings. We have 30 markers up so far, and we have two more in progress that will identify the summer home of former Mayor Wagner of New York City and William Macy’s home.

“This field trip provided students with an ideal way to connect with their community and provided a behind-thescenes glimpse of business owners pursuing their passions,” DeSena said. “Our thanks to Manhattan Sweets, The Pizzeria, Coyle’s Ice Cream, and the Islip Historical Society for making it a huge success.”

It seems like yesterday that we were throwing confetti, tooting horns, and saying goodbye to 2022. Today, we are just about halfway done with 2023. That means…it’s time for a midyear review.

I do love this time of the year. It’s a great opportunity to evaluate my progress both in business and my personal life. A midyear review is not just a list of tasks accomplished or goals to reach; it’s a chance to look at the path we are on in our businesses and personal lives and make changes while we still can.

Legislator Steven J Flotteron recognized this year’s honorees, Marijane (MJ) & Michael (Mickey) Voltz. They are both second generation supporters of the organization, where Mickey’s parents, Kim and John Voltz were honored by Hospice in 2006 and MJ’s mother, Marie Jordon, was one of the first nurses at Hospice of the South Shore. The Voltz’s small business, Super You Inc. was the proud sponsor and theme of Hospice Care Network’s Children’s Bereavement Camp in 2006.

product or service. It also allows you to check in with your employees, partners, and suppliers. Are they motivated and inspired, or do they appear disengaged. This week is the best time to ask them what they need to achieve their goals in the second half of the year. Teamwork makes the dream work!

At the same time, it’s important to do a personal review. How are you feeling? What’s keeping you up at night? What are the biggest

challenges that are in front of you? The balance between work and personal life is critical to success for both parts of your life! You can’t pay your personal bills if business is bad, and you can’t succeed in business if you become disabled.

If you claim that you don’t have time for your health, hobbies, and relationships, find the time! If you’ve been thinking about learning a new language, reading more books, or joining a running club, do it!

If you’ve had success reaching your midyear milestones, make sure you take time to celebrate! The recognition you give to yourself and the people around you will fuel your motivation and selfconfidence going forward.

As I said, I love this time of year because it reminds me of how fortunate I am, and we all are, to live on Long Island in the summertime.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player co-ed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine.

The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. The

Registration is FREE and is open until the roster is full. Players must be 14 years old or older to participate. Players of all skill levels are welcome to play and will be seeded accordingly. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree

it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.

The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And Caregivers On July 11

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The in-person workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing

and Communications Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing sleep quality,

improving cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.

The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are co-sponsors. Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.
