American Flag Etiquette The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate their independence on July 4. The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag. Raising And Lowering The Flag According to USFlag. org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that many parents are unaware that common sparklers can burn at temperatures between 1,200 and 2,000 F or more depending on the fuel and oxidizer used. That is hot enough to melt some metals and can cause third-degree burns. Despite this, sparklers are commonly handed out to children at celebrations without anyone advising on proper safety use. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says sparklers cause 27 percent of all fireworksrelated injuries. Parents may want to look for safer options for kids, like noisemakers used during New Year’s celebrations. Confetti, water guns and balloons also can be relatively safe ways for children to participate in July 4th fun.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.
In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice.

The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner,
6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.
Rhonda was chosen as Model Citizen of the month from local Magazine editor John Dowling for the efforts and work she has been doing in the community. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. As we continue to see re-openings and normalcy, EFF will be searching for volunteers and interns to assist with multiple projects. FASNY Urges New Yorkers To Play It Safe This Fourth Of July The Fourth of July may feel a little different this year due to COVID-19. Smaller barbecues, less parties and limited celebrations filled with displayed fireworks. Although sparklers and similar items can be bought and sold in much of New York State, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges residents to let professionals handle the fireworks. FASNY reminds New Yorkers that although sparklers may look harmless, and almost toy-like, they are incredibly harmful and can cause serious injury and fires. “Fireworks and sparkling
devices are extremely dangerous in the hands of non-professionals,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “Although they seem fun, fireworks and sparkling devices can cause serious bodily harm and even death. Fireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone proper training.” The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe 3rd degree burns. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sparklers cause roughly 25 percent of all fireworks-related emergency room visits,
the most of any type of fireworks device. A 2019 report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that in 2018, fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,100 injuries. Between June and July of 2018, emergency rooms treated 5,600 patients for firework related injuries. Children under the age of 15 accounted for 36 percent of these injuries. According to the report, forty-four percent of the emergency departmenttreated injuries were burns, with the most common injury to hands, fingers, and arms. “Rather than take the risk of getting
hurt, FASNY is urging New Yorkers to either attend a fireworks display in their town or county -- while maintaining proper protocols -- or to watch one of the professional shows that will be televised or live-streamed,” said President Klein. “On behalf of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, and all of the dedicated firefighters who serve the Empire State, we wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July,” said President Klein, “And should there be an emergency or unsafe situation, we urge everyone to call 911. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Photo courtesy of Elaine Faith Thompson May this service bring us a sense of loyalty to our country ...” The Boy Scouts presented the flags starting with the 1775, Pine Tree Flag which was adopted for all colonial vessels and was the banner carried by the Continental forces in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Southern colonies from 1776 to 1777, used the Snake Flag. In the latter part of 1775 there was a single flag for all thirteen colonies with
thirteen stripes with the cross of St. George and St. Andrew which was raised over General Washington’s headquarters in Massachusetts. The next flag that was presented, had thirteen stars and stripes because on June 14, 1777, Congress declared that this flag represent the United States. In 1795 two additional stars and Stripes were added. When Francis Scott Key saw that flag flying over Fort McHenry, on September

14, 1814 (in the War of 1812), he wrote the “Star Spangle Banner”. The Congress, on July 14, 1818 made the number of stripes thirteen and twenty stars, and declared that a new star would be added for each state thereafter admitted. The next flag that was presented was the one with forty eight stars, that flew over this nation until just before the Vietnam War. The last flag presented was our present fifty star flag.
The American Flag is the heritage of people of the United States. The greatest significance of this Flag, lies in the influence it has in the hearts and minds of millions of people. The Elks is the only fraternal organization to require observance of “Flag Day”. In July of 1908, the Grand Lodge of this order, in Dallas, Texas, then assembled, provided for the annual nationwide observance of “Flag Day” on the 14th of June in each year, in every lodge. The Islip Elks Lodge 2533 ceremony at the American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 was very patriotic. They were joined in celebration with veterans from the Post 411. Boy Scout troop 207 assisted in the presentation of the flags. The ceremony was presided over by Elks Exhalted Ruler Joe D’Angelo. This years celebration was scaled down due to the COVID-19. The purpose of this ceremony was to honor our country’s Flag, to celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and to recall the achievements attained beneath its folds.The fraternal aims of the Elks are to inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to promote the welfare and happiness of mankind; uphold our country and its laws: and the spirit of American patriotism.
