Artists On The Lane 65th Anniversary

South Bay Art Association is proud to be celebrating the 65th Anniversary of Artists on the Lane, one of the longest running art fairs in the country.

A 4th of July tradition in the heart of picturesque Bellport Village, artists travel from across the country to showcase their talents with art lovers and collectors. Awardwinning fine artists and artisans line the iconic Bellport Lane each 4th of July with paintings,

For 65 years, South Bay Art Association, a volunteer run nonprofit organization, has coordinated this exciting event to bring arts and culture to the community. Exhibitors donate works of art for a raffle benefitting our Student Scholarship Fund which will be awarded to students this November at the 28th Annual Nita Elder Student Scholarship Show at the Bellport

East Islip’s LEGO Girls robotics team finished their impressive season by competing at the FIRST Lego League Challenge Invitational at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. This American Robotics Open Championship event showcases top robotics teams from across the United States competing by displaying their core values while achieving excellence and innovation in robot performance, robot design and an innovation project.

The LEGO Girls, a rookie team of fourth-grade John F. Kennedy Elementary School, students Jayne Elliott, Sonali Kamath and Antonia Rezza, wowed the judges with their project and robot presentations. The East

Islip trio advanced to the Invitationals after finishing in the top five of 100 FLL Long Island Challenge teams this season in the 9-14 age bracket. Their season accomplishments include first place Robot Performance Award and Core Values Award wins at the Long Island qualifiers; a first place Engineering Excellence Award, Zebra Award (a special recognition from FLL referees) and invitation to the LSC Invitational Nationals at the Long Island Championships; and a team event trophy at the LSC Invitational.

An important part of the FIRST Lego League is the core value of impact. The LEGO Girls worked to impact their community by researching energy

usage in their school and proposing ideas to make improvements. Those ideas we shared with their class, STEAM teacher and principal, and the team’s efforts have been recognized by JFK as well as the East Islip Board of Education.

“There are over 20,000 FLL Challenge teams in the U.S. and only about 1.5% of those teams have the opportunity to compete in post season tournaments, so this is quite an achievement for the LEGO Girls,” said team coaches Sunil and Vindhya Kamath. “The team had a fabulous rookie year and accomplished a lot. They are very proud of all that they have done this season.”

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! Memorial Rocks Placed At Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park In Islip

To mark Fentanyl Awareness Day (May 9) last month, parents who had lost children to the fentanyl and overdose epidemic painted memorial rocks with their children’s names and photos. These rocks were created to illustrate the number of people in the United States who die each day due to fentanyl poisoning and were displayed at a press conference with Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and Long Island Coalition on Alcohol and Drug Dependence on May 9 at the Suffolk County Legislature.

After being on display at the Suffolk County Legislature William H. Rogers Building for the past month, the rocks found a new permanent home at “Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park”, a serene respite for reflection and inspiration located on the grounds of Seatuck National Wildlife Preserve, 550 South Bay Ave in Islip.

“We did this as an act of awareness and also a remembrance and tribute to our children,” said Lori Carbonaro of Selden, who lost her son Nicholas in 2014. “Our children are not just what they died of. They are more than that.”

“We thought that the rocks belong here under the Angel Tree of Remembrance in this park that is a place of healing and a place of contemplation,” said Paulette Phillipe of Mattituck, who created Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) after her grandson Gabriel died of a fentanyl overdose in 2010. “What better place for these rocks to be?” she added.

“I believe that it will be a comfort to parents to visit the garden and see their child’s name and face on a rock,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018. “It may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world, ‘I was here.’” Fentanyl and other opioids are fueling the worst drug crisis in the history of the United States. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in the United States more than 1,500 people per week die from an overdose of some kind of opioid. What’s more, during 2020 and 2021, New York’s opioid death rate exceeded the national death rate and 2022 statistics promise to be no better.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for people 18-45 years of age.

This week volunteers from The RMR Group in Mineola helped to manicure the park and plant some donated flowers. Town To Enact Quality Of Life Court

Town of Islip residents will hopefully be able to resolve town code violations locally at Town Hall through the Town’s Quality of Life Court, rather than traveling to 5th District Court in Ronkonkoma. At Tuesday’s Town Board meeting, the Islip Town Board unanimously approved the first step, advertising for a public hearing to enact Local Law 4, establishing chapter 69 of the Islip

Town code, entitled “Bureau of Administrative Adjudication.”

“This will help us address many of the quality-of-life issues here in our Town, and resolve them quickly, conveniently and directly with our residents. Far too often, these matters get hung up in District Court, being postponed repeatedly, rather than being addressed and resolved. The objective is to answer any additional

questions residents may have, with the goal being compliance,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. The court will address civil violations such as violations for decks; pools; un-registered vehicles; litter and debris and building permits.

Proceedings are expected to occur twice a month, and will be handled by a rotation of four administrative law judges appointed. Representatives

from the Town’s various departments will be on hand to facilitate the process. Town of Islip’s court is anticipated to begin in 2025. This is something that is already being done in the towns of Huntington and Babylon. Public comment can be made during the hearing set for Tuesday, July 18th, 2023 at 2 pm at Islip Town Hall, or to the Islip Town Clerk via email at townclerk@islipny.gov.

Cadets Sworn-In To Town Of Islip Law Enforcement Training Academy

Six cadet Peace Officers were recently swornin to the Town of Islip’s 14-week New York State certified Law Enforcement Academy program, led by the Town’s NYS certified instructors.

The robust Academy has been built from the ground up, to better prepare recruits and current officers for service here in our Town and beyond, by providing classroom instruction in law, ethics, communication, daily defensive tactics, as well as de-escalation, Narcan, CPR and First Aid training.

“We are so proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable instructors for the invaluable training they provide, and look forward to welcoming the cadets and officers who complete their training and emerge better equipped to serve the public,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

In addition to training Town of Islip Park Rangers, Harbormasters, Fire Marshalls and Long Island MacArthur Airport Security Officers, the Islip program also provides NYS Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) to area peace and police officers, and is a recommended program to outside law enforcement agencies by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

“We have watched with pride as our Academy has grown to become one of the ‘go to’ training facilities in the area, and remain committed to providing best-in-class training to keep our communities safe,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Islip High School Recognizes 25 Students Earning Seal Of Biliteracy

Islip High School recently recognized 25 remarkable students for earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy

during a ceremony in the school’s cafeteria. This prestigious honor is bestowed on high school

graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more

languages in addition to English. The Seal is affixed to each student’s diploma and high school transcript.

Seniors Nikita Cook, Jessica Hagihara and Brianna Henning earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian; Nicolas Cerna, Mia Crespo, Ahdalia Davies, Jhey Dizon, Rebecca Elie, Daiana Fuentes Velasquez, Estefany D. Gonzalez, Oscar Guerrero, Diego Guevara, Kayley Guzman Morales, Maria J. Jaramillo Placencio, Rachael Keyes, Jaleesa Marmol, Kathleen Ortiz Blandin, Juan Pantaleon, Simon Ramirez, Stella Reagan, Kacey Schassberger, Abigail Sosa Flores, Stephanie Vega and Brielle Zink earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish; and Emilio Shahib earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian with a pending Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. Additionally, junior Jessica Villavicencio Alvarenga was recognized as a Seal candidate demonstrating proficiency in Spanish.

The ceremony, Islip’s sixth since initiating the Seal of Biliteracy program, was overseen by Seal of

Biliteracy advisers Sarah Ito, Karen Maisano, Claudia Osorio and Giuseppa Prainito, with speeches from Coordinator of World Language/ENL Rabia Hirji, Principal Lara Gonzalez and Superintendent Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara. The certificates were handed out by Dr. O’Hara and board of education President Philip Dineen.

“This is an incredible achievement,” Dr. O’Hara said. “Last year at this ceremony, we had 12 students earn the Seal of Biliteracy. This year we have 25. That says a lot about our teachers, our students and our families. To the students, I’d like to say that being bilingual or multilingual is a gift, but it’s not a gift that was given to you, it was a gift you earned, and you should be very proud of that. Make sure you continue to learn. Be sure to use this gift for the benefit of the people around you and the good of society.”

CADETS SWORN-IN TO TOWN OF ISLIP LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING

ACADEMY - Six cadet Peace Officers were recently sworn-in to the Town of Islip’s 14-week New York State certified Law Enforcement Academy program, led by the Town’s NYS certified instructors.
