The Good Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even.

Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days.

You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go.

My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose.

In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings).

But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever.

These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Downtowns To Receive Grants The Islip Town Board voted recently on four resolutions that would enable several downtown areas in Islip Town to receive grant funding. The downtown portions of Bay Shore, Islip Terrace, Islip, and Holbrook will each be awarded grant funding in varying amounts, which will be used to help make our downtowns more attractive to shoppers and businesses alike. As part of Suffolk County’s Downtown Revitalization Program the Town and the County will contribute equal shares to each hamlet to help pay for the desired projects, as decided upon by the local Chambers of Commerce.

“Healthy downtown areas provide an economic boost that simply can’t be attained through other means, and so the Town is proud to administer these funds to our local Chambers,” said Councilman Steve

Flotteron. “The jobs and atmosphere provided by thriving downtown businesses is an essential part of Islip Town’s character.

Everyone benefits when our downtowns succeed.”

Bay Shore is set to receive $30,000 from both the Town and the County, which will be allocated toward street lighting and sidewalk improvement on the east side of Third Avenue, between Union Boulevard and Mechanicsville Road.

In Islip Terrace, portions of Carleton Avenue between Andrew Avenue and Fisher Avenue will benefit from $35,750 from both the Town and the County. The funds will be used to improve sidewalks, drainage, curbing, and other projects that will improve the local walkways.

Islip Hamlet’s grant funding will total $70,000; $35,000 each from the

Town and County. The municipal parking lot will receive improvements and upgrades to its curbing and lighting, which will benefit shoppers and restaurant patrons.

Holbrook’s downtown area will receive the largest of the four grants, with both the Town and County each contributing $80,000 toward the repair and improvement of the walkways near the intersection of Main Street and Furrows Road.

The money raised was donated to Friends of Flax Pond, which promotes stewardship and preserves the natural beauty, ecological significance and distinctive resources of Flax Pond and the surrounding coastal areas.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Wednesday, July 23rd, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers.

Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:30 a.m.

Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately 2.5 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease

Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Parents, administrators and award sponsors were on hand to congratulate these outstanding young scholars, athletes and role models on being recipients of numerous awards and

“These scholarships help our students pay for college costs and textbook expenses,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer, who has organized and hosted the ceremony for the past 13 years. “Many of our sponsors have been with us for many years, and the students were very grateful for the opportunity to be

Nowakowski and Matt Talamo were named AllCounty; Frank Artusa earned All-Division status; and Joe Cacciatore, Dave Carroll, Andrew Hopkins and Jon Matros were named All-League. Their coach, Michael Drozd, was named the SCBTCA Division II, League III Coach of the Year.

“Recorder Karate is a wonderful supplement to our third-grade music curriculum at Connetquot,” explained Murphy. “The recorder is an invaluable tool for teaching musicianship and preparing students for the instrumental program.

By earning recorder belts, it engages students in independent practicing and rewards their hard work.

Nearly every morning before school, I have several students come to the music room hoping to perform and earn a belt song that they practiced at home. It’s a wonderful

feeling for me, as their music teacher, to see the excitement and love of music that our Connetquot Recorder Karate members demonstrate.”

“At the end of the magnificent concert and this school year’s training, the children truly earned the highest recognition of ‘black belt’ players,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “The Connetquot community is grateful to Mr. Murphy for developing this fabulous program, which will remain in the memories of both the students who performed and those in attendance.

For East Islip’s boys varsity tennis team, it was a memorable season that ended with being named League III and Division II champions.

They went 11-1 in league play, and 13-3-3 overall, earning them a spot as the fifth seed out of the 52 teams in Suffolk County’s Section 11 team tennis playoffs. After a first-round bye, the Redmen defeated Huntington, 5-2, in a May

The talented thirdgraders of Connetquot Elementary performed the school’s first Recorder Karate concert on June 4th, engaging the audience of parents, friends and younger students with a variety of tunes from familiar favorite “Hot Cross Buns” to a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Band leader John P. Murphy helped educate the audience by narrating throughout the performance, explaining techniques such as breathing patterns and finger placements used to create the concert’s melodies.

Grant Challenge Champs The Gold Coast Arts Center is thrilled to announce that their previously reported challenge grant goal posed by the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation - which stated that if the center could raise $30,000 by June 15th, the foundation would match it - has been achieved and surpassed!

The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that has been dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years.

The Center is concerned that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints, which would affect hundreds of Long Island and New York students

who currently benefit from the programming.

With this fact in mind, The Kaylies, who are philanthropists committed to education and other causes that create a strong community, decided to offer this incentive; Mr. Kaylie was quite impressed with the work that the Gold Coast Arts Center has been doing over the last 20 years in the areas of arts and education.
