As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a
stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Pixie Day Camp
Recently, I’ve made changes in my life that reflect the person who I want to become. I’ve decided I’m going to transfer to the University of Miami. Villanova was great and all, but it really didn’t provide the college experience I so desperately crave. Hopefully, my decision is the right one, and Miami fulfills my expectations of what college should be like. I’ve also decided that it is important to have a strong resume. I’ve had a pretty wellpaying job on Fire Island for the past few summers, but I now realize that money isn’t everything. This summer, I left that job in search of a resumebuilding opportunity. Now, I’m a data analyst. I’m hoping that it looks more impressive on a resume than being a bus boy. It does not pay as much, but I know it will be the right
choice in the long run. I’ve also elected to take an online course this summer. It is actually a pretty big sacrifice. For four hours per day, I’ll be sitting in a classroom. It’s basically like being back at college. Regardless, I believe it is the right choice for me as well. Hopefully, these tough decisions that I’m making now will pay off in the future. I can only hope that I’m doing the right things for my career. As I move forward, I hope I do not forget these values. It is important to me that I always progress. I never want to be stagnant in life. As the opportunities come my way, I look forward to taking advantage of them. Additionally, I want to make myself happy. The next three years at the University of Miami promise to be great ones.

Bringing Out Generosity Sixth-graders at Islip Middle School and the school’s National Junior Honor Society jointly raised $2,202 by participating in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital annual Math-AThon fundraising program.
The students were asked to complete math problems in the program’s Funbooks, and seek donations from sponsors based on how many problems they solved. “We especially want to thank the members of the
Islip community,” said teacher Dianne Ungaro, who helped organize the middle schoolers’ participation. “Their generosity will help a young child in need.”

For the candle lighting portion of the event, NHS officers Gomez, Vice President Tia McDonald, Vice President Kristin Winter and Secretary Brenna Rodriguez spoke on the Honor Society’s essential qualities. Gomez led the new members in the Honor Society pledge before they were presented with certificates. “We are so proud of our National Honor Society inductees,” said Principal Michael Mosca. “They embody all of the qualities we, as educators, value in our students, and we look forward to their continued success here at Islip High School and beyond.”
Chairman of Breast Cancer Help, Inc. Henry Schreiber, Jr., presented Lorraine Pace Scholarships to three inspirational High School seniors whose lives have been touched by a breast cancer diagnosis. After supporting a family member through cancer, these students are determined to make a difference in the lives of others facing the disease. Babylon High School graduate Breanna Morrow received a $1,500 scholarship. Breanna will
attend Mercy College in the fall and will major in Sports Management and Marketing. Evan Sigouros graduated from West Islip High School with honors. The $1,500 scholarship recipient will attend Sacred Heart University as a member of the College of Health Professions. Islip High School graduate Tessa Seidenspinner received a $1,000 scholarship. She will attend the University of Vermont’s College of
Arts and Sciences in the fall. Breast Cancer Help, Inc. provides outreach, education and programs for those dealing with cancer at the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore. Through a series of free non-medical services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.
