Why so much dispute among nations grew?

We are all partially responsible for anything wrong, As to one single origin when it all began, we belong.

We are all minute particles in an immense tide; We can only assume that we know wrong from right.

Fifth-grade students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School completed research projects about South American or Central American countries for a special May 24th art show and country fair. The projects were presented on trifold boards that were shared with parents and the school community.

During the fair, student artwork was also displayed throughout the hallways,

showcasing the fifthgraders’ intensive study of artists and art movements throughout the year.

Projects featured included Seurat pointillism lighthouse landscape paintings, Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired clay flower bowls, Andy Warhol pop art printmaking and Wayne Thiebaud-inspired oil pastel cakes. The school’s third- and fourthgraders were also proud to display their multimedia

observational feather drawings, creative blue dog paintings and butterfly study drawings.

“Our students and families were able to enjoy all the artwork and creativity of the entire school as well as a slide show of fifth-grade students growing as artists through the years from first to fifth grade,” said art teacher Dana Belfiore.

participated in a series of guided nature walks at the local South Shore Nature Center.

Naturalists from the Seatuck Environmental Association introduced the children to the life

cycles of the local flora and fauna, and the students had a chance to encounter and observe tadpoles and turtles, a black racer snake, flying ospreys, and a mother deer.

Priceless Six Six standout career development students earned medals and gained priceless experiences as part of East Islip’s first-ever Special Olympics team this spring.

Earlier this year, East Islip Middle School physical education teachers Laura O’Donnell and Diane Wahrenburg became certified Special Olympics coaches.

They soon recruited a six-member team at the middle school, began training and entered East Islip’s first team into the Special Olympics Long Island Spring Games South, hosted by Bellport High School on May 22nd.

“The Special Olympics gives our athletes an opportunity to shine as individuals and be a part of a team,” said Wahrenburg.

The event kicked off on May 20th with a breakfast sponsored by the middle school’s Leaders Club, celebrating the student athletes. In attendance were the athletes and their families, the coaches, Leaders Club officers, Principal Mark Bernard, assistant principals Christian Seifert and Jason Stanton, Director of Special Education Lisa Belz and Susan Kosser, the assistant to the superintendent for student support services.

At the competition, the six athletes competed in two events each, and each athlete earned two medals. Anthony Gallino went home with two gold medals for the 50-meter race and the softball throw, Ryan Guerra took silver in both the 100-meter walk and softball throw, Krish

Kajuria walked his way to gold in the 100-meter race walk and placed fourth in the softball throw, Emily Maccarone came home with gold medals in the softball and mini javelin throw, Sarah Spruyt took bronze medals in both the 50-meter race and the softball throw, and Christopher Urraro took the silver in the 50-meter race and gold in the softball throw.

“It was an incredible experience,” said O’Donnell.

“Training for the events, getting to know the students on a more personal level, and being there with them and their families to celebrate their achievements at the Special Olympics was a very rewarding experience. I am looking forward to next year and expanding the program in the years to come.”

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

For the first time, ASPA, a national organization of high school newspaper competitions based in College Point, New York, also named The Broadcaster one of the 18 “Most Outstanding High

School Newspapers” in the nation.

On May 23rd, the newspaper continued its winning streak by amassing a remarkable 37 awards – a new school record – at the annual Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards, hosted by Hofstra University. East Islip’s students won 11 first place, 11 second place, 13 third place and two honorable mention awards in the categories of writing, layout, design and cartooning, succeeding in a pool of 2,000 entries submitted

by students from high schools all across Long Island.

“These students work so hard at what they do,” said journalism and English teacher Joan Dlouhy, co-adviser for The Broadcaster along with James Connell.

“They always work as a team, help each in offering feedback on their articles, respect one another’s work and offer assistance when needed.

They are truly the voices of East Islip High School BANNER YEAR - The 2016 staff of East Islip High School’s official student newspaper, and deserve every one of The Broadcaster, won their fourth consecutive first place award for excellence from the these awards.”
