The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. May Students Of The Month The East Islip Chamber of Commerce honored six impressive pupils – Connetquot Elementary School first graders Zoey Hart and Luke Rochford

and East Islip High School seniors Aidan Furey, Timothy Meier, Maggie Ruland and Krista Zinkiewicz – as May Students of the Month.

Detective’s Legacy Honored

The students were selected for their outstanding community service and participation in school activities.

The 5th Ave. bridge over the Southern State Parkway was renamed the Detective John E. Thomas Sr. Memorial Bridge in honor of the late detective. The Bay Shore native, who previously served in the United States Navy during WWII, began his career in law enforcement in the Brightwaters Police Department, and was the first African American policeman in the Suffolk County Police Department.

Among Det. Thomas’ many accolades, was his heroism for rescuing two young children from a burning house where 5 people perished. He was subsequently named Policeman of the Year and was promoted to Detective. Det. Thomas worked in the Community Relations Bureau in the Bay Shore community. Following his retirement from the police department, John E.

Thomas, Sr. became the Director of Security, of the Bay Shore School District for more than a decade. “The legacy of Det. John E. Thomas Sr. will live on for generations to come through this bridge renaming,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “He was a pioneer, a family man and a pillar of the Bay Shore community,” she concluded.
