For the second year in a row, East Islip High School students and aspiring filmmakers Brendan Bullard and Brian Potter have followed a Best In Show victory at the Long Island Media Arts Show with a selection by the Suffolk County Film Commission for the eighth annual Suffolk County First Exposure Film Festival. Their prequel film, “Slap Stick Figures 2,” was screened at the prestigious Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington on May 19th along with the other best new short films from Long Island’s most promising high school filmmakers. Curated by professional filmmakers from the Suffolk County Film Commission, the festival was an hour-long

exhibition of the “best of the best” high school short narrative, documentary and animated films pulled from the Long Island Media Arts Show at Five Towns College in Dix Hills. East Islip High School will be the site of an emergency preparedness drill on Saturday, June 22nd, held in conjunction with Exchange Ambulance of the Islips and the Suffolk County Police Department. Multiple local and neighboring fire departments and emergency medical services will also participate in the drill. The school and these first responders are collaborating in a proactive way to ensure they are prepared and could respond effectively in the event of an actual emergency situation. The drill will commence at 10 a.m. and run until approximately 2 p.m. No road blockages are expected at the school, which is located at 1 Redmen St. in Islip Terrace, and the East Islip School District cautions community members not to be alarmed.

Chances are, if you are smart, you will do well on the SATs. Chances are, if you do well on the SATs, you will go on to a good college. Chances are, if you go to a good college, you will find a good job. Chances are, if you find a good job, you will be successful. These generalizations are very good indicators of future prosperity; however, there are many people who are successful who didn’t excel in school. For instance, take a look at Bill Gates, the world’s wealthiest man. This billionaire did not finish college, yet he is undeniably successful. His exceptional story is,

for some, the hope for success and the hope for lifelong happiness. The numbers and certificates associated with schooling do not buy contentment nor success; they are merely one method of attaining it. Plenty of people with near-perfect SAT scores and degrees from the world’s most prestigious universities hate their lives. A high GPA and a fancy college sweatshirt do not guarantee happiness or success. It is all about hard work. A wise man once told me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What this means is that the more effort, the more blood,

sweat and tears you put into everything that you do, the more life will pay off. There is no promise of money once you graduate. The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.

Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

Junior Volunteers Recognized

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $1,500 scholarships to three exemplary junior volunteers. The 2013 honorees - Magnolia Chiri, Charles DiGiovanna and Haley Jordan - plan to pursue careers that will benefit health care. Their goals are to use their experience as volunteers in continuing their education in fields that will benefit the safety and well-being of others. Vice President of Human Resources Mark Boehrer commended this year’s recipients for their exemplary academic achievements and work ethic. “We look forward to these three individuals completing their studies and entering the workforce, hopefully back at Good Samaritan, where they can help continue the mission of excellence in care and commitment to others,” said Mr. Boehrer. Magnolia Chiri, a senior at Deer Park High School, has contributed more than 300 hours since 2010 with the hospital’s Transport Service and plans to continue volunteering as a college student at Hofstra University. “Being a Good Sam volunteer gave me a sense of accomplishment and was a great

way to help my community and better myself,” said Ms. Chiri. In addition to volunteering at Good Samaritan, she continued to challenge herself academically by taking Honors and AP classes while maintaining an A average. She has always made learning a priority and has set goals for her future with plans to pursue a career in medicine. Charles DiGiovanna, a graduate of North Babylon High School, volunteered for the hospital’s Gift Shop and Transport Service. Even with his demanding school schedule he was involved in experimental research. He will be attending Binghamton University to study electrical and computer engineering. Volunteering changed my career path. I had wanted to be a doctor but through my experience at Good Sam, I became intrigued by the technology doctors use to assist in their diagnoses. I wanted to help people not just by caring for them, but by developing advancements in their care,” said DiGiovanna. An Islip High School senior, Haley Jordan, has excelled in both her charitable service work and in her academics maintaining a 95 GPA. Since the eighth grade, she has worked as a junior volunteer at Good Samaritan and volunteered at her local church. Community service has been at the forefront through her work with the Girl Scouts of America, where she is currently pursuing her Gold Award, the most prestigious honor bestowed in the organization. Her own personal experience supporting a family member through their battle with cancer has inspired her to pursue a degree in Biology with specialization in Genetics. “I value the hands-on experience given to me at Good Sam leading me to my career choice to pursue medicine,” said Jordan. Junior volunteers at Good Samaritan have the opportunity to enhance their personal development and learn skills while assisting the hospital in providing its important services to the community. Scholarship funds are provided by the Central Council of the Guilds of Good Samaritan and through donations received at Good Samaritan’s Guild Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and Captree Café. The medical center has more than 450 active junior volunteers, who collectively contributed more than 5,000 hours in 2012. Between the ages of 15 and 18, they come from 17 different school districts in the vicinity of Good Samaritan Hospital. The program enables high school students to meet their community service requirements, as they participate in hospital events and assist in various departments throughout the facility.

The young musicians of Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip delivered an impressive set of performances at their spring concert on May 16th, kicking off with the Timber Point Orchestra. Directed by Jaime DeMaria, accompanied by pianist Rachel Axelrod and led by concertmaster and All-County violinist and USDAN scholarship winner Sophia Bates, the ensemble wowed the audience on Rob Grice’s “Defender of Time,” Stephen Foster’s elegiac “Off to the Races” and “March of the Bowmen” by John Caponegro. Up next was the school’s band, directed by Lynda Maniscalco. After the humorously powerful opener, “Tyrannosaurus Rocks” by John Edmondson, the band musicians were joined by nine members of the school’s chorus – Bates, Alyssa Carey, Alex Cutrone, Thomas Locke, Jenna Maio, Kayleigh Marquart, Emma Mendolia, Noelle Naccarato and Amanda Schulte – for a special rendition of “The Candy Man,” the sweet favorite composed by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the

After visiting the middle school, Williamson joined Costello and outgoing Board of Education President Ken Cronin for an Islip Rotary Club meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip, where Williamson spoke to Rotary members, led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and received thanks for his service to his country. The Islip Rotary has been a longtime funding contributor for East Islip’s military support programs. Williamson’s day ended at East Islip High School with a surprise visit to the classes that had contributed to his support.

Full-time U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Patrick Williamson, who serves in the Air Force’s 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton Beach, spent May 9th visiting with the East Islip community. A 2006 graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School, Staff Sgt. Williamson enlisted in February 2008 and went through boot camp the following month at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. In 2012 he was deployed to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan to support the mission of personnel recovery and combat search and rescue, where he was a beneficiary of East Islip’s donation programs for overseas troops. At the 106th Rescue Wing, an Air National Guard Rescue Unit, he works as a material management specialist. Williamson is also a volunteer firefighter at the North Patchogue Fire Department. During the morning of May 9th, the staff sergeant made presentations to various classrooms at East Islip Middle School, telling students about life in the
