Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in both the United States and Canada and also in the United Kingdom. While Father’s Day might trace its origins to the United States, the holiday is celebrated across the globe, including in Argentina, Greece, India, Singapore, and New Zealand. Fathers often receive gifts from their spouses and children on Father’s Day. What to give the dad who seemingly has it all leaves many people scratching their heads in the weeks preceding Father’s Day. People who find themselves in such situations can think outside the box and look for ways to honor their fathers this year. The following are some unique ways to honor Dad this Father’s Day. Travel Dad may be pleasantly surprised by a stroll down Memory Lane. Plan a day trip or weekend excursion to Dad’s hometown, visiting all his old haunts, including the house he grew up in, and allow him to serve as tour guide. This can be a great way for Dad to share stories and for his family to learn a

little more about the old man. Other great places to visit include Dad’s college campus or his ancestral homeland. Highlight Reel In the months preceding Father’s Day, do some covert digging through family photo albums to create a “This Is Your Life” highlight reel for Dad. Go back as far as possible, even looking through Dad’s baby photos if you can find them. This might require a collaborative effort, requiring the whole family to work together, but that can make for an enjoyable way for families to spend time together and see how Dad became the man he is today. Present the finished product at a family dinner on Father’s Day. Make A List Another unique way to honor Dad is to compile a list of the many ways you are and will always be grateful for having him as a father. Adults honoring their fathers can cite specific examples they recall from childhood and young adulthood when Dad went above and beyond or served as a sounding board or shoulder to cry on. This is a great way to honor Dad and let him know all those sacrifices and special moments are still appreciated and will never be forgotten. Father’s Day is a chance to honor Dad, and the way you choose to do so can be as unique as the man himself.

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2022 As the approaching 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy reminds us of the effects weather can have on the electric system, PSEG Long Island is announcing that it is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing electric infrastructure and storm hardening improvements help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. “We are committed to providing reliable electric service every day, regardless of the conditions,” said Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island. “The improvements we have made over the past eight years will help us deliver consistent, resilient power to our customers, today and in the future.” Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as

by performing circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s infrastructure improvements for summer 2022 include: · New or upgraded transformers installed in Round Swamp, Navy Road, Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Brightwaters substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand · 12 new distribution feeder lines installed in Ocean Beach, Far Rockaway, Round Swamp, Ronkonkoma, Brightwaters and Southampton areas to accommodate load growth · 4 kilovolt (kV) feeder converted to a 13.8 kV feeder line in Montauk area to provide additional feeder capacity · Overhead line replacement in Eastport to supply new load addition · New Round Swamp Road substation constructed with two new 69 kV transmission lines installed from Ruland Road and Plainview substations to serve new load additions in the area · Robert Moses to Captree 23 kV transmission cable replacement to improve reliability on Fire Island · MTA Beach 67th Street 33 kV transmission circuit relocation to support MTA station upgrades in Far Rockaway Storm Hardening Programs Completed

PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system. Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, will be holding a Job Fair at the Farm to fill a variety of full and part-time positions. Eastern Suffolk BOCES collaborates with Pal-OMine to provide students with alternative approaches for educational success. These organization’s use a comprehensive team approach and are seeking individuals for paid positions who have educational, mental health, speech and occupational therapy backgrounds, as well as those with Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, and State or

County Court experience. Volunteers, including retired first responders and veterans, are also sought. The Job Fair will take place at the organization’s farm in Islandia on Friday, June 17th, Friday, July 8th and Friday, August 12th with time slots for appointments from 10:00 am-11:30 am, 11:30 am-1 pm. East Islip HS Earns Record Numbers Of Teeny Awards Nominations

The Islip Arts Council introduced the tradition of the Teeny Awards 14 years ago as a way to publicly recognize the very talented theater students in high schools across the Town of Islip. The Teeny Awards are modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, recognizing students in the categories of Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, Featured Actor/Actress and Best Ensemble, for both musicals and nonmusical plays. Special Recognition Awards are also given to students involved in crew, pit orchestra and poster artwork, and every director is given the opportunity to recognize a special student from each production for the “Director’s Choice” Award. A panel of judges attends each local high school production and evaluates the actors’ performances based on a rubric, and a Teeny Awards gala complete with red carpet and TV crew is held in early June. For the past 13 years, East Islip High School has submitted its musical productions for Teeny judging, and their Drama Club productions for the past four years, thanks to the new initiative of the school’s Drama Club to perform full-scale nonmusical productions each fall. In the past, the Drama Club performed smaller-scale, one-act

plays, which are not permitted to be submitted for Teeny judging. This year, East Islip High School’s students and theatrical directors were thrilled to receive a record number of nominations for their two full-scale productions of “A Christmas Carol” (December 2021) and “The Sound of Music” (March 2022.) Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower

who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church. Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which

was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers — celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.

The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce its 2022 Summer Concert Series. Live music returns to the following venues as follows: Glen Cove (Morgan Park) - Sunday, July 3, 7:30 p.m. Huntington (Heckscher Park) - Sunday, July 10, 8:00 p.m. Mineola (Memorial Park - Wednesday, July 13, 8:00 p.m. East Meadow (Lakeside Theater/Eisenhower Park) - Friday, July 15, 8:00 p.m. Malverne (Malverne Station Park) - Sunday, July 17, 3:00 p.m. Join Music Director & Conductor Louis Panacciulli, and the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra as they bring you the music of Rodgers

and Hammerstein, George Gershwin, Leroy Anderson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Duke Ellington, and others. Local favorites, vocalists Jack and Ann Cassin, will also join the orchestra. The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra is grateful for the sponsorship of Jovia Financial Credit Union and the Huntington Arts Council. The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1984 by Managing Director Dawn Manuel and Music Director Louis Panacciulli. The orchestra performs a full summer concert series in many of the parks in Nassau County featuring classical overtures, Broadway medleys and marches. Based in the Village of Mineola, the orchestra has

been featured with many prestigious entertainers and maintains affiliations with Nassau Community College and the Mineola Choral Society with seasonal performances at Chaminade High School. The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra has been a member of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce since 1996.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island. Little Flower’s mission is to improve the well-being of those they serve, which they do through rigorous medical and mental health programs and services. They believe that the devastating effects of trauma, poverty, racism, substance abuse, violence and lack of opportunity – particularly on children and families – can be healed with the proven use of effective therapy and support services. They provide care through a “What’s happened to you?” lens as opposed to “What is wrong with you?” lens. Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the speciﬁc needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic ﬁelds and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts

program or music and art therapy. Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus. Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community.
