be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

What Is Crew?

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the 8 identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged

in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger

boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

The event, which was held at Ross Memorial Park in Brentwood, was open to all and free of charge. JFK’s chorus was up next, under the direction of conductor James Santoro and featuring small group singers Fiona Ashe, Kayla Cappe, Madison Latronica and Kaitlyn Rice. After two Teresa Jennings adaptations, “Yankee Doodle’s Pony” and “I Can’t Stand Still Under These Raindrops,” the chorus tackled Mentor Williams’ “Drift Away” before concluding with an enthusiastic run through Neil Diamond’s classic sing-along “Sweet Caroline.” “The JFK chorus students had a wonderful time singing, moving and performing at the spring concert,” said Santoro. “The audience also had a great time singing along to a couple of their favorite songs. My thanks to the parents and children for a great year.” Directed by Ronald Fox, the school’s band ended the concert with four rousing numbers: Robert W. Smith’s “Apollo

Continuing the East Islip School District’s 2013 spring concert series, the student-musicians of John F. Kennedy Elementary School in East Islip delivered a night of stellar performances at the school’s May 8th concert. “The JFK community was treated to a wonderful evening of music and song,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “It is amazing to watch fourth- and fifthgraders perform with such grace.” A special ceremony preceded the musical portion of the concert, honoring two longtime JFK teachers. Fourthgrade teacher Robert Machida, who recently marked his 45th year at the school, and fifth-grade teacher Anne Conte will both retire at the end of the year, and O’Rourke and other school staff members paid tribute to their remarkable careers. The concert kicked off with the school’s orchestra program, directed by Angela Fetcho. Accompanied by pianist Jaime DeMaria, the young string players launched into traditional piece “Cripple Creek,” followed by Stephen Foster’s “Off to the Races” and Rob Grice’s “Dragon Slayer.” “I am extremely proud of my JFK orchestra musicians,” said Fetcho.

East Islip High School student Nicole Caico, acclaimed for her cartoons and photography, was recently accepted to the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists at Stony Brook University. The junior will hone her skills at news reporting, writing and editing during the weeklong residential summer workshop while working in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom and absorbing classes covering everything from broadcasting and website construction to blogging and photojournalism. She is considering the latter as a potential future career. Caico is one of only 18 students on Long Island accepted to this prestigious program, which takes place in July. According to Joan Dlouhy, the adviser to the school newspaper, Caico is only the fourth student in East Islip history to attend the Green Summer Institute. The program is named for the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and editor whose dream was to start a “boot camp” for high school journalists at Stony Brook University.

Fashion Show Students in Emily Gerde’s seventh-grade Italian and Spanish classes at East Islip Middle School walked down a “red carpet” in the decorated Professional Development Center on May 8th. The fashion show was part of the classes’ clothing unit, in which students worked in pairs for two class periods answering questions in the target language. Their assignment was to determine the exact outfits and accessories they would be wearing for the fashion

show. Included in each description was the color, where the clothing was originally purchased, the season it would be worn and the approximate cost. The stylish seventh-graders took turns modeling their outfits and speaking at the podium describing their partner’s garments. “It was a great way to tie in some math skills, the store names, the clothing and the colors,” explained Gerde.

For the past 12 years, second-graders in Patti Austin’s class at the Commack Road Elementary School in Islip have corresponded through the use of the written word with Rosemary Ulrich’s secondgrade class from Arrowhead Elementary School in

reading. “The kids really love it,” said Mrs. Ulrich. “When the first letters come in, the kids are always excited to find out what they have in common with their pen pals.” Added Mrs. Austin, “I think it is great for the kids to understand the joy of receiving a handwritten letter. Everything now is instant, and the anticipation of what they’re going to read and learn about their pen pals is exciting.” To culminate the yearlong pen pal program, the Arrowhead students traveled to CRES to enjoy the day with their new friends. During the visit, the students enjoyed a picnic, played on the playground, participated in a buddy read and taught one another math strategy games. For Mrs. Austin’s class, this was the first of their pen pal visits, as they also participated in a yearlong pen pal program with the second-graders in Mary Bauernfeind’s class at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School in Islip.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
