New York Adopts Legislation To Fight Organized Shop Thefts; Protect Workers

Senator Martinez Celebrates New Laws To Lockdown

New York has enacted sweeping legislation that protects retail workers and businesses from the consequences of organized retail theft. These changes were advocated by Governor Kathy Hochul and supported by State Senator Monica R. Martinez. The package of protections included in the recently adopted FY25 State Budget:

• enhance penalties for assaults on retail workers, upgrading the offense from a misdemeanor to a felony. Under the new law, individuals inflicting physical harm on retail workers during the course of their duties will face felony charges.

• enable prosecutors to consolidate the value of stolen goods when pursuing larceny charges, allowing for the aggregation of retail items from various stores. This provision aims to establish a higher larceny threshold for crimes committed under the same criminal scheme.

• criminalize the facilitation of the sale of stolen goods by thirdparty sellers, holding individuals accountable if they utilize any online platform or physical venue to sell stolen merchandise.

Mt. Laurel

• $40.2 million for specialized Retail Theft Teams within State Police, District Attorneys’ offices, and local law enforcement, with an additional 100 New York State Police personnel assigned specifically to combat organized retail theft.

• a $5 million tax credit to assist small businesses in enhancing security measures, such as installing cameras. Additionally, the Budget establishes a $3,000 tax credit for small businesses that meet the spending threshold on retail theft prevention measures, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on these businesses.

“From economic losses for businesses to higher costs paid by consumers, organized retail theft is robbing all New Yorkers,” said Senator Martinez. “Through these comprehensive measures, we not only send a clear message that such criminal activity will not be tolerated, but also protect the safety and livelihoods of our retail workers and businesses.”

East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team Celebrates Success

The East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team was recently celebrated for their remarkable season at the May Town Board Meeting by Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board.

In 2022, the Chiefs Hockey Team made club history by clinching Gold at the prestigious CAN/AM Championship in Lake Placid. Last year, they continued to make waves by securing a spot in the 2023 Chipotle-USA Hockey High School National Championships.

This year, the team’s winning streak reached new heights with several historic victories. They claimed their first-ever New York State Amateur Hockey Association (NYSAHA) State Championship, a monumental achievement for the program. Their success carried over to the USA Hockey National Championship in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where they finished with an impressive record, earning them the #2 rank in the Nation for Division II.

“Through hard work, resilience, and exceptional talent, the East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team’s achievements this season are nothing short of extraordinary, bringing immense pride to our community.

On behalf of myself and the Town Board, congratulations to all the players, coaches, and staff for their outstanding performance,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

The Value Of Activity-Driven Fundraisers

Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations.

Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective. What are activity-driven fundraisers?

Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser

that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors.

Are activity-driven fundraisers effective?

The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activitydriven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

Special Olympics Athletes Bring Home 20 Medals

East Islip’s Special Olympics team – featuring 11 dedicated athletes from East Islip High School, East Islip Middle School, Cleary School for the Deaf and alumni – successfully competed in the Special Olympics New York Spring Games North, hosted by Plainedge High School.

The festivities began a day earlier with the annual kickoff breakfast at the high school, attended by the athletes, coaches, family members, SEPTO and East Islip administration. High school volunteers proved invaluable in setting up and helping throughout

the breakfast.

Family and fans in the stands cheered on East Islip’s athletes at the Games as they competed in a variety of track events including the 25-meter assisted walk, 50-meter motorized wheelchair slalom, 50-meter run, 100-meter walk, 200-meter run and 400-meter run, and field events such as tennis and softball throw, Turbojav throw and shot put. East Islip brought home 10 gold medals, eight silver medals, two bronze medals and two fourth-place ribbons.

“We lucked out with a

beautiful day for the event,” said Diane Wahrenburg, who coaches East Islip with Julie Susskind. “Our team showed outstanding sportsmanship and perseverance, and put forth an amazing effort throughout the training season and during the competition. Their smiles in the pictures are worth a thousand words. We, and all of our additional coaches, volunteers, family members and administrators, are extremely proud of all of these athletes. Can’t wait until next year!”

Summer is a season synonymous with relaxation. Sitting poolside or relaxing on a patio with a cold beverage is a great way to escape the daily grind and make the most of a warm evening, and the following recipe for “Summer Cantaloupe” from Andrew Schloss’ “Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits” (Storey Publishing) is tailor-made for summer nights.

Summer Cantaloupe

Makes about 1 quart

1 fifth (31/4 cups) 80-100 proof vodka

4 cups cantaloupe chunks

1 cup Simple Syrup (see below)

Finely grated zest of 2 lemons

Directions:

1. Muddle the vodka, cantaloupe and lemon zest with a wooden spoon in a half-gallon jar. Stir to moisten everything.

2. Seal the jar and put it in a cool, dark cabinet until the liquid smells and tastes strongly of melon, four to seven days.

3. Strain the mixture with a mesh strainer into a clean quart jar. Do not push on the solids to extract more liquid.

4. Stir in the Simple Syrup.

5. Seal and store in a cool, dark cabinet. Use within one year.

Simple Syrup

Makes 3 cups

2 1/4 cups water

21/4 cups granulated cane sugar

Directions:

Mix the water and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar is all moistened. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir to make sure the sugar is completely dissolved, then remove from the heat and let cool. Refrigerate for up to three months.

Shrimp Dish Tailor-Made

For Warm Evenings

Lighter fare is more popular when the weather warms up, as many people don’t want to feel weighed down by their diet. Fish is a popular summertime meal for many reasons, not the least of which is that fish tends to be light but still flavorful. In addition, many meals featuring fish can be whipped up rather quickly. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Grilled Garlic Shrimp With a Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce” from Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey Publishing). Fresh and simple, this meal can be enjoyed as a change of pace at summer barbecues or simply as a light weeknight meal with the family.

Grilled Garlic Shrimp With A Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce

Serves 6w

For the marinated shrimp

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

2 garlic cloves, minced

36 large shrimp, peeled and deveined

12 6-inch wooden skewers

For the tomato sauce

3 pounds assorted large heirloom tomatoes

1 small sweet onion, minced

1 garlic clove, minced

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon honey, preferably sourwood honey

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips (chiffonade is the formal name for this cut), plus more for garnish

Sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

1. To marinate the shrimp, combine the olive oil, red wine vinegar and garlic in a large bowl. Stir to combine. Add the shrimp and allow to sit, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.

2. Prepare a medium fire in a charcoal or gas grill. Soak the skewers in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent them from burning.

3. To make the tomato sauce, bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Place one or two tomatoes at a time into the boiling water. Watch them and, as you see the skin split, remove with a slotted spoon and place in a bowl of cool water. At this point, it will be very easy to slip off the skins.

4. Cut the peeled tomatoes into a small dice. Put the cut tomatoes into a large bowl. Add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey. Stir gently to combine.

5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 per skewer. Grill the skewered shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until they are pink. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and a couple grinds of fresh pepper.

6. Just before serving, add the basil leaves to the tomato sauce. Taste and add more salt if necessary.

7. Ladle the tomato sauce onto a serving platter and arrange the skewers on top of the sauce. Garnish with more basil leaves and enjoy!

Gift Ideas For Graduates

The class of 2024 soon will be donning their caps and gowns and receiving their diplomas. After commencement ceremonies, graduation parties will soon follow.

For party guests, that means finding the right gifts for grads. Some high school graduates will continue their studies at colleges and universities. Others may pursue careers in various trades.

Still, some graduates may be ready to enter the workforce right away. No matter the direction, these gifts can treat graduates to something special.

Streaming TV device

While it's certainly possible to watch favorite shows or films on mobile devices, viewing is that much clearer on televisions. Rather than graduates having to invest in cable television wherever they go, streaming devices like AppleTV or Roku are portable, which means they can be used at home, in a dorm room or on vacation.

Secured credit card

Individuals typically are eligible to apply for credit cards once they reach age 18, which is the age most students are when they graduate high school. Credit cards are one method of establishing solid credit, so it can be beneficial for a teen to have one. But it can be challenging for individuals with no credit histories to get approval. A secured card, according to CapitalOne, is a credit card that requires money

deposited with the credit card issuer in order to open the account. This security deposit is held by the issuer as long as the account is open. Often the security deposit is the same as the credit limit. Gift-givers can help establish secured cards for grads by providing the funds for the security deposits.

Framed memorabilia

Whether a graduate was a star athlete or a premier member of the marching band, gift-givers can provide special memories of time spent in school. Frame ticket stubs, sports jerseys, show programs, or other memorabilia that commemorates a graduate's glory days at their alma mater.

Travel accessories

Graduates may want to go on a trip before they take the next step in their lives. Quality travel gear is a worthy investment. Select luggage that won’t

exceed airport carry-on limits so grads can cut the baggage check lines when they dart away to locales near or far. Carryon bags also fit easily in bus cargo areas or in the trunks of cars. Pair the gifts with standard or digital luggage tags.

Wireless earbuds or headphones

Upgrade grads’ audio with the newest wireless earbuds or headphones. This way they can take them to the gym or use them to listen to shows or music while sharing spaces with others, including college roommates.

Smartphone wallet case

Teenagers are seldom without their phones. A smartphone wallet case enables graduates to stash IDs, credit or debit cards and some cash into specially designed pockets built into the phone cases. This keeps all essentials in one spot.

Memorable Ways To Celebrate Dad This Father’s Day

Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. The days when dads would receive a colorful necktie for Father’s Day are largely (and, for fathers,

thankfully) a relic of the past. Modern Father’s Day celebrations tend to involve more careful planning, and the following are some ways to make this year’s day for dads one to remember.

• Take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last decade-plus, as various firms have made it easier than ever for individuals

to trace their family histories. If Dad counts himself among the millions across the globe interested in their family histories, moms and kids can work together to create a virtual tour through that history. Present the history as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting things you learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up.

• Take to the great outdoors. Father’s Day is celebrated in midJune, making the day a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors (weather permitting). Plan a day

around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an avid fisherman, book a family outing on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and not navigating. If Dad loves being in natural settings, camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the crisp morning air. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, take him out to the ballgame so he can soak up some Father’s Day sun.

• Book a private chef. If Dad has a fascination with food, perhaps nothing can make Father’s Day more memorable than a delicious meal served by a private chef. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by

someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning. Identify Dad’s favorite dish and then look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine.

• Appeal to Dad’s inner adventurer. Some Dads may just want to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, book a fun and adventurous activity the whole family can enjoy together. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend can connect Dad with his inner adventurer.

There’s no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad won’t soon forget.

Empire State Development Announces Completion Of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 Million Expansion On Long Island

Empire State Development (ESD) recently announced the completion of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 million facility expansion in Islandia. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization that utilizes therapeutic equine programs to promote growth, learning, and healing for children and adults with disabilities. Supported by a $600,000 capital grant from Empire State Development, recommended by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council, the expansion will boost its capacity for job training, workforce preparedness, and internship programs. These services will provide crucial skills and support that empowers these individuals to overcome employment barriers and achieve greater

independence and success in their lives.

Empire State Development President CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “Pal-OMine’s expansion is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it’s a catalyst for change that empowers our most vulnerable citizens to lead fulfilling lives and contribute to a more inclusive economy. By investing in innovative programs that deliver essential vocational training and support services, we are unlocking the potential of these individuals and fortifying the social and economic fabric of our society.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Founder & CEO Lisa Gatti said, “We are immensely grateful to Empire State Development and the

Long Island Economic Development Council for supporting our work. The ESD grant allows Pal-OMine the space to continue to empower, educate and enrich the most underserved communities and most importantly provide experiences to those individuals who desire to learn viable job skills. Working with our horses instills a newfound sense of confidence and self-worth, which serves as a foundation for their personal and professional growth journey.”

Since its inception in 1995, Pal-O-Mine has been at the forefront of using horses to facilitate growth, learning, and healing, serving over 400 individuals weekly. The programs offer personalized support and training to

high-risk youth and adults with disabilities, aiming to increase participants’ independence, community integration, and economic security. The expansion has transformed the facility, creating nearly 5,000 square feet of enhanced space to better serve its participants. The project involved the renovation of two existing structures to ensure ADA compliance, accessibility, and safety for all individuals. Additionally, a new 2,000-square-foot prefabricated building has been constructed, providing much-needed space for expanded programming and services.

The acquisition of new equipment has enhanced the center’s capacity to deliver equine-assisted therapy services, workforce training, and internship

programs. By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on the farm, participants develop a broad range of vocational and life skills. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, the Farm facilitates internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for program participants. The expansion and enhancement of these initiatives helps equip students with the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the workforce and beyond.

“Pal-O-Mine provides essential and therapeutic equine services to our residents who are in need, including our veterans. With Suffolk County being home to the largest veterans’ population in the state, we are grateful for the various initiatives the organization provides to our hometown heroes who are experiencing emotional or physical trauma. I applaud our partners for coming together to complete this expansion project, which will further empower our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.

“We are grateful to Empire State Development, and the Governor, for investing in the important work that Pal-O-Mine Equestrian does to benefit those with special needs, veterans, and others throughout our Islip community. Equine therapy offers tremendous mental health benefits, and we are so happy they will be able to expand this important program,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

The Differences Between Weather Warnings And Watches

Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

Outlook

This is the least serious weather alert. It usually means that hazardous

weather may approach in the next three to seven days. The public should monitor the situation and stay tuned for further updates.

Advisory

With an advisory, weather conditions are not overly serious but could prove inconvenient. Individuals should be cautious and prudent when preparing supplies

or traveling.

Watch

During a weather watch, there is an increased risk of a hazardous weather occurrence, though the timing or location is still uncertain. This is when it is essential to practice an evacuation or preparedness plan and stock up on any lastminute supplies.

Warning

The most serious of the weather impact notifications, a warning constitutes an imminent or likely event. The weather may cause a threat to property or life. Immediate action to stay safe is necessary. While these alerts are based on the severity of impending weather, it is important to note that the NWS will not necessarily

follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Summer is a great time to enjoy recreational activities that take advantage of the great outdoors. Vinyl siding is not something that many homeowners consider painting, but it can be done. However, some contractors may not recommend it as the best option to overhaul a home. Painting siding means it will only be as durable as the paint used. It’s also essential to determine if painting vinyl will void warranties. Wood or engineered wood or fiber cement siding tend to be better options than vinyl should you want to switch colors down the line. Vinyl siding can be painted if it is done right, and it can be an affordable way to change the look of a home without investing in new siding. According to Benjamin Moore Paints, vinyl siding that will be painted will need to be cleaned thoroughly, including the removal of any mildew, chalk or dirt, to enhance paint adhesion. Pitted or porous vinyl siding always must be primed, but others may not require priming. Choose an exterior paint designed for painting on vinyl. Two coats of paint are recommended. According to BobVila. com, paint for vinyl has acrylic and urethane resins that accommodate the expansion and contraction of vinyl and help the paint stick. Also, for the best results, the home improvement experts on the site advise painting when temperatures are mild and there is low relative humidity and an overcast sky.

Fun Ways To Celebrate The Summer Solstice

embrace these ideas for commemorating the start of summer.

• Watch the sunrise. Get up early and watch the sun come up on the longest day of the year. Then be sure to catch the sunset to enjoy every minute of daylight.

• Host a cookout. Memorial Day, Canada Day and Independence Day get most of the barbecue glory this time of year. But there’s nothing that says the first day of summer shouldn’t be a reason to gather friends and family for a cookout. June 20 falls on a Thursday this year, so the solstice provides the perfect excuse to take a four-day weekend and celebrate the official arrival of summer.

• Light a campfire. Traditional Mid-summer’s Eve/summer solstice celebrations featured bonfires. Hold on to the tradition by gathering people around a campfire or backyard firepit. S’mores make the perfect complement to a campfire

scene.

• Grab some ice cream. Cool off on the summer solstice by visiting a nearby ice cream shop and indulge in a sundae or triple-decker cone.

• Go on a nature hike. Enjoy the great outdoors with a relaxing hike through a park or nature trail.

• Participate in a beach clean-up. Make a beach trip even more enjoyable by signing up for a cleanup to clear the sand of litter. Organize an impromptu beach cleanup session either solo or with some like-minded friends.

• Pick fresh fruit. Many berries come into season in the summer. Head to

a nearby pick-your-own farm and grab fresh fruit to enjoy right away or utilize your pickings in recipes.

• Plant a flower garden. Clean up garden beds or go to the nursery and grab

some colorful annuals to spruce up areas around the yard.

The summer solstice is an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of summer and all the fun that comes with it.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people

per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a post-Covid reopening – a

reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for

on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/ donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team. For further information, contact Vito Colletti at 631-3589917 or vcolletti@optonline.net
