The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social
The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

Film Fest After winning “Best in Show” at the 2019 Long Island Media Arts Show at Five Towns College, East Islip High School student Stephanie Milito’s short film “Breathe” was selected for the 13th annual First Exposure Film Festival, held on May 19 at the Cinema Art Centre in Huntington. Milito’s film, which deals with acute anxiety disorder, was shown in the theater at the event, and she was presented with a certificate of recognition by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Dance Connection Honor Society Inductees Dance Connection is proud to introduce this year’s inductees into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts. The National Honor Society for Dance Arts™ (NHSDA) is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, cultural/community centers, performing arts organizations, and postsecondary education. Students applying for consideration must meet requirements for both dance and academic areas of study. The 2019 induction class included Allison
Bradley (East Islip), Jeanna Diaz (Bay Shore), and Elizabeth Ericson (East Islip) into the Junior Honor Society and Jillian Bradley, Taylor Cappozoli, Faith Henderson, Melissa Kinnear, and Lilly Scholl (all East Islip students) into the Senior Honor Society. The inductees and their guests were treated to guest speaker Emily Hart-Lopez, a professional performing artist, dancer, and dance/ fitness instructor based in New York City who spoke to them about the influence that dance had on her life, even beyond the studio and stage, as well as what it is like to pursue a career in the arts. Afterward, everyone enjoyed a reception in the studio to celebrate. “Honoring the dedication of students involved
in the arts is so very important. They are expected not only to work to excel in their academic life, but to show passion and dedication for their arts education as well and it is wonderful to be able to offer our students this recognition”, Mary Naftal, Artistic Director. LI Winners In PSA Contest A trio of Islip High School video production students – Chaiti Paul, Chrystle Stewart and Stephania Teran – were recently named Long Island regional winners in The Greatest Save Teen PSA Program’s video contest for
their entry “Abduction.” The program is sponsored by KinderVision, a charity of Major League Baseball. The students and their technology teacher Mike Reilly were invited to a New York Mets game, where they were recognized during
a pre-game ceremony in front of a crowd of 30,000. Their PSA entry will now move onto the national competition, giving them the opportunity to earn scholarship money and additional recognition.

East Islip High School’s varsity girls golf team, coached by Judith Fischer, competed in the Suffolk County competition on May 20-21 at Middle Island Country Club, finishing seventh overall. Two golfers, captain Sofia Ferrezza and Sophia Stryjewski, made the initial cut to return to compete on the second day as individuals for an All-State spot. In a field of 103 golfers, Stryjewski finished 13th, six strokes off the All-State mark; Ferrezza finished in 19th, 12 strokes off the cut.

THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?
While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. Islip Middle School seventh grader Jessica Cruz was recently announced as the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from Life is Music, Music is Life. The funds are set aside to support Cruz’s growth as a musician through private music instruction. Cruz plays trombone in the middle school’s seventh and eighth grade band and jazz band, as well as Islip High School’s marching band.
