Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system.

One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?”

The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us.

The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics?

Those are pretty hard to forget.

And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting.

I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.)

North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

A Return To Summer On The Shore

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed!

As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy.

It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach.

My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer.

Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by

Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy.

Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful.

As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed.

Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do

not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole.

As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years.

Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious.

Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife.

This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

Steinhardt is taking a leave of absence from his studies at American University to concentrate his full-time efforts into expanding and developing the Shootout for Soldiers. Among the initial benefits of this was adding the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund,

Semper Fi Fund and Gary Sinise Foundation into the partnership mix. The common mission of all four organizations is to provide financial, physical and emotional support or services to individuals that have dedicated their lives to the United States military.

“We are extremely proud that, with an allvolunteer team, Shootout for Soldiers has spent less than one percent of the total fundraising dollars on expenses to organize and produce the games,” Steinhardt explained.

Both the Baltimore event, to be held at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland and the Long Island event, scheduled for the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York, start at 9 am and end 24 hours later. While the game is just for fun, the score is kept continuously throughout the event

between the two teams, Stars and Stripes, and in 2013, Stars won 349-336.

“Our service members sacrifice so much for our country, and my team and I are honored to be able to give back in some way,” Steinhardt said.

“We’re incredibly grateful for all of the support, and we’re excited to continue to expand and develop the Shootout for Soldiers.”

Fire Island Dance Festival choreographers and host will be announced this spring. Past festivals have welcomed dancers from the country’s top modern and ballet companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, New York City Ballet, Pilobolus and MOMIX, and featured iconic choreography by Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Lar Lubovitch and Tony Award winners Rob Ashford and Jerry Mitchell. Celebrity hosts have included Alan Cumming, Ana Gasteyer, Whoopi Goldberg, Bebe Neuwirth, Phylicia Rashad, Caroline Rhea, Mo Rocca and Bruce Vilanch.

“It’s humbling to think about the growth we’ve had over the past 20 years thanks to the support of the Fire Island Pines

community, our generous donors and sponsors, the talented dancers and choreographers and our tireless volunteers,” said Denise Roberts Hurlin, founding director of Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. “Although the face of HIV/AIDS has changed in the last two decades, the fight is far from over. This summer we’ll celebrate our collective achievements knowing that our expanded mission has allowed us to grow, while ensuring that those we originally set out to help, those living with HIV/ AIDS, continue to receive the lifesaving assistance they need.”

Through their generous support, Fire Island Dance Festival attendees have helped ensure that the most vulnerable among

us receive lifesaving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance.

The 20th anniversary celebration kicks off with the Friday night Leadership Event, an intimate evening reserved for Leadership Supporters.

The excitement continues throughout the weekend with three Fire Island Dance Festival performances: the opening performance on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. (open bar starting at 4 p.m.); sunset performance on Saturday, July 19th at 7 p.m. (open bar following); and closing performance on Sunday, July 20th at 5 p.m. (open bar following).

Each performance features acclaimed and emerging dancers and dance companies.

Leadership Supporters enjoy an elevated festival experience including the Leadership Event with cocktails on Friday, highly coveted tickets to the sunset performance on Saturday or priority seating at either 5 p.m. performance and prominent recognition in the harbor and throughout the Pines.

Beginning May 24th, tickets also will be available in person on weekends in the Fire Island Pines Harbor.

John F. Kennedy Elementary didn’t let the weather ruin its annual celebration of Earth Day, held this year on May 22nd.

Due to rainy conditions, the school’s traditional outdoor walk had to be canceled. Undaunted, JFK’s

students, with banners in hand, marched through the halls and joined their classmates for a celebration in the gymnasium, where they performed Earth Day songs, read poems and shared information on how to save the Earth.

Educational Experience

On May 7th, a U.S. Army truck from Kentucky arrived at East Islip High School on a special mission to showcase what the Army does and how it trains its servicemen and servicewomen.

Students from the school’s technology, business and social studies classes were invited to enter the custom-built

Army trailer and test all of the simulated equipment on board. Completing the educational experience, the students were permitted to ask questions and learn how the service personnel use each piece of equipment on the vehicle.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for these students to get a firsthand look at how advanced our

military capability has become over the years, and to meet some of the military officials who are out there every day protecting our country and thank them for their service,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

Best Ever Earth Day

East Islip High School’s sixth annual Earth Day celebration on April 11th, hosted by the school’s Environment Green Career Academy, featured dozens of environmental exhibitions promoting new and green technology, more than 35 participating businesses and organizations, and visits from Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Islip Town Councilmen Steven J. Flotteron and Tom Cochrane.

from William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach attended and showcased their energy-saving “UFO Phantom Load” project.

“Our students and the William Floyd students had a wonderful opportunity to talk all day, share experiences and lunch, and learn from one another,” said the event’s organizer, Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer.

Seventh-grade technology students from East Islip Middle School presented an environmental display,

and the Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank organization manned a booth collecting canned food items to donate to Long Islanders in need. The constant presence of the event’s traditional mascot frogs kept attendees amused.

“Everyone said the same thing afterward – it was the best Earth Day event they had ever attended,” said Malinowitzer.
