Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. experience to learn how to put lighting on someone’s face so they look good,” said Sabine Gebhard. “Mr. Lennon was a great teacher and I learned so much about a subject that I wanted to explore,” said Jenna Donnelly. “It’s always an exciting day when John Lennon

“My Fair Lady” at Lincoln Center East Islip High School juniors and seniors visited the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center on April 3 to watch Lerner and Loewe’s classic musical production of “My Fair Lady,” featuring Tony-award winners Laura Benanti and Danny Burstein. The students also enjoyed seeing such famous New York City

landmarks as the Lincoln Center fountain, the Metropolitan Opera House and the Julliard School of Music. “Most of our students were familiar with the storyline since ‘Pygmalion,’ the George Bernard Shaw play which is the source material for the musical, is taught in ninth grade,” said English

teacher Linda Leach. “It was exciting to realize that a key role, Mrs. Higgins, was played by Rosemary Harris, a 92-year-old Tonyaward winning actress who performed with many distinguished actors including Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier and Peter O’Toole.”

Best In Show Awards A superb 17 of East Islip High School’s students recently won “Best in Show” awards at the annual Long Island Media Arts Show at Five Towns College, including 15 art students (Niamh Amitrao, Max Calarco, Robert Camlet, Bella Carlozzi, Hailey Cooke, Julia Desiderio, Jenna Donnelly, Sabine Gebhard, Emma Jakits, Jake Kenny, Michael Laird, Anna Langman, Jessica Montijo, Leah Neville and Kerry Smith) and two video production and broadcast television students (Andrew Johnson and Stephanie Milito). “This was my second year in a row receiving a ‘Best in Show’ award and it was such a valuable

experience,” said Donnelly. “It was a fun time and I learned a lot from the experience,” said Cooke. “It was an honor to receive ‘Best in Show’ award for my photography,” said Smith. “This year’s show was another great experience for the students,” said teacher Joy Taylor. “Presenting work for evaluation by professionals in the field can be daunting, and these students have both talent and courage. Congratulations to all of them!” “I am so proud of all of the students that received ‘Best in Show’ awards,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “We even had students win more than

one for their outstanding work in photography and computer graphics.
