On Saturday, June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center. Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner. Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling for Poker
event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100. This year, The
Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m. For those who wish to participate but do not own a sailboat, paddleboard or kayak, rentals are available. For the second straight year, East Islip High School’s academic team emerged from qualifying matches to compete as one of the top eight teams islandwide at the Long Island Regional Quiz Bowl, held on April 2nd at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School.
I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. Continued From 7 cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. For almost a year, Rachel was receiving treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center under the supervision of Dr. Parker. In June of 2013, Rachel was given the opportunity to grant a wish through Make-AWish Suffolk County. Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey. “Knowing that I had this wish gave me something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone. Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!” “A wish gives the patient something to hold on to and look forward to during some of the darkest moments,” said Lauren Sharaby, MS, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “Make-A-Wish gives these kids control over a situation; making a wish gives our patients power, hope and improves their quality of life.” Sharaby, who attended the Make-A-Wish dinner, works firsthand with a lot of the patients who grant wishes through Make-A-Wish. “It lets their imagination run wild while taking the focus off of needles and medicine and hair loss. It gives these children the opportunity to be a kid again and it renews their spirit so they can continue to fight for a cure.”

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a
graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can
give back a medal to a school that has given me so much. If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders. Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

For the third consecutive year, Goldman Sachs volunteers will work with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s corps of volunteer gardeners on May 19th to prepare, plant and mulch the Museum’s large organic vegetable garden. The project includes preparation, weeding and planting the flower gardens around the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry. Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot. Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Nutritional Lesson
Students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently learned a fun lesson on nutrition – from a hippo. JFK PTA President Tracy Rice, Second Vice President Dawn Zimmitti and SEPTA President Sue Kavanagh, along
with volunteers, helped organize a free breakfast for all students at JFK. More than 150 students enjoyed a tasty selection of egg sandwiches, assorted fresh fruits and juices, while Safari Sue (played by Sue) and Henrietta Hippo (portrayed by Rice) spoke to the children about the

The East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy partnered with North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital to present the school’s 2nd Annual Medical Career Day on April 29th, featuring 72 professionals from North Shore-LIJ, dozens of interactive medical exhibits, informational tables and health-related workshop lectures, designed to provide students with working knowledge of career options in the fields of medicine and health. “Two years ago, we
created the Medical Academy program to help students see what it’s like to go into the medical field, and to learn that it can be much more than being a doctor or a nurse,” said Israel Malinowitzer, Career Academy director. “Partnering with North Shore-LIJ has been wonderful, and for this event, their professionals came here for the entire day and were more than willing to sit with our kids, answer their questions, and provide chances for internships.” Raymond Smith, a paramedic supervisor for

With a May 6th victory against Riverhead, the East Islip varsity boys track team finished the season with an undefeated 6-0 record, clinching the league championship. The close 72-64 win came down to the final relay before the Redmen pulled ahead. This was the first time since 1979 that East Islip was spring track champions. The 4x4 relay team
of Zach Acocello, James Kelly, Tom Koppelmann and Alex Newhoff placed first. In discus, East Islip nailed down all three top spots, with throwers Jared Coupe (109 feet, 8 inches) first, Anthony Mattera (109 feet, 6 inches) second and Bob Hayword (107 feet, 4 inches) third. “What a great season, and what a job by the team and the coaches,” said

Second-graders in Mary Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood teamed with associates Bauernfeind’s class at Elementary School Sarah Bjorkgren and Bill Kuhlwilm from the Bay Shore Home Depot to participate in the company’s Kids Workshop Program. Working with parent volunteers and dressed in brightly colored orange Home Depot aprons, the students hammered nails and painted to create a perfect birdhouse. For the in-school program, Home Depot provided all of the tools and materials necessary for the students and their adult helpers to assemble and complete their birdhouses. Project Lifesaver On Tuesday, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine presented a Project Lifesaver informational seminar to parents and caregivers of individuals with Autism and other cognitive impairments. Representatives from
Eastern Suffolk BOCES, as well as local school and medical professionals also attended the event, which was held at the Brookhaven Town Hall Auditorium in Farmingville. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver program is a countywide emergency response locator service
capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments which may cause them to wander and become lost. The program, which Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented in Suffolk County in 2007, combines radio technology and specially trained search and rescue personnel from the
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. Suffolk County Sheriff’s
Office Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a person who has a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome,

I was hooked from that moment and have never regretted my decision to change my intended career path. The desire to pursue a doctorate took a backseat to raising my family and my energy went into becoming the best educator that I could.” As an item writer for the New York State Education Department, she wrote questions for the state’s Regents chemistry exam and participated in pretest and field-test ratings, range-finding, and question editing. She also prepared review questions for the 2005 textbook “Chemistry: The Physical Setting.” She has also served at East Islip as a mentor in the new teacher induction program, a class adviser and a National Honor Society adviser.
Dinota collaborated with a colleague to develop the school’s science research program in 2011. It began with 18 students in the first year course, and has since expanded to include 25 students in a first-year course and an additional nine students continuing through the second and third years. “Working with an extremely limited budget, we have tried to instill a love of science and have begun actively entering a variety of science competitions,” Dinota said. “I love to share the excitement of the students as they delve into their areas of interest, and I enjoy helping them make their way from students to active researchers. It is exciting and rewarding to help students learn about the most recent advances in science and to contemplate their impacts on society.”

East Islip High School science teacher Kathleen Dinota was among only 42 Long Island teachers to be named New York State Master Teachers by Gov. Cuomo’s office. She and the other honorees are the first group of Master Teachers from Long Island. A total of 215 teachers
demonstrate outstanding skills in professional development and peer mentoring. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with the other Master Teachers to improve STEM education in New York,” said Dinota. “I am currently in the third year of a program at Stony Brook University pursuing a Ph.D. in science education. I hope to continue to work with pre-service and new teachers upon completion. The Master Teachers program will be the first step in what I hope will be a new dimension in my teaching career.” Dinota has taught at East Islip High School since 1990, including such subjects as biology, chemistry, life science and marine science. Since 2001, she has taught honors and AP chemistry. Enrollment for the latter course has grown significantly during her tenure. “I am passionate about teaching and my
