John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 1st, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised nearly $3 million for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to James Danowski of Cullen & Danowski, LLP, for his exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of healthcare in our community. Danowski is on the Mather Hospital Board of Directors and is the Chairman of the JTM Foundation and is heading the Hospital’s building capital campaign. He has been an ardent supporter for more than two decades, serving on numerous committees including Buildings and Grounds, Corporate Compliance and Finance and Fund Development. The Founders Award is given to a distinguished individual or organization
with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. This year’s event will also feature The Great Money Ball Drop that will take place prior to the tournament’s shot-gun start. Proceeds from the raffle benefit the Hospital Fund. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner from 5:30-8 pm. Dessert and a raffle drawing is at 7 pm. The golf entry fee is $600 per person or $2,200 per foursome. Tickets for the cocktail/dinner reception only are $150 per person. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Maidstone Club, East Hampton on Wednesday, June 3rd. Twenty–two foursomes will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. The Maidstone Club is a private country club on the Atlantic Ocean in the village of East Hampton. Maidstone Club boasts a private beach, pool, tennis house and club house. The club was founded as a ninhole course in 1891 and expanded to eighteen holes in 1899. The golf course was originally designed by William H. Tucker and is one of the first 100 golf courses in the United States. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,250 or $4,000 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course. The day will end with a reception at 5:30 p.m., to be followed by dinner on the beach at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the TeeOff for Our Teens event will directly support the many evidencebased programs for teens that LICADD currently offers to the community. Savor Youth I’m home for the summer. My first year of college has come and gone. I’ve made lots of friends, and memories. Now, as I’m home for the next four months, I’ve begun to realize that I’m actually almost an adult. Although I’ve had a summer job for years, I am now feeling the pressure to work harder than ever. I understand the importance of developing work ethic at a young age. We are supposed to learn that hard work is the best way to achieve anything in life. We work hard in school, during extracurriculars and throughout the summer. Although the pressure to work hard is rooted in many aspects of a child’s life, the summer job is considered to be the defining line between childhood and adolescence. I feel as though these
summer jobs take away from the sanctity of childhood. Even though I can’t imagine a summer without some form of employment, it would be nice. Regardless, I believe that youth should not be expected to work long hours during the summer. You have to leave some room for being a kid. I remember my first day of work. I was fresh out of middle school. My boss wanted me to know that he would only expect me to work three days a week, because childhood only lasts for so long. Instead of bussing tables or mowing lawns, kids should be focused on being kids. Childhood is without a doubt the best part of life. There is no point in wasting it working. After all, you have the rest of your life to work!

Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Learning Online Safety Sixth-grade social studies classes at Islip Middle School recently welcomed a representative of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Community Response Bureau, who spoke to the students about the importance of internet safety and making
good electronic choices. The officer discussed decisions and consequences, reminded students to be extremely careful when they do go online and encouraged them to think about other activities they could do to limit their “connected
time.” “The 21st century has brought a generation of technological natives,” said Assistant Principal James Cameron. “With that, the need for internet awareness and safety training is paramount for our students.”
Supporting SADD East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club held its first SADD Awareness Day on April 30th, bringing awareness to many issues that SADD addresses including suicide, drunk driving, texting and driving, eating disorders and cyber bullying. According to SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo, the idea for the event came from previous SADD members, who wanted to have a day where students
could meet and speak to a variety of organizations that aid teens who have made destructive decisions and help in preventing future poor decisions. Numerous organizations were in attendance at the school, showing their support for SADD and providing opportunities for students to sign up to volunteer and get involved in their community. In addition to a sobriety testing station, four positive activity tables showcased things students
can do instead of making destructive decisions, such as drawing, creative writing, listening to music, exercise, yoga and martial arts. “Our students enjoyed the day of activities and speaking with the different organizations,” said Lopiccolo. “The SADD club members worked very hard to put it together and for next year, they are already thinking of ideas to add to the program.”

Youth In Government For the past 36 years, the Town of Islip has partnered with the Islip Order of Elks to provide a Youth in Government experience for local students. Recently, 10 local middle school students from across Islip Town took part in the tours and meetings that are a part of
this tradition. The students were escorted by Town of Islip personnel and local Elks leaders through the Waste Energy Facility and the MacArthur Airport Fire and Rescue facility. At the Waste Energy Facility the students witnessed first-hand how trash is converted
into energy for tens of thousands of homes. At the airport, members of the Fire and Rescue team demonstrated how they respond to emergencies. The students concluded their visit with a question and answer session at Town Hall with Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
Girls Golf Gels
Overcoming adversity and folding in some new faces, the East Islip varsity girls golf team has begun to gel, uniting studentathletes from both the high school and middle school. This year’s 13-girl roster – seniors Jenna Herr and Justina Marku; juniors Katherine Dodenhoff, Kristin Linz, Kate Maretsky and Anna
Wulforst; sophomore Eve Collier; freshman Krissy Mercurio; eighth-graders Nicole Muroff and Camryn Kreucsher; and seventhgraders Sophia Bates, Sofia Ferrezza and Bridget Welch – includes six newcomers who tried out and made the team. Many of the athletes have participated in Saturday clinics with Kevin Connelly, the PGA
assistant professional at Timber Point Golf Course. “We have been working hard in wind, rain and fog all season to climb back to .500,” said coach Judith Fischer. “We started our season mostly indoors due to the harsh weather and leftover snow and ice, and it has been really tough to be on a golf course.”

After rain drove their annual Earth Day Walk indoors last spring, students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary were excited to prepare to get outside this year, creating banners to emphasize the importance of reducing, reusing and
recycling. The entire student body, faculty and staff were joined by JFK parents on May 1st for an inspirational and educational journey around the neighborhood, down Woodland Drive and back through the playground, where they
rallied for a sing-along on water conservation with music teacher James Santoro. “Our students displayed many ways to help nurture and save our environment,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke.
Making His Mark Anoune Basse, a new student at the Cleary School for the Deaf’s secondary program at East Islip High School, joined East Islip’s boys spring track team in March, where he has made a mark as a sprinter in the
100-meter, 200-meter and relay events. “Anoune is participating in numerous track meets and invitationals this season across Suffolk County, representing East Islip High School,”

The BCME’s Best Communities award is decided on a variety of metrics reviewed by the University of Kansasaffiliated Institute for Educational Research and Public Service, including student enrollment in music courses, Advanced Placement or honors weighted music courses offered, the number of minutes per week devoted to both classroom music and performing ensembles, and the appropriate districtwide staffing of certified music teachers.

MEMORIAL DAY HONOR THE BRAVE
On May 2nd, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws hosted their firstever Inlet Ride Bike-AThon in Westhampton Beach. Over 100 bicyclists participated in this event, with funds raised going to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Bicyclists enjoyed a 28-mile ride along Dune Road from the Moriches Inlet at Cupsogue Beach to the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays and back. Refreshments were
provided along the way and prizes were awarded to the top three riders who raised more than $500. The first 400 entrants to register received a free Inlet Ride T-shirt. After the event, all the riders were treated to lunch. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality,
dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently swore in over 120 students into the Ambassador Program, a program that is run and created by Town of Islip Anti Bias Task Force Chairman Rabbi Moss and Co-Chairwoman Mary Louise Cohen. The students are selected from nine high schools and middle schools. They meet four times each year, rotating locations. Sessions feature guest speakers who tell stories of various biases and present a final project
about how they will take what they have learned and make a difference in their schools and communities. This program has grown quite significantly since its inception five years ago. They hope to continue to expand and include all middle and high schools throughout the Town of Islip. “It is encouraging to see these young leaders come together in an effort to improve relations within our community and promote equality,”
During the week of April 27th, kindergarten and first-grade classes at Islip’s Wing Elementary School had the opportunity to observe the beginning of life, watching daily as eggs hatched into ducklings. Accompanying a teaching unit on ducks and their life cycle, each
classroom was provided with five duck eggs from a local farm, which were kept in heated, see-through tanks for the students to observe – both visually and aurally – until they hatched into fuzzy yellow ducklings. At week’s end, the ducklings returned to the farm, leaving the
students with an indelible memory and a tangible connection to their biology curriculum. “It was a very exciting week at Wing,” said teacher Lucy Katsch. “The children were given the experience of a lifetime.”

In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, the East Islip School District embarked on a wide-ranging awareness campaign and slate of related activities during April. Each school in the district organized informational and awareness projects as well as fundraising initiatives. Classes made posters with facts about autism and informational poster boards were displayed in the many of the schools. “I am confident that the creative initiatives in each school truly helped to raise awareness and answer questions about autism spectrum disorders,” said Susan Kosser, the district’s assistant to the superintendent for student support services. “It was wonderful to see all students – including our students with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities – as well as staff participating in this important initiative.” Connetquot, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools recognized World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, with students and staff dressed in primary colors that represent autism awareness. Students at the schools also colored various puzzle pieces, hung in prominent location, to represent the motto “We all fit together.” Over at JFK, the month was celebrated with various fun and educational activities including a special “Autism Cube” donated by the EJ Autism Foundation. After students painted the different puzzle pieces on the cube, it was put on display in the school’s main lobby.
East Islip High School dedicated April 1 and 2 to autism awareness, with students from the career development program and Girls Leaders Club selling “I Support Autism Awareness” puzzle pieces outside the cafeteria during lunch periods. The puzzles were displayed throughout the school. According to school psychologist Lauren Costantino, the proceeds were donated to the local EJ Autism Foundation.
East Islip Middle School chose to celebrate autism awareness during the week of April 20.
“Our focus was to not only educate one another about autism, one of the fastest growing developmental disorders, but to celebrate our uniqueness,” said technology teacher Brian Heyanka. “Throughout the week, students were provided opportunities to learn about autism and embrace our differences.” The week began at the middle school with the sharing of a video clip during science classes. Each day afterward, students were encouraged to search the building for a hidden fact. Students who recorded all of their answers or wore a shirt in support of autism were able to enter a raffle to decide an ice bucket challenge, with the end result being the selection of Principal Mark Bernard and Assistant Principal Jason Stanton to be doused with ice water. The middle school’s Art Club created an autism awareness banner, and during lunch periods, the Best Buddies club set up an informational booth and sold bracelets to raise money for the EJ Autism Foundation, with purchasers entered into a raffle to win an autism awareness shirt. Heyanka’s technology classes were able to utilize their Full Spectrum Laser engraver to create a stunning sign for National Autism Awareness Month. His classes watched videos relating to autism and conducted research before engraving facts and inspirational quotes about the disorder onto a huge piece of wood that was later displayed in the school’s lobby.

On April 23rd, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fun exciting new event – a luncheon featuring games (mahjong and canasta), vendor boutiques and a powerful engaging keynote speaker. With more than 175 guests in attendance, the event raised more than $50,000 to support the programs and services of the Guidance Center. The keynote speaker was award-winning journalist Edie Magnus. Ms. Magnus is the Executive Producer of the PBS documentary, Cry for Help, and is currently the Executive Director of Media & Innovation at Mercy College. Janice Ashley of Signature Bank, Amy Cantor and Alexis Siegel, all members of the Guidance Center’s Board of Directors, co-chaired the luncheon.
