Islip Middle School’s Shared Decision-Making Committee recently hosted the school’s firstever students vs. staff badminton tournament as a special PTA fundraiser.

Participants paired up to form 60 two-person teams for the single elimination competition, which lasted for more than two

hours until a tournament champion was named.

Students and staff enjoyed playing as well as watching their peers and teachers compete.

In the final match, Kevin Horner and John Zembrzycki prevailed over Eugenio Cardona and James Walsh in a nailbiting overtime contest.

Alyssa Muschenick and Eve Schnatz earned third place with a victory over Erik Kristiansen and Evan Krut.

“All the teams played extremely well, and onlookers were in awe as they competed,” teacher Meghan Shelton said.

“Our students and staff are excited to come together for fun future events.”

Four fantastic Islip High School students, all boasting outstanding character and patriotism, were chosen by Islip American Legion RusyBohm Post 411 to attend this summer’s Boys’ State

and American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State leadership programs.

Aidan Ferrera and Stephen Plotke were chosen as primary delegates for Boys’ State, while Gabriella Flora and Olivia

Piazzolla were chosen as citizens for Empire Girls State. American Legion representatives recently visited the school to congratulate the winning students.

The Charity of the Month for May is

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The primary mission of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is to promote selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program.

EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible.

The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.

Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability.

Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on field trips to help enrich the learning process.

Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing.

EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support.

Group Day Habilitation Services: Fortunately, having a developmental disability doesn’t preclude one from becoming an involved, contributing member of society. 2022 Long Island Hospitaltiy Ball Continuing The Fight Against Cancer With The “Who’s Who” In Hospitality Join the LIHB in the fight against Breast Cancer for the 10th Anniversary Addition 2022 Long Island Hospitality Ball. For the 6th year we are benefitting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY on Monday, June 27, 2022.

In the spirit of generosity, three industry peers will be honored in 2022 for their achievements. This year the goal is to raise $500,000 for our recipient and partner in fighting cancer, CAROL M. BALDWIN BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FUND. THE LONG ISLAND HOSPITALITY BALL LIHB shows off its hospitality talents by showcasing offerings from the region’s top restaurants, wine and spirit brands, nightclubs and entertainers as well as hotels and catering

halls. The LIHB was founded in 2011 by Keith Hart and the LIHB Board of Directors. Mr. Hart is a hospitality industry guru and cancer survivor.

His personal battle with cancer is now in remission and has inspired him to rally the industry to join the fight against cancer.

As part of this year’s 10 th Anniversary the LIHB is also celebrating 3 Decades of the HART AGENCY as we invite back models and staff for a company reunion. Long Island’s top cover bands and entertainers, including on the main outdoor stage “Michael DelGuidice” with a little help from his friends and on the inside stage “DJ Theo”, “That 70’s Band” and some of your favorite throwback recording artists along with other performers throughout the property and throughout the evening that will be named later. Many celebrities and sports stars are expected to attend. This event is indoor/outdoor and is rain or shine.
