The Covid-19 crisis has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard, and Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, is no exception. The property closed its doors back in mid-March with hopes to reopen on May 22, but with much still unknown, Woodloch refused to simply stand by and wait.

Having been in business for 62 years, the Poconos resort has emerged triumphant from its fair share of challenges, never shying away from difficult times and always working to turn negatives into positives.

Family-owned and operated since 1958, Woodloch’s core mission is built upon treating guests and staff like “company in our homes.” Although the property remains shuttered, it has been working hard to maintain the Woodloch spirit for guests, staff and the entire community in an effort to spread light in a time of darkness. Initiatives include the following: The launch of Woodloch at Home, a treasure trove of activities and games that can be accessed remotely through both the resort’s website and social media channels. Activities include tried and true guest favorites such as scavenger hunts, “Olympics,” game show and athletic contests, deejay-led dance parties and even a “Concert on the

Couch” series, featuring a diverse array of talent acts performed by both guests and employees. All programming takes place digitally so that individual families can remain in the privacy of their own homes while staying connected with Woodloch’s energetic staffers as well as each other.

On March 21, The Woodloch Family gave each of its 950 hourly team members an additional week’s worth of wages to compensate them during the first week of shutdown from March 16 – 22.

The Woodloch Family hosted two separate food drives, one on March 26 and the other on April 10, where they distributed over 800 care packages to staff members. These included an assortment of items such as pasta, meat, milk, eggs, juice, canned goods, toilet paper, baked goods from the resort’s in-house bakery as well as salad greens and herb bundles from the organic farm at Woodloch’s destination spa. An additional 300 packages were donated to local Pike and Wayne County food shelters.

Woodloch donated all of its available N95 respirator masks to the local community hospital, Wayne Memorial.

Additionally, Woodloch’s bakery distributed care packages to hospital staff, local urgent care, and local EMS on Friday, April 17.

“We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.”

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

Recently they received a phone call from the Public Safety at Eisenhower Park, who mentioned that a cat had been stuck in a tree for at least five days and no one was able to get it down. Soon after, the Guardians arrived and climbed over 75 feet to successfully bring the cat down to safety. They not only rescued the cat, but they are now continuing to take care of her the best they can.

Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the

Islip fourth- and fifthgraders from Commack Road and Maud S. Sherwood elementary schools found success competing in the 34th annual Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest on March 7, with two young athletes named place winners.

Commack Road’s Hailey Alvarez won first place for fifth-grade girls, while Sherwood’s Jackson Doring earned second for fifth-grade boys.

Other tournament participants included Commack Road fourth graders Morgan Lella and Liam Ryan, and fifth grader Chase Hansen; and Sherwood fourth graders Erik Kristiansen and Emmie Wallace, and fifth grader Jane Tierney.

Meet Islip High School’s Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Islip High School’s Class of 2020 valedictorian and salutatorian are Darienne Rogers and Madelyn Germano, respectively.

Rogers, who earned a 106.30 weighted GPA, is an AP Scholar with Distinction and serves as president of the school’s Science Olympiad team. She is a member of Islip’s National Honor Society and student government, attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference, and was a founder of the school’s robotics teams.

While playing for the varsity tennis team as a senior, she was named a county doubles champion.

Rogers will attend Duke University, majoring in biomedical engineering.

Germano, who earned a 105.87 weighted GPA, is a National Merit Commended Student and AP Scholar with Distinction.

She was elected class president for four consecutive years and has been a member of and annual medalist with the Science Olympiad team

since 2014 and co-captain since 2018. As a member of the varsity tennis team since 2014 and co-captain since 2017, she contributed to the Lady Bucs six consecutive undefeated seasons and league and division championships, earned 100 varsity wins and won the 2019 NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Award.

Germano will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in neuroscience.

Islip’s Staff Car Parade Spurs Pride And Positivity For more than two hours on the afternoon of April 28, Islip resounded with cheers and car horns as Islip High School held a staff car parade, with more than 50 teachers and administrators driving through the school community to waves and smiles from overjoyed students and families.

The route included a stop

at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School to wave to the families of valedictorian Darienne Rogers and salutatorian Maddie Germano.

“Driving in the parade today was very emotional, but the positivity of the teachers, staff, administrators and residents was incredible,” said English teacher

Meghan Stern, the school’s Student Union adviser. “Witnessing the cheers of the students and community members was truly an amazing exhibit of Islip pride. Words cannot express how thankful we are to them, and to the Islip Fire Department for joining us.”

During this period of uncertainty, finding ways to pay bills or keep medical benefits are top concerns for many. Here are some tips from Janine Nowatzky, managing director of Inside Rx. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up?

Unemployment insurance is a program between your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes: • Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa.gov/ unemployment.

How much money will I

get?

It will vary by state.

But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID-19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit.

What about health insurance?

It’s scary to think about getting through this pandemic without health insurance. What benefits you’re able to keep all depends on who you work for. The first step is to ask your employer. They may allow you to continue your health coverage for a short period of absence.

If your employer is allowing you to keep your insurance, be sure to clarify if your missed premium payments will be: • Covered partially or fully by your employer • Deducted when you come back to work • Have to be paid now to continue getting insurance Your employer may also offer health care coverage through COBRA, but that can be very expensive.

A limited number of states have also opened enrollment to their own Affordable Care Act

A Sweet Lesson At Wing Early in March, first graders in Lisa Dieumegard’s class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School were treated to a visit from local author and illustrator Nancy Ann Bowe.

Bowe spent the morning reading her stories to the children and teaching them all about honeybees and caterpillars. “Arnie

and the Magic Caterpillars” explained the process of metamorphosis, with the students enjoying learning about each of the stages involved as a caterpillar grows and changes into a beautiful butterfly. Ms. Bowe also read her story. Ms. Bowe told the students that she wrote “Queen Bee by the Sea” to teach children to

love, honor and respect hardworking honeybees as the pollinators that we all depend on.

“The children loved the stories and had a great morning with Ms. Bowe,” Dieumegard said. “They were all very excited when she gave us the books to keep in our class library.”

15-ounce cans navy beans, drained and rinsed 4 slices applewood- or pecan wood-smoked bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 cup diced yellow onion 11⁄2 cups ketchup 1⁄4 cup + 2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses 1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 11⁄4 teaspoons ground mustard 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon kosher salt Preheat the oven to 350 F. Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion. Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes.

Add the salt and stir.

Uncover and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup sliced shallot 1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely

Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat.

Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate.

In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes.

Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool.

In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled mushroom mixture until combined.

Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log.

Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to

bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper.

Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes.

Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease.

Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl

(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective

at combatting that virus as well.

Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

(StatePoint) Millions of U.S. residents will receive government stimulus payments (also known as Economic Impact Payments) under the CARES Act. Payments to eligible recipients will arrive by either direct deposit or a paper check.

Here are some helpful tips from Wells Fargo that may help you access your funds as soon as possible.

1. Determine if you qualify for a government stimulus payment. Your eligibility is determined by the federal government. To learn more about eligibility and payment amounts, visit IRS.gov/coronavirus under the “Economic Impact Payments” link.

2. Learn how you’ll receive your stimulus payment. If you filed a federal tax return in 2019 or 2018 and typically receive your tax refund

Charity Wins In Spite of Quarantine The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope 5K Succeeds, Virtually

The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself.

The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic elementary schools.

Families Who Have A Loved One In A Nursing Home Need To Ask These Six (6) Questions Now! The NYS Department of Health (DOH) strongly encourages nursing homes and other adult care facilities to implement communication protocols for both residents and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic including when the facility learns of a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19.

According to Governor Cuomo’s office, at least 1,064 New Yorkers have died in nursing home facilities since the onset of this Pandemic.

Asking the right question and establishing effective communication is extremely important to the well-being of your loved one residing in a long-term care facility.

After consultation with leading experts on nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other

long-term care facilities, AARP urges families with loved ones in nursing homes to ask these six key questions of nursing home administrators and staff.

1. Has anyone in the nursing home tested positive for COVID-19?

• The NYS DOH recommends that longterm care facilities report this information; however, it is not a requirement so families must ask this question specifically.

2. What is the nursing home doing to prevent infections?

• How are nursing home staff, residents and others being screened for COVID-19, especially when they leave and reenter the home?

• What precautions are being required of residents, including

covering of noses and mouths when staff is in the room, and how is the nursing home helping them to comply?

• Is the nursing home assigning special staff or units for the care of residents who have tested positive for Covid-19?

3. Does nursing home staff have the personal protective equipment (PPE) – such as masks, face shields, gowns, gloves—that they need to stay safe, and keep their patients safe?

• Have nursing home staff been given specific training on how to use this PPE? • If not enough PPE is available, what is the plan to obtain personal protective equipment?

4. What is the nursing home doing to help

residents stay connected with their families or other loved ones during this time?

• Does the nursing home help residents call their loved ones by phone or video call?

• Will the nursing home set up a regular schedule for you to speak with your loved one?

5. What is the plan for the nursing home to communicate important information to both residents and families on a regular basis?

• Will the nursing home be contacting you by phone or email, and when?

6. Is the nursing home currently at full staffing levels for nurses, aides, and other workers?

• What is the plan to make sure the needs of nursing home residents are met—like bathing,

feeding, medication management, social engagement—if the nursing home has staffing shortages?

“New Yorkers need to communicate with their loved ones in nursing homes on a regular basis and to be aware if the virus is present in the facility.” said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel.
