Grant Mason Dollmann, an Eagle Scout with Troop 205 Great River, has earned the Boy Scouts of America Triple Crown Award for having participated in three High Adventure Camping Activities. To qualify for this award, Grant has camped and backpacked at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, camped and trained in sub zero weather conditions at Northern Tier Minnesota, and scuba dived and snorkeled at Sea Base in the Florida Keys. Grant attended Philmont, New Mexico, with 10 of his fellow Scouts from Troop 205 in the Summer of 2016. altitude they would encounter at Philmont. Prior to the backpacking experience, the Scouts visited the U.S. Air Force Academy and white water rafted in Colorado. They then began an 80 mile backpacking adventure over a ten day period in the mountains of New Mexico. They were able

to experience western activities including horseback riding, black powder rifle shooting, lassoing and ax throwing. Grant attended OKPIK at Northern Tier the last week of 2016. Northern Tier is in Minnesota, on the Canadian border. Grant camped in a snow shelter he built on a frozen lake in sub zero temperatures.

He learned cold weather survival skills and, to ice fish, snowshoe and cross country ski. He also had the opportunity to work with sled dogs and to experience dog mushing. In February 2017, Grant and other Scouts from Troop 205 travelled to Sea Base in Florida and stayed aboard the Conch Pearl a sailing vessel for a week

while scuba diving. The Scouts had to become PADI Certified prior to the trip and started dive training at the end of summer in 2016. The Scouts were also able to enjoy fishing and swimming on their trip. Grant will be attending Summit Bechtel Reserve High Adventure this Summer in West

Virginia for Advanced Rock Climbing where he will build upon his climbing skills. Grant will also attend the National Jamboree this Summer at Summit West Virginia with Troop 205: renumbered Troop 1233 by the Jamboree staff. Grant has been elected the Senior Patrol Leader by the 40 Scouts of Troop

1233. Grant believes that his involvement in Scouting has given him adventures and experiences that have helped shape his life in an extremely positive manner and encourages everyone to embrace and enjoy the great outdoors. Troop 205’s motto is “The best is yet to come.” Truly it is.

Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Take Heart With Tea The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Bridging the Transition Islip High School’s peer ambassadors, led by Assistant Principal Lisa Ward and school counselor Nicole Hall, recently visited Islip Middle School to talk to eighth-grade students about high school life. Before the 20 peer ambassadors came to speak, the eighth-graders watched a video tour of the high school, narrated

by senior Ryan Lange, to prepare them for the experience. Lange later introduced some of the high school staff at various points in the school day. The eighthgraders used the prep time to brainstorm questions about the high school and ninth grade for them to ask the peer ambassadors, who also discussed high

school myths, fears and opportunities. “The ambassadors were so mature, organized, and prepared,” said middle school counselor Kelly Doheny. “What wonderful role models! I think the middle school students were really impressed and learned so much.”

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - The Islip Town Board recently held its annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring students from across the Town in a range of subjects. The students had to demonstrate that their success in a subject went above and beyond what is normally expected of a student. The Town Board members thanked the students for their hard work, and thanked the parents and teachers as well who have succeeded alongside the students.

Islip’s recent annual spring districtwide String Festival, held at Islip Middle School’s auditorium, featured performers from around the district, including two orchestras each from Commack Road Elementary School, Sherwood Elementary School and the middle school, and the high school’s orchestra, chamber orchestra and electric string ensemble. This year the event’s musical selections included Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking

Out Loud,” performed by guitar students and the combined middle and high school orchestras. Continuing a tradition, the event culminated in a performance of the combined ensembles, with nearly 300 students playing the “William Tell Overture.” According to Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts, the String Festival began three years in response to a lack of opportunity for student string players.

A Chance to Shine “Musicians other than string players have lots of chances to both perform and hear great local performances,” said Green. “Marching bands and choral concerts abound, but orchestral gigs are less common. We wanted our students to have the opportunity to stand sideby-side with players like them, whether it’s the senior recalling what his first sounds were like or the fourth-grader aspiring to play the electric cello in high school.”

Bond Resolutions Approved The Islip Town Board recently passed bond resolutions that authorized the Town to begin drainage improvements throughout the Town, repave parking lots, improve the Town parking lots and sidewalks as well as acquire emergency service radios, and light and heavy equipment. The total approved in authorizing bonds is just over $5 million. “I’m encouraged that the funding for these improvements to some of

the Town’s infrastructure was approved by the Town Board, but there is more that needs to be done, to bring our infrastructure to a level that our residents deserve,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Among the approved bonds $800,000 for drain age improvements which will allow the Town to immediately begin addressing neighborhoods most afflicted by regular flooding. The goal is that eventually, drainage systems throughout the

Town will be upgraded and equipped to handle severe weather events. The Town Board failed to approve a bond resolution that would have allowed necessary improvements at the Town’s Bay Shore Marina and bulkheading to finally begin. This further delay may now continue into the boating season, threatening what has normally been an economic and cultural benefit for our Town and its residents. A bond resolution that

would have expanded the parking management program to other areas of the Town also failed to gain the necessary approval despite the estimated $1 million in net revenue that such a project was anticipated to generate, to maintain the overall upgrades to parking across the Town. In addition, the bond resolution to construct a new animal shelter once again failed to gain the necessary votes. Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined

Councilmen Steve Flotteron and John Cochrane, Jr. voting in favor of the measure, which would allow the Town to finally construct a shelter to replace the antiquated sub-standard structure originally build in the 1960’s that does not meet today’s standards. “Right now the Town enjoys a Aaa bond rating, the highest possible credit rating that a government can achieve, allowing us to obtain this borrowing at a vastly reduced interest

rate. Our families and businesses deserve better facilities and infrastructure than they had to endure in the past, and there is no better time for the Town to seek the funding that would make theses necessary improvements a reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter. The Town Board will have another chance to pass these critical resolutions at a future meeting.

Ten Terriﬁc Athletes Ten terrific studentathletes from Islip High School signed national letters of intent on April 18th, celebrating with family, friends, coaches and administrators at a ceremony in the school’s library. This fall, Emma Baumbusch (soccer) will attend Kings College in Wilkes-Barre,

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron, and members of the Islip Town Board, joined nearly one hundred community volunteers, members of Keep Islip Clean (KIC) and Youth Environmental Services, to continue the beautification of Brookwood Hall in East Islip at the Town’s 3rd

annual Gardening Day. The project, spearheaded by Councilman Flotteron, brought together dozens of dedicated citizens, who worked throughout the day to clean-up and beautify the estate’s grounds at Brookwood Hall. Staff and volunteers planted 24 ornamental cherry trees, which now

line the property’s original gated Main Street entrance at the waterfall. Flowers were planted around the estate’s signage, and additional shrubbery was added to the lakefront esplanade. Volunteers also cleared debris throughout the day.
