The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services.

Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed

and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.”

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Uplifting Community News!

A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all.

Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.

With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

While the dinner table might be where families catch up and share stories of their day, breaking bread at breakfast time can be just as enjoyable. That’s especially true when families take the time to create homemade breakfasts, such as the following recipe for “Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries” from Susie Cushner’s “Sunday Brunch” (Chronicle Books).

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries Makes about 6 5- to 6-inch waffles Serves 4 to 6 Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles 21⁄4 cups white whole-wheat flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 11⁄4 cups whole milk 1⁄2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 2 eggs, separated 5 teaspoons packed, grated orange zest

How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra

essentials - resulting in shortages.

Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers?

The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because

they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.

Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top

of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria.

Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease.

Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl

(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective

at combatting that virus as well.

Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

Sherwood’s Recycling Club Takes Action

A grassroots recycling program, helmed by teacher Karen Magee, has bloomed at Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School.

The Recycling Club initiative was born when Magee started to bring home paper to recycle, and wondered why schools couldn’t put their recyclables out on the curb like residents.

After getting advice from the high school’s Keep

Islip Clean Club adviser Wayne Mennecke, and the town’s Keep Islip Clean organization, Magee determined the cost and began the project in 2019, aided by enthusiastic Student Council helpers.

Earlier this year, Sherwood’s Recycling Club placed a blue bin and sign in the cafeteria for students to recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans, and Town of Islip Department of Environmental

Conservation recycling educator Danielle Wynn visited for an informative assembly including tips on technology recycling, creating recycled paper and what items can be recycled.

“Everyone’s minds are all for helping the earth and recycling and doing what’s right,” Magee said.

“It’s just a matter of taking the actions.”

USING FACS SKILLS TO SEW MASK HEADBANDS - Riley Tamburello, a sixth grader at Islip Middle School, has been making special headbands for her mother, an occupational therapist in Middle Island, and her mother’s coworkers, using sewing skills learned in Natalie DeSena’s family and consumer science class. Celebrating The Study Of Languages At East Islip HS The annual Foreign Language Week brought exciting activities and celebrations of French, Italian and Spanish language and culture as well as American Sign Language to East Islip High

School during the first week of March, confirming the importance of studying world languages.

For the day devoted to American Sign Language, advanced ASL students interpreted popular songs,

taught basic signs and played fun games in the library to spread deaf awareness to their fellow peers who are enrolled in a foreign language.

As part of the week’s initiative, students were

asked to participate in a poster contest to encourage learning new languages, with this year’s theme being “Explore a Language, The World Needs You!” The winners, selected by art teacher

Daniel Figliozzi, were awarded with Barnes & Noble gift certificates provided by the high school’s former language director, Dr. Janet Hiller.

Genesis Madera-Blondet earned first place for her

poster, while Ella Centauro came in second, Olivia Zhang took third and Madison Sturtz earned honorable mention.
