This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps
(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly
come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact. Set aside and cover to retain heat. Boil and then simmer rice, according

Students at Islip’s Wing Elementary School wrapped up Autism Awareness Week with an April 5 parade around the building, promoting inclusion and self-
determination for all. During the days prior, each student participated in activities revolving around the awareness and acceptance of all students, guided by
teacher Nicole Howley and school psychologist Nancy Sferrazza. The building was filled both inside and outside with symbols showing support during Autism Awareness Month.
Dance Inspires Inclusion Dance Connection of Islip became a member studio of a new program, Wingman for Dance, to continue their efforts to foster a positive, supportive, and inspirational atmosphere in their studio. The program is led by Miss Jenn D’Auria, and student leaders Allison Bradley, Taylor Capozzoli, Emily Civitella, Melissa Kinnear, Ginger Mastrosimone, and Lilly Scholl who lead their Competition and Performance teams in activities that help each dancer to recognize what makes them unique and special, and build their confidence. The goal is to
“inspire dancers to become helpful heroes that go above and beyond for each other.” “The wingman program is a great addition to our dance studio and I am honored to be our studio mentor. The Wingman program brings team bonding as well as self reflection, it inspires dancers to go above and beyond to help each other”, Jennifer D’Auria, Wingman Mentor, Dance Connection Teacher. Wingman for Dance is part of Dylan’s Wings of Change, a foundation dedicated to the memory of Dylan Hockley, who was
killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. Vito’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, starting at 7:30PM at the Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road, East Islip, NY 11730. Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is pleased to announce its Bicentennial Birthday Calendar in honor of Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday. Celebrations continue throughout the year including: three multiday conferences, multiple poetry events, four community collaborations, five “Distinguished Speaker” lectures with Whitman scholars, Whitman Family Reunion & Oral History Project, three Whitman-related exhibitions, Library of Congress Facsimile Exhibit and Lecture, banners in Huntington Township, and a proposal to US Stamp Advisory Committee for 2019 issue of Whitman Postage Stamp. On May 31, 2019, WWBA hosts a day full of revelries featuring
music, performances, and a scholarly lecture. Later that day, join fellow Whitman enthusiasts for a “Happy Birthday Hour” toast in honor of his 200th Birthday. The celebration continues on June 1 with marathon readings of Leaves of Grass, several poetry presentations, and a Poet’s Picnic. The birthday weekend concludes on Sunday, June 2 in which students offer presentations of their poetry, art and theatrical works. In addition, Gary Schmidgall will speak at the Birthplace on June 28 in honor of Stonewall’s 50th anniversary. WWBA also hosts the Whitman Family Reunion in July, and the Walt Whitman International Conference, showcasing scholarly treatises from around the globe and featuring keynote speaker Ed Folsom

Three exhibits will be displayed on rotation throughout the year: Prose & Poetry in Products and Advertisements from the personal collection of Ed Centeno, WWBA Poets-inResidence – A Photography Exhibit by B.A. Van Sise, and WWBA’s Archive Exhibit. WWBA is refurbishing its Interpretive Center with retouched portraits of Whitman and a panel detailing Whitman’s years as a Long Island schoolteacher. WWBA thanks the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, Humanities NY, Huntington Arts Council, Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation for making this programming possible.
West Islip High School research student Tristan Tran has been accepted to participate in the Feinstein Institute summer student intern program. The junior will work with Dr. Daniel Grande on disease-oriented research. The Feinstein Institute internship program is designed to provide

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns (NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home. According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas—up from 79 percent in 2000. Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on the environment. The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and
slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone. Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the manmade surface area in urban areas. When analyzing effective UHI mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or all of the projected future warming trends.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent ordinances calling for cool roof technology, 3M
developed Cool Roofing Granules. These granules are used in shingles that can be energy efficient, solar reflective and economically friendly. This technology can reduce urban heating as well as lower energy consumption in climates with year-round cooling needs. In addition, many of the shingles that contain 3M Cool Granules meet Energy Star requirements, making them the premier choice for green building. Further, the granules are available in a wide variety of rich colors that can create the perfect shingle color blend. The Eradication of Smog Another problem in urban areas is smog pollution, caused by a buildup of
nitrogen oxides in the air. An estimated four in 10 Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. To combat this growing concern, 3M recently launched Smog-reducing Granules, which help remove smog pollution using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, the granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. As sunlight hits the shingles, radicals are generated, transforming nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions, thereby improving air quality. “3M is leading the way with roofing technology solutions for improving
environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M. “The roofing granules are a first for residential asphalt shingles. Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website. To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members. If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance. The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their
