The Town of Islip Memorial Day parade will step off to patriotic music at 10 a.m. on May 26th, departing from the intersection of Saxon Avenue and Main Street in Islip, New York. The parade, organized by American Legion Post #411 of Islip in partnership with the Rudolph Henry Casper AMVETS Post #18 and the American Legion 4-S Post of East Islip, is a continuance of their long-time cooperation in service to the community. A solid public turnout in remembrance of America’s heroes is these veterans group’s only desired reward. As in past years, Police, emergency medical, fire and antique vehicles will be part of the procession, with marching bands, singers, former military members, scouting groups, youth clubs, civic associations and historical re-enactors joining the line of march. This impressive mobile assembly will track 1.5 miles east along Main Street through the heart of Islip town -- pausing to render honors at 401 Main Street – and conclude at the intersection of Nassau Avenue. County and local officials

will meet the marchers at the wartime monument on Town Hall grounds, then take part in an 11 a.m. Memorial Day ceremony. Those presently scheduled to speak include Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr. Pastor Kris Baudler of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brentwood, will deliver the invocation and benediction. Recently retired as a Navy Captain, Mr. Cochrane has also been selected Grand Marshal

for this year’s festive event (BIO APPENDED). Light refreshments will be served and a special dedication to a three-generation line of former Post members will be held at the nearby Rusy Bohm Hall on conclusion of parade ceremonies. SCAVENGER HUNT - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently met with a group of students from Commack Road Elementary School who were visiting Town Hall to participate in a scavenger hunt aimed at helping students learn more about their local government. Councilman Flotteron gave students a brief tour of some of the Town’s departments and then welcomed them to his office, where he explained his role as an Islip Town Board Member.

Celebrating Earth Day Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Legislator Kara Hahn, Tom Ronayne, Suffolk County Director of Veterans Services and Suffolk County veterans to plant two Cherry Blossom trees in honor of Earth Day and our veterans. “As we celebrate Earth Day across the globe, we must individually and collectively do all we can to save our planet and protect our environment,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Today, I have the honor of planting two trees in Suffolk County’s Armed Forces Plaza in tribute and salute to our veterans who give of their lives to protect our freedoms. I would like to give a special thank you to Seatuck Nurseries in Eastport for donating the trees and partnering with Suffolk County.” Tree planting is a great way to celebrate Earth Day as it beautifies an area but more importantly trees help produce oxygen and filter out pollutants to clean the air and also help preserve water levels in the soil. “Tress are both symbolic of the cycles in each person’s life and serve as a reminder of the renewal of nature,” said Legislator Kara Hahn, sponsor of a 2012 bill creating a memorial arbor program for Suffolk County Parks. “Therefore the planting of a tree is one of the most fitting and lasting tributes to the memory of a loved one.”

Enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer before the thermometer hits 90º and everyone runs back inside to their air conditioners – a different sort of hibernation. “Cruising through the Decades” was the theme for this year’s East Islip High School Fashion Show on March 26th. The annual event, coordinated by the school’s SADD club, raised $1,400 for the senior SADD scholarship to be awarded in June. More than 60 students and teachers participated, enthusiastically following the theme with fun outfits from the ’70s, ’80s and

’90s. Seniors were decked out in prom wear donated by RSVP Tuxedos in Bay Shore and Estelle’s Dressy Dresses of Farmingdale. Jon Joseph Salon in Islip Terrace donated salon services for all of the senior girls in the show. Serving as the evening’s emcee, Assistant Principal Nicholas Bilotti kept the audience laughing, while student and guest DJ Chris Abbatepaolo kept them

The East Islip boys varsity and JV lacrosse teams hosted their first Coaches & Players vs. Cancer event on April 5th, featuring non-league games against Plainedge High School. A JV matchup at 10 a.m. was followed by a varsity game at noon.

This year’s event, the Tee-off In The Tropics, will be held on Monday, June 2nd at the Bellport Country Club. Finding Paradise On An Island

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland flooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Veterans Appreciation Breakfast

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.
