With fingers snapping and passions flaring, the 1950s New York City world of “West Side Story” was brought to vivid life by East Islip High School actors during the course of three successful nights from March 26th to 28th, capturing the story’s visual and emotional drama. Sponsored by the For the Kids Foundation, the musical starred David Cisek as Tony, Danielle Pafundi as Maria, Jon Sawyer Coffin as Riff, Alyssa Stephens as Anita, Peter McDermott as Bernardo, Meg Tohill as Anybodys, Joseph Janover as Doc, Andrew Sciallo as Lt. Schrank, Evan Oldshein as Diesel,

Samantha Sampollo as Consuela, Chris Sumano as Chino and Kendra Canavan as Graziella. Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and involving teen street gangs, cultural tensions and a tragic romance, “West Side Story” was a collaboration between writer Arthur Laurents, composer Leonard Bernstein, lyricist by Stephen Sondheim and choreographer Jerome Robbins. Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

I grabbed a seat on the bench, and looked at the clouds. It was really the first time I’ve appreciated the sky in a while. The sky often serves as the backdrop for my existence, yet I do not acknowledge it. This is the case with many college students, as they are too caught up in the hustle and bustle of life to really understand and not take it for granted. Nature always surrounds us, yet we are oblivious to the subtle changes. It has been really rainy and depressing with regards to weather here lately. I like the fact that campus is warming

The nice, warm weather is the perfect catalyst for some outdoor fun. Sometimes, you just have to put studying on the back burner. Life isn’t all about grades. It is also about spending time with friends, and enjoying the time we have on Earth. I like to think that I live my life in the now. I’m not always planning ahead. In the past, living in the present has paid off. I’ve made many memories with many great friends. Just over this past year, my character has changed. I’ve become a less stressed individual. It’s all thanks to taking a minute out of my day every once in a while, just to enjoy where I am. It is important to take time to smell the roses.

The Islip Arts Council is proud to announce the Seventh Annual Teeny Awards Gala will take place on Sunday, June 7th, at the Noel S. Ruiz Theater at CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. The Teeny awards is a theater recognition program honoring the Town of Islip School Districts high school theater programs and theater student. The Teeny Awards program is a career path to success in childrens’ lives and careers. It provides them with the recognition for their hard work in the Arts and a chance to celebrate a program that looms very large in their high school experience.

He met with the vice president of Pepsico’s Dubai Refreshments Corporation, and with executive leaders from the Boston Consulting Group, one of the largest consulting companies in the world, with the possibility of being considered for a summer internship at one of these two firms. The EI alumnus serves as a student ambassador at Mercy College, and regularly visits high schools to talk about his experiences. A collegiate DECA member, he started a student business as part of his curriculum and is the user development specialist in charge of expansion. At the age of 18, he already owns vending machine and phone case companies. “ D o m i n i c k ’ s experiences in high school creating a virtual

enterprise business plan has helped him to create a real business plan for his two companies, and he is already showing what it takes to run a successful business,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the Career Academy program’s director. Like many former Career Academy students who have graduated from East Islip, Barbato has maintained a role in the programs, interning as an ambassador for this year’s students in the Business Career Academy. Earning Eagle

Kevin Gerard Donovan, Jr. successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on March 25th, 2014, officially making him the 51st Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. Kevin’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, May 19th, 2015, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip.

Kevin Donovan is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, with Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, Kevin has served the Troop as Assistant Patrol Leader, Librarian, and Den Chief for a Cub Scout Pack. He has also earned the Firem’n Chit and Totin’ Chip awards.

Kevin has had many unique Scouting experiences, including Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for three summer seasons, Washington, D.C. tour, Boston historical trip, and white water rafting in the Adirondack Mountains. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Kevin has actually earned a total of 24 merit badges. The Service Project that Kevin developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the two 6’ x 6’ x 3’ planters at Heckscher State Park, East Islip . Packages & Patriotism Continuing their ongoing program on behalf of troops overseas, patriotic students from East Islip Middle School’s Builders Club gathered at the East Islip Post Office on March 26th to ship a week’s worth of boxes of supplies destined for military personnel serving in Iraq.

After their shipping was complete, the students and club adviser Rena Costello enjoyed a pizza party with local veterans at Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi’s office. “It’s great to see this club growing,” said Cilmi. “I couldn’t be more proud of these students.” Marine Corps veteran

he recently said, “Be prepared! That is the motto of the Boy Scouts of America. I believe that I live this motto every day. Scouting has taught me to be responsible in everything I do and has prepared me to be ready for whatever life throws at me. The words, “Be Prepared” never had more meaning to me than when I was preparing for me Eagle Scout Project. The leadership skills and responsibilities of such a large task at times seemed to be a bit overwhelming, but taking one step at a time, planning and preparing always seem to help me progress. I would like to think that one of the reasons why I am a successful student is because Scouting has taught me the importance of perseverance, hard work, and responsibility.” Kevin went on to say, “Throughout my journey – from Cub Scouts to Eagle, I have gained experience and knowledge and learned

many valuable skills, as well as the importance of teamwork. My experience in Scouting has helped me develop into a mature young adult.” Kevin is currently a freshman student at Suffolk Community College, where he is pursuing a future in the field of technology. Kevin is a 2014 graduate of East Islip High School, where he was on the Honor Roll each semester. He was on the East Islip High School Newspaper staff, “The Insider,” and was a member of the Students against Defensive Decisions. Kevin was very involved with music while in school, including being a member of the East Islip High School Pep Band, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Pit Orchestra for the following productions: Carnival, Bye Bye Birdie, and Man of la Mancha. Kevin participated in the Wind Ensemble

“Music in the Park,” where they earned an award, received a number of NYSSMA Medals across eight years of participation, and competed in SCMEA. Community service has been important to Kevin as he laid wreaths at Calverton National Cemetery, participated in toy drives, and St. Mary’s wash kits. He has also worked on many Eagle Service Projects for Troop 205 members. Kevin is a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip, where he was christened, received his Holy Communion and Confirmation. Kevin is the son of Gaby and Kevin Donovan, Sr. of Great River, and brother to John Donovan, who is in the 9th grade at East Islip High School and a Star Boy Scout in Troop 205 and sister to Emma, who is a Junior at Stonehill College, MA.

Retiree Honored

Larry Gruttemeyer was one of several veterans who were impressed with the students’ drive and patriotism. “I was very proud to be invited to spend some time with these amazing American students,” he said. “Kudos to their families and teachers.”

The Suffolk County Legislature honored longtime county employee Carolyn E. Fahey on her retirement after more than 35 years of service to Suffolk County. She began her career as a Secretary in the County Executive’s Office on January 21st, 1980. She became a County Executive Assistant I, on May 21st, 1984. Then, on October 25, 1993, she transferred to the Department of Economic Development with the title of Assistant Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator. She received the title of Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator on

March 21st, 2003 and has served in that position ever since. Honoring Ms. Fahey at the Suffolk County Legislature’s Economic Development Committee meeting on April 22nd were County Legislators Jay Schneiderman, Kate Browning, Kevin McCaffrey, Robert Trotta and Kara Hahn, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Caroline Fahey, and County Legislators William Lindsay III, Steve Stern and Rob Calarco.

Recognized as the most successful nonprofit Suffolk County school organization, FTK has donated more than $1 million for East Islip’s educational programs since its formation. The

Gala, which is the FTK organization’s premier fundraising event, honored East Islip Middle School Principal Mark Bernard as Educator Advocate of the Year, while brothers James Bruno and Louis Bruno, both funeral directors, were honored as Community Advocates of the Year. All three honorees were honored to be recognized for their sterling contributions to the East Islip school community and the FTK Foundation, and enjoyed an evening of fine dining and celebration. In addition their FTK awards, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi presented each with a special certificate. “We were thrilled to honor Mark, Louis and James, community champions who selflessly contribute to the FTK mission,” said Nancy Goldfader, the foundation’s president.

He also attended a STANYS conference involving Long Island glacial deposits, fossils and climate change. “It is such an honor to be accepted into the Master Teacher program,” said Silvering. “More than 500 STEM teachers have been recognized across New York State, and I feel privileged to be considered a part of this incredible group of educators. Each person contributes a wealth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm. Islip High School senior Robert Sgroi, a senior patrol leader of Boy Scouts of America Troop 151 of Islip, was recognized at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor at a ceremony held on March 28th at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. With proud parents Bob and Yvette Sgroi and sister Rebecca looking on, Islip Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel presented Sgroi with his Eagle Scout certificate, earned through a project where he fundraised and

built 10 bat houses at St. Mark’s, Brookwood Hall and Seatuck. “Mrs. Schnebel’s heartfelt and personal words were touching and inspirational; there was hardly a dry eye in the pews and I know that Robert was thrilled,” said Assistant Scout Master Joseph Himmelman. “It is a rare occasion when a public official addresses a crowd with such true feeling and it was apparent that she has a fondness and bond with her 3,000 Islip

children.” In addition to his work for the Scouts, where he has been a member since 2006, Sgroi serves as the secretary of Islip High School’s jazz band, and also performs with the wind ensemble, marching band and in the New York Jazz Academy. He participates on the school’s crosscountry and golf teams as well as Science Olympiad, and is in the top 20 percent of his Class of 2015.

Islip Middle School’s Michael Silvering was recently named a New York State Master Teacher by the governor’s office, part of a program that began in 2013 to enhance science education and STEM career preparations while recognizing science, technology, engineering and math educators who have demonstrated exceptional skills in mentoring peers and furthering their professional development. Silvering currently teaches eighth-grade general science and honors earth science as well as seventh-grade general science, and mentors students on the Islip Middle School Science Olympiad team. A member of the Science Teachers Association of New York, Silvering

received a bachelor’s degree in geology at Binghamton University, where he researched sedimentology and groundwater remediation, and earned a master’s degree in earth science education at Stony Brook University, with studies focused on Long Island glacial features. His fascination with earth science was sparked as a child while visiting caves, exploring beaches and state parks, and fossil hunting in upstate New York. He strives to share his passion for science with his students, and help them to relate each lesson to real-world applications, a quality which led fellow teacher Ashley Bloch to encourage Silvering to sign up for acceptance as a Master Teacher, a long, tough process requiring numerous tests, interviews, essays and a demo lesson. Silvering has only been a Master Teacher for several months, but has already met and collaborated with other Master Teachers 10 times, and has regularly attended a monthly meeting of all Long Island Master Teachers, where the assembled educators are developing a mini-

Grant Mason Dollmann of Brightwaters has successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review making him one of the younger Scouts to achieve this Honor at age fourteen. Besides achieving the rank of Eagle, Grant has earned ninety one Merit Badges and Order of the Arrow. An avid outdoorsman Grant had camped over thirty four times in his first three years as a Scout. A born Long Islander he has excelled in water related Merit Badges earning Swimming, Life Saving, Small Boat Sailing, Canoeing, White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Motor Boating, Water Sports, and Rowing. He also learned how to paddle board at Camp Keowa. He is looking forward to earning Boy Scout Lifeguard and being certified for Scuba Diving this summer. At Camp Read, Grant was awarded the Golden Arrow, the top award for archery, and the Silver Bullet, the top award for shooting. At Camp Minsi Grant was awarded the Sure Shot Award for shotgun shooting skills. Grant is a junior member of the Old Bethpage Rifle and Pistol Club where he is further honing his Marksman skills. Grant also won the Flag Design Contest at Camp Read. Previously to this, he had won three years running the Bay Shore Fire Department Poster contest. In addition, Grant has won three awards from the Automobile Association of America for designing

and drawing Safety Posters which have been displayed atthe Capital in Albany and on the AAA web site. He was chosen in the top three contestants out of 1600 entrees three years in a row. Grant has also received First place, in his age group, in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest. Eagle Scout Dollmann is a Bay Shore High School Honors Student and has been on Honor Roll and High Honor Roll continuously. Grant has participated and placed in the Bay Shore Middle School Science Fair for three years. Grant is a member ofthe National Junior Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Grant is a trombone player in the Bay Shore High School Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra. He has participated in NYSSMA and had been selected and participated in SCMEA, All County Music Festival while in the Bay Shore Middle School. Grant enjoys running and is a member of the Bay Shore Track Team. A three season athlete and is a member of the Bay Shore Cross Country Team. Grant has received his Horsemanship Merit Badge and has been riding since he was five. He has won many ribbons for his riding skills. Grant also is a Brown Belt in Ninjutsu. One of the hardest Merit Badges Grant has earned is Climbing. ‘Heights have always been a challenge for me. I have now scaled and rappelled down climbing towers at two camps.’ Life Saving, another extremely hard Merit Badge, that Grant has received, is a requirement to becoming a certified Guard. This winter Grant earned Snow Sports by attending Ski Camp at Shawnee Mountain. Grant believes that Merit Badges have exposed
