Recognizing Your Life Cycles year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant
ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

The Islip School District’s teachers, staff and administrators – joined by board of education trustees Paul Austin and Matthew Clareen – flocked to the high school auditorium on March 18 for an exciting Superintendent’s Conference Day interactive assembly with motivational speaker Gary McGuey, author of “The Inspirational Teacher” and “The Mentor: Leadership Trumps Bullying.” McGuey, a former athletic director and educator and one of the most in-demand educational speakers in the nation, provided the attendees with engaging

Gian’s stepfather Mark was who he and BJ got their earlier education in mechanics from, and he was part of the original business plan. For some of us, that person is no longer alive, but they still have power over us because of the way they led their lives based on words like integrity, hard work, love, service and responsibility.”

We all know a grand opening is a planned event that is designed to shine a light on yourself, however, in preparation for his grand opening he took things to a higher level. Gian diverted the much needed attention from himself and shifted it to those in need. It was all about Lighthouse Missions, which is an amazing organization that feeds the homeless and less fortunate people living among us.

Photo courtesy of the Islip School District Since then, Gian has doubled down on his commitment to others by continuing to care for Pastor Jim and the other Lighthouse volunteer’s cars whenever they are in need. He also hosts a continual food, toy and coat drive to help meet the demands of the many who would otherwise go without. I also learned that around last Christmas, a family was supposed to pick up their car from Jaxson’s but was not able to pay at that moment… Gian released the car to them at no charge and told them about the great work Lighthouse Missions was doing. He encouraged them to seek some assistance. The family was very grateful and as soon as their rough patch
came to an end they came back and paid their bill. Now we all know a good deed is not done to be boasted about, but sometimes a nice story helps you truly get to know a person! Gian and BJ both share the desire to dispel the old stereotype of the untrustworthy mechanic or that car repairs always cost a fortune. They do honest work for honest pay. There isn’t anything fancy over at Jaxson’s, just good mechanics doing good work and building relationships along the way. Pastor Scott Kraniak of Centereach Bible Church met Gian early on as he opened up Jaxson’s. Pastor Scott, a huge “car
guy” himself, with a love for all things Jeep, has become a regular customer. He and Gian now consider each other friends. The extent of this new friendship was most evident as Pastor Scott recently officiated Gian’s wedding. Gian and his wife Rachel have a beautiful baby girl named Lucy. The purpose behind these spotlight articles is to learn about the people behind your local businesses (and who doesn’t need to know more about their chosen mechanic?). After all, this is someone you need to trust not only for a fair price, but for quality work ensuring your safety. That being said, Jaxson’s is a good choice.

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite
This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced
Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

Superb Science Fair Winners Young scientists at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School put on their thinking caps to concoct an exciting array of projects for the school’s annual fourth-grade science fair. Charlotte Galli was the
winner for her project “My Dog Ate My Homework.” Jacob Crowell was the runner-up for his work on “Fortnite Brain Rot,” while Kate Habel (“Is Your Dog’s Mouth Cleaner than Yours?” and Juliana Schmidt (“Are Your Hands

Clean?”) earned honorable mention. Galli will represent RCK at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair Competition, held on May 4 at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton.
More than 350 community members participated in the East Islip School District’s second annual STEAM/Robotics Festival, held at the high school on March 27. The exciting evening event, open to all students from kindergartners through seniors, featured diverse science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activities and showcased the district’s current STEAM and robotics programs. Student groups taking part included the high school and middle school STEM Clubs, the high school’s Chess Club, and science fair winners from John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools. Also in attendance were members of the East Islip Chamber of Commerce, representatives from
East Islip Public Library, Solar Dad and Sons, Long Island University, Good Samaritan Hospital and Northwell Health, and numerous vendors and business organizations. “This event was created to show students of all ages that STEAM is where they should begin to start looking for their future careers,” said East Islip Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer, who cocoordinated the festival with teacher Genesis Dawson. “This field is in dire need of workers and schools need to start promoting these programs and educating our students about the importance of STEAM and all the skills that they need to develop and learn in order to be successful in their future endeavors. We are also trying to encourage our students to get their
education and continue to stay on Long Island and raise their families here.”

Basketball Buffs Basketball buffs from fourth and fifth grade classes at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools competed at the school level for the 33rd annual Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored since 1993 by the Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Islip Elks, the Sharp Shooter “Just Say No to Drugs” program offers local students the challenge of scoring as many baskets as possible in one minute, improving their skills in
basketball while providing an alternative to drug abuse. Earning first place for JFK at the school level were fourth graders Olivia Shaw and Lucas Trager, and fifth graders Kiera Bloch and Ian Frey. JFK’s second-place finishers were fourth graders Avery Bowden and Evan Gordon, and fifth graders Chloe Garatina and Jake Nieves. Earning first place for RCK at the school level were fourth graders Kevin Deflippis and Alexis Kneisel, and fifth graders
Iyana Carpenter and Blake Gilchrist. RCK’s other finishers included fourth graders Kayla Penny and Syiel Tunstall and fifth graders Devin Franklin, Brianna Martin and Grace Micali in second place, and fourth graders Brea Oquendo, Carman Ortiz and Liliana Pasha and fifth-grader Jack Connors in third place. Each school’s four firstplace winners moved on to participate in the townwide contest’s final round, held on March 2 at East Islip High School.

student artwork and 150 different projects that represented the United States, Canada and Latin American countries, indigenous people in this region of the world and famous people in history. “Our students engaged in meaningful conversations with parents and friends about the
research they did and the information they gained,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Conversations on the geography, economics, governments and cultural diversity of the regions were heard throughout the gym and cafeteria where the projects were displayed.”
