Throughout the month of March, the English department at East Islip High School, students and their families collected donations for care packages for U.S. Marines serving in Afghanistan, an annual project organized by teacher Dori Hirsch. Students helped Hirsch load up the donations to bring them over to Rena Costello, a home and career skills teacher at East Islip Middle School who facilitates the districtwide program of donations for overseas troops.

“I would sincerely like to thank you for collecting items and sending out care packages to me and my Marines,” wrote 2nd Lt. Patrick J. Burns, an engineer operations officer in Combat Logistics Battalion 7 stationed in Afghanistan. “Everything you sent is extremely appreciated and really helps keep the morale high through these difficult and demanding days. The fact that so many Americans are still sending out packages after all these years truly reinforces how strong a

nation we really are.” Costello also arranged a March 24th visit to the high school from U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. John Jones, a double amputee who was injured in January 2005. On his “road to Eagle,” Ben has served the troop as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Den Chief for the Cub Scouts in Pack 205. Ben is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Ben has also earned the following BSA Awards: Snorkeling BSA and Scuba BSA. Ben has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the National Boy Scout Sea Base – Scuba Live Aboard Adventure in 2013, 10 days of Mountain hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in 2012, the Troop 205 Adirondack Canoe Trek in 2010, and numerous other Troop 205

campouts. Ben has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. The Service Project that Ben conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of a boardwalk on the Greenbelt Trail in Heckscher State Park. As Ben reﬂects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “The Boy Scouts and my upbringing have given me a love for the outdoors and a duty

to protect it. I plan to study wildlife science and resources management in college. I also want to live in an environment where I can continue the activities I have done in the Boy Scouts such as hiking, fishing, and enjoying wildlife.” Ben is a senior at St. Anthony’s High School, where he has been on the Honor Roll all his semesters since his freshman year and received the school’s Citizenship Award in 2010. Ben has been on the St. Anthony’s High School rugby team during his 10th, 11th, and 12th grade as well as the high school rowing team. Upon graduation, Ben will be a college student, studying wildlife science and management. Community service has been important to Ben as he has logged 60.7 hours of community service, including being a Fire Island National Seashore

National Park Volunteer and working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. Ben has also played CYO Basketball, trained in mixed martial arts, been a field maintenance worker at Heckscher State Park in the summers, and been playing guitar for the past six years. Ben is the son of Meg and John Hallowell of Great River brother to Mary, a senior at Harvard University and Emma, a sophomore at Cornell University. Ben’s father, John, is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205.

There are thousands of species of ants all over the world. Ants live in many different climates but are notably active and most abundant in warm temperatures. Chances are, at some point during the spring and summer, you will come in contact with ants in your area. Although many ants are black and red, there are a few species of ants that are light brown and even yellowish in color. Pharaoh ants and thief ants are light-colored ants that are often mistaken for each other. Thief ants build colonies in large numbers close to other ant colonies and then use tunneling to “steal” food. Pharaoh ants are also very small and tend to make well-hidden nests, which allow them to infest a property or home quite quickly. Because both of these types of ants can become pests, you may need to hire a professional exterminator if the ants become a nuisance.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a ﬂeeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable. Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun. A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. Cost is the one thing that may deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders. However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in convenience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it’s important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job. Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. For others, they just want to make their parents proud. Five summers ago, when I applied for my first job, it was out of sheer boredom! I really didn’t need the money. Making my parents proud was a

nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there. In fact, now my brother works there too. As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home. Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken. Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has

afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened. Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends. As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Hopefully, you are too!

Few things grow well in sandy soil on their own. Sand is good for drainage, but it cannot retain enough moisture to be viable for most plants. Therefore a healthy mix of nutrient-rich soil, compost and fertilizer can provide the right start. • Consider sun and heat exposure. Select plants that are hardy in warm-weather, full-sun conditions. America on March 9th. In addition to achieving merit badges and demonstrating leadership and service, in order to receive Eagle Scout ranking, a Scout must participate in an Eagle Scout service project. This project helps further demonstrate leadership skills, while also benefiting the community. Joseph’s project consisted of repairing and installing bird boxes for wood ducks and owls at the Seatuck Environmental Center in Islip. The bird boxes will provide safe habitats and will hopefully

As they read the classic John Knowles novel A Separate Peace, set in 1942-43, sophomores in Greg Kguloian’s English class have labored hard to gather factual information about the World War II era. Taking initiative, students performed self-directed “web-quests,” searching for interesting facts, people and events from the same time period. Acting as museum curators, they then created PowerPoint and museum presentations

to share their factual findings with the class. The next step, according to Kguloian, is to follow these discoveries with a carefully crafted crosscurricular ELA-social studies lesson, inspired by the National Institute of Trial Attorneys unit, in which the students will put Gene Forrester, a character from the novel, on trial. “I have been a teacher at East Islip for nearly 20 years and I am still learning every day,” said Kguloian.

“We all work together and learn and accomplish so much more than we could alone. The students deserve to learn as much and do as much as they can, and they discover that they can enjoy learning more and doing more with what they learn. More than two dozen outstanding band, chorus and orchestra musicians from East Islip Middle School participated in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County Division I Central (for sixthgraders) and All-County Division II West (for seventhand eighth-graders) concerts on March 9th. The SCMEA ensembles, including students from more than 30 other Suffolk middle schools, were directed by acclaimed guest conductors from some of Long Island’s best music programs. East Islip musicians in Division I included Fiona Ashe, Sophia Bates, Kayla Cappe, Giavanna Dushaj, Gracie Edmonds, Gia Geamaux, Peter Gerace, Liam Greene, Kaylee Hoffman, Thomas Locke, Caroline Meehan, Matthew Micalizzi, Justine Rizzo and Toby Zollner. Division II musicians included Jake Acocella, Connor Barnes, Alexandra Bertolini, Sarah Bloom, Anthony Ciadella, John Clyne, James Daley, John Donovan, Lauren Florenz, Victoria Keenan, Madison Lane, Stephanie Millito, Elisa Mingo and Cassidy Triolo. Young Scientists

Three young scientists from East Islip High School – Laura Coffin, Derek Dattero and Jake MacMorris – participated in the annual Protein Modeling Challenge at Stony Brook University on February 28th. In their first time competing, East Islip’s team scored eighth out of 28 schools, scoring above average in all categories. Prior to the contest, the entire science research

class – also including Christopher Cangelosi, Nick Carney, Gabbie Marino, Joe Nickel and Hetal Patel – researched and built a model of the Ras 5p21 protein, which plays a role in cell growth and division. The model was judged by a team of protein scientists at the university. On the day of the competition, hosted by Stony Brook’s Center for Science and

Experiments Shine Close to 100 students extended their knowledge of science topics by participating in Connetquot Elementary School’s annual Science Fair on March 11th. “The many outstanding projects demonstrated the hard work and commitment that the students displayed in conducting and presenting their experiments,” said Principal Deborah Smith. Friends and families viewed the various projects while attending the fair, which was organized by adviser David Lake. Teacher Vivian Reilly also assisted in facilitating the judging. Students were tasked with following strict guidelines, with the most important being

the scientific method. Critical thinking skills were required to select ideas, develop a hypothesis, gather materials, write out the procedures and keep a detailed journal on the findings. This year’s winners, one for each grade, were kindergartner Sophia Chillemi, first-grader Michael Stadelman, second-grader Jake Vassalico, third-grader Daniella Chillemi, fourthgrader Brianna Zinkiewicz and fifth-grader David Dreyer. Runners-up included kindergartner Kiera Zeledon; firstgraders Kelly Nelson and Vanessa Rossa; secondgraders Alessandro Jarvis and Brendan Munno; third-graders Carlie

Edmonds, Angelina Sekela and Anthony Sekela; fourth-graders Michael Baldino and Johnathan Yankus; and fifth-graders John Rizzo and Jonathan Stanzione. The five winners will be continuing on to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary School Science Fair on May 3rd, competing against more than 500 students from more than 100 Suffolk County schools.
