Two of the East Islip School District’s most respected administrators recently added a new title to their resumes, adding “Dr.” in front of their names. Sara Anderson, the district’s director of humanities, and Aileen O’Rourke, the principal of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, were both awarded doctoral degrees this year from St. John’s University. The purpose of O’Rourke’s study,

completed at St. John’s from 2012 through 2015, was to determine factors that influence parents’ decision making regarding refusing to take the New York State Common Core Assessment in Suffolk County. “This journey has been a fulfilling and gratifying experience,” said O’Rourke, who previously had obtained a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education and a master’s in elementary

Anderson’s dissertation explored New York State’s principal evaluation system, offering a qualitative case study of the perceptions of principals and evaluators in one Suffolk County school district. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master of Science from Dowling College, and an educational leadership certification from Stony Brook University. “Many people have accompanied me on this adventure of obtaining my doctorate degree,” said Anderson. “Without the support of these individuals, my journey would have been much more difficult. I am forever grateful to all who have offered professional expertise, guidance and support throughout this challenging endeavor.”

Spring is finally here, The snow is finally clear. We are having fun in the sun, Instead of staying inside and gaining a ton. Spring sports have arrived.

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Displaying mastery and creativity in several artistic disciplines, 10 East Islip High School students were named “Best in Show” at the 2015 Long Island Media Arts Show, held at Five Towns College’s Performing Arts Center in Dix Hills on March 27th. Six of the winners selected for recognition by the judges were students from teacher James Connell’s video production and broadcast television classes, spotlighting the district’s continued emphasis on advanced technology video and film curricula. Taking top prizes in a crowded field of more than 150 submitted videos, East Islip junior Brandon Potter

received Best in Show for his video “Intruders,” a fiveminute short film combining horror and comedy, while seniors Chris Saitta and Al Sedita, junior Cameron Philie, and sophomores Chandler Doty and Giovanni LaRocca won video honors for “Selfie Man,” another horror-comedy based on the idea of an average high school student taking “selfies.” “The students who attended had a great time,” said Connell. “Coming home with two Best in Show awards is quite an honor and a testament to my students’ hard work. I am very proud of all who contributed.” Four of East Islip’s Best in Show winners in the

annual competition – seniors Nick Dahill, Lauren Hesse and Kimberly Moreno, and sophomore Miguel Aballay – were photography and computer graphics students from Erin Jacob’s and Heather Toomey’s classes. “The participants did a wonderful job showcasing their artwork and having conversations and critiques with professional photographers and artists,” said Toomey. “All of the students displayed professionalism, and I am especially proud of the students that received Best in Show for their photographs.”

Savvy Scientists Students participating in the annual science fair at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School demonstrated their knowledge of the scientific method while showing an interest in a wide variety of topics. Tomatoes were grown, cats were tested, meat was submerged in soda and contraptions were assembled for the March 26th competition – all in the name of science. A winner was selected for each grade level, based on evaluations by the teachers of Commack Road. The second-grade winner was

Julianna Lofberg, whose project, “How Much Pop Does Your Popcorn Have?” tested the “popability” of different brands of popcorn. Third-grade winner Tyler Simonetti’s project attempted to identify the best method to remove dirt and germs from hands. Emma Infante, the school’s fourthgrade winner, focused her efforts on identifying the amount of sugar in popular drinks. Fifthgrader Richie Castranova’s project, “Homemade Water Filtration System,” showed how to make dirty water drinkable using different

materials. The four dedicated young scientists will show off their science expertise at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 2nd. “Our Science Fair Committee would like to congratulate all of the students and families who put forth such a concerted effort to show their love of science,” said teacher Ted Dieumegard. “We wish Julianna, Tyler, Emma and Richie the best of luck.”

It’s amazing how all different kinds of people can all be in the same place and get along. College is truly a place where anybody can fit in. On my floor alone, there are kids from Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Sweden and Russia. It seems like these students wouldn’t fit in well with the typical idea of a student from the continental United States. At Villanova, I’ve seen this sort of integration become a reality on many levels. Within the classroom, the dorms and the minds of Villanova’s student body, everyone is equal. There is no disparity between the treatment of different economic groups. Regardless of gender, creed, sexual orientation or any other generalization, there is a niche to be found. This flawless integration can be found on the roster of my Rugby team. We have all types of students. Everyone

- regardless of athletic level, skill, race or geographic birth location - can occupy a role on the pitch. I think my team emphasizes the third virtue of Villanova, “Unitas.” Include everyone. The Golden Rule. It all comes down to treating people like people and being tolerant of differences between them. I like to think that this virtue has been instilled in me. Since arriving on campus, I’ve become much more accepting of other beliefs. This is because I had never been exposed to them before. If we take the time to objectively evaluate a position or an ideal, it becomes clear that everyone is pretty much the same. The differences between a Buddhist and a Catholic become negligent when you’re midway through a rugby match. At that moment, you are simply viewing them as a person.
