They removed the debris on the street, and soon Organics Today Farm will be planting fruit trees along the south side of the street. PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - On March 25th, Legislator Barraga presented Joseph H. Salerno with a proclamation in recognition for obtaining the designation of Eagle Scout. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must exhibit leadership, talent, character and perseverance. Joseph’s project consisted of repairing and installing bird boxes for wood ducks and owls at the Seatuck Environmental Center in Islip. Providing safe habitats and promoting nesting habits designed to attract more ducks to the area.

More than 16,600 photographs were

Moreno and Teuschler’s work will be published in a hardcover book, “Best of College and High School Photography 2014.”

Once again, the poised, ambitious students from East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization Career Academy made waves in the annual Virtual Enterprises International business plan competition, beginning with their successful appearance at this year’s preliminary event at Farmingdale State College.

While displaying their products and services to more than 500 guests, teams from 22 virtual firms made PowerPoint and oral presentations of their business plans and answered questions from a panel of judges consisting of business leaders, lawyers, accountants

and administrators from companies such as Capital One Bank and North Shore-LIJ. “They did a fantastic job explaining their company’s business plan,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer.

“Each student was required to present one area of the VE Connected firm and explain the company’s goals for the year and future financial expectations.”

East Islip’s six-person VE team did so well, they moved on to the next round of the competition, as one of seven firms competing at American Portfolios Financial Services in Hauppauge, the first time in four years of participating that the

school has reached the semifinals.

“This was a joint effort on the part of all the Business Academy teachers, administration and two very special people from the business sector – Capital One Bank Vice President Andrew Corrado and EI graduate and mentor Michael Russo – who volunteered their time to come to the classroom and help our students prepare for the presentation,” explained Malinowitzer. “We are extremely proud of all the Business Career Academy students.”

East Islip High School honored World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st with a “Lots of Socks Day” event. In order to raise awareness and show support for students with Down syndrome who are integrated into the East Islip School District, the school’s career development program encouraged the many participating students and staff to wear brightly colored or funny

socks. The idea behind it was that the socks would provoke questions, providing opportunities for the wearers to inform others about World Down Syndrome Day, which is celebrated annually on March 21st to symbolize the third copy of the 21st chromosome in people with Down syndrome.

“We currently have and have had several students with Down syndrome in the career development

program,” said teacher Sabina Uettwiller, who helped organize the event.

“It is important that we raise awareness and understanding of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.”

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision.

Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted.

Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing.

Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America.

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless.

As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors.

Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience.

Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences.

My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me.

As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one!

With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

Honoring sixth- and seventh-grade students who demonstrated the “Six Pillars of Character” during the 2013-2014 school year, East Islip Middle School held its seventh annual Breakfast of Champions on the morning of March 11th. Each honoree was chosen by a team or department at the middle school.

After greetings from Principal Mark Bernard, the school’s two assistant principals, Christian Seifert and Jason Stanton, presented each honoree with a certificate and lanyard commemorating his or her special achievement. After the

ceremony, the students enjoyed sharing breakfast with their families and the school staff.

Add Color To Kitchen Cabinets Many homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets.

But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money.

Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a

few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets.

Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints.

Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed.

If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial and error.

Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer.

Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique

and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule.

Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware.

When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried.

As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory.

This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting.

Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly

before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry.

Sand the surfaces.

Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them.

Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere.

Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface.

In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spotpriming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining.

After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the

surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting.

Apply primer-sealer.

Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future.

Paint the cabinets.

After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets.

Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes.

When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats.

Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying

the second and final coat of paint.

Reassemble the cabinets.

Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

Tile Options

If there is a custom tile or specific design that you really like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want.

The finished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs.

For example, it’s possible to find a piece of marble or granite that would fit perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.
