Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,
for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Great South Bay Power Squadron is offering the United States Power Squadron America’s Boating Course at two different locations this spring – the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center, 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, beginning on Thursday, April 6th, starting at 7:30 p.m., and at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Avenue in Islip, beginning on Saturday, April 15th at 10 a.m. The classes will be taught by USPS certified instructors – Past District Lieutenant Commander (P/D/Lt/C) Peter Richichi for the East Islip Course
and Educational Officer Lieutenant Commander (Lt/C) James M. Milton for the Islip Course. Completing the course successfully qualifies for New York State boater’s and PWC (jet ski) license and further qualifies as a boating license in all states that have license requirements such as Connecticut, New Jersey and Florida. At the present time, New York State requires all persons 20 years old and younger operating a motorized vessel in State waters to take a boating safety class with classroom instruction on boating and PWC
safety (applicable laws, PFC requirements, VHF use, fueling, weather, docking, anchoring, rules of the road, basic boating knowledge etc.) followed by a written exam. The two courses will meet on the following dates: East Islip – Thursdays, April 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Islip – Saturdays, April 15th and 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. New York State also requires all persons of any age operating a personal water craft (jet ski) to take a safety course. The multiple choice written exam will be
on the second to last course date for each location. The cost for the Course is $50 for the student book and if sharing with a second person – an additional $15 for the second student. The last course date is optional (there is no additional charge), covering navigation and plotting, where we teach basic navigational skills, dead reckoning navigation, chart interpretation, compass course calculation (TVMDC), estimating distance, time and speed and plotting your course correctly on a chart. Standout Artists East Islip High School seniors Skylure Blatz and Alana Fiederlein were chosen for the New York State Art Teachers Association’s 27th annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition. Their work will be displayed in the Legislative Wall in Albany’s Capitol Building from March 27th-29th. The flagship event for Youth Art Month, the Legislative Student Art Exhibition is a showcase for the state’s art programs and NYSATA’s largest public display of student artwork in a government building. This year’s
exhibit is cosponsored by New York State United Teachers. The two students, who will attend a NYSATA reception on March 29 alongside parents, teachers and state legislators, are enrolled in teacher Heather Toomey’s independent study photography course. “I am so proud of Alana and Skylure,” said Toomey. “Both of these wonderful young women have been in my photography class for three years and deserve this honor to exhibit their artwork upstate in Albany.” “I am excited to have my photography presented at
the Legislative Student Art Exhibition,” said Blatz. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without my photography teacher, Mrs. Toomey.” Said Fiederlein, “I am so honored to have been part of this exhibition, and thank everyone who helped support my photography.” Kind Words Kind words do not cost much.
