Everyone loves a good, old-fashioned yard sale. The people of the Islip United Methodist Church, 350 Main Street, Islip, especially love yard sales! For the past ten years, the members of the Methodist Church have held a huge, church-wide garage sale to raise money for their various mission projects.

History Of Kings Park Psychiatric Center

On Sunday, April 14th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will host award-winning photographer and author John Lazzaro who will present a slideshow on the history of Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Combining rare, archival images as well as his own photography, Lazzaro will discuss his work and the

approach to his creative process behind his 2019 book, The Walls Still Talk: A Photographic Journey Through Kings Park Psychiatric Center. The author made dozens of trips to Nissequogue River State Park to photograph the remaining buildings of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center which has been sitting

idle and abandoned since 1996. These images show the result of decades of neglect and decay after deinstitutionalization. The program will be held at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Ave., from 1-3 pm, and is free and open to the public. For more info: www.isliphamlethistory. org, 631-559-2915.

Beautiful Day Brings Record Crowds At The East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade

On Sunday, March 3rd, the weather was springlike, and it was a perfect day for a parade. The John P. Reilly East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade brought record crowds to the streets! The parade kicked off at 2:00 pm from the East Islip Public Library with Grand Marshal Shawn O’Neill, his aides, Ladies Aide Mary

Phalen, and the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band leading the way. The Local Hibernians Inc. would like to thank all of this year’s parade sponsors for their support in funding the parade. The Local Hibernians Inc. would also like to thank the line-up committee, the Suffolk County Police Department, and local

ambulance companies for ensuring the parade ran smoothly and safely. This year’s parade included 9 pipe bands, local fire departments, and various local community groups. We would like to thank them all for marching.

New for this year’s parade was a trolley rented by the Ancient Order of Hibernians so that many of their senior members could participate and experience this beautiful day cruising down Main Street. Thanks so much to all of the folks and families who came out in record numbers to cheer on the marchers and enjoy the beautiful day!

Senator Martinez Joins Effort To Provide Tax Assistance To Preserve Community Journalism And Jobs

Journalists who have been looking for something good to report on may soon be able to turn the lens on themselves as the New York State Senate advances tax credits to local news outlets for the employment of community-oriented news journalists in its One-House budget proposal.

If included in the 2024 New York State budget, the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, sponsored by Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and co-sponsored by Senator Monica R. Martinez, would provide news organizations with a 50% refundable tax credit against the first $50,000 of each newsroom employee’s salary, up to $200,000 per outlet. This benefit would be limited to print and online newspapers and broadcasters with 100 employees or fewer that cover local community news.

Unfortunately, with the contraction of local media over the past decade, these stories are being lost, and in their absence, misunderstanding and mistrust have taken hold. These narratives unite us, and without them, we will continue to drift further apart.”

According to a study issued by the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University, an average of 2.5 local newspapers per week ceased operations in 2023. This has resulted in over half of all U.S. counties now having limited access to reliable local news, and more than 200 counties are considered “news deserts.” In New York

State, that decline has been even more pronounced, with 190 weekly newspapers closing down since 2004 in this, the media capital of the world.

Pew Research Center findings also support this trend, with its reporting stating that the share of U.S. adults following the news closely has been in decline,

resulting in shrinking audiences for several older types of news media, such as local TV stations, most newspapers, and public radio.

Islip Seniors Win At 2024 Clash Of The Classes

This year’s theme was movie studios and students showcased their humor, dance moves and acrobatics to the backdrop

of soundtracks from wellknown movies, in addition to painting 10x10 murals to match their theme. Students and advisers worked tirelessly over the week to represent their grades in this competition, and while all grades did a fantastic job, the seniors were voted the overall winners.

Legislator Flotteron Recognizes America’s Boating Club Of The GSB’s Commander

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay’s Commander James M. Milton, JN, a member since 2007, on being re-elected for the fourth time at the Annual Change of Watch Ceremony at the Ancient Order of Hibernians in East Islip.

States Power Squadrons, promoting safe boating through education, James M. Milton, has been very active in many phases of Squadron work earning 17 merit marks based on dedication and work he has successfully completed. He founded and is the Team Leader of the Squadron Emergency Response Team, whose mission is to provide

on-water emergency support on the Great South Bay and has been Captain and Team Leader since its inception. He is also the Chairman of the National Member Benefits Committee, recently being awarded the Dominic Segrete Award for going above and beyond for District 3.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions will

East Islip HS Students Lead Discussions At Student Forum

East Islip High School junior Anna Franchi and senior Kiley Nolan, accompanied by teacher Kate Boucher, recently attended the Long Island Regional Student Forum, held at Western Suffolk BOCES. The pair were two of 100 students representing 40 Long Island school districts.

The goal of the conference was to offer participating students an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about important issues that impact their schools, their communities and themselves. East Islip’s students were participants last year, so for the 2024 forum, they served as table facilitators and led some of the important discussions of the day. The five topics discussed during the day

– School/Life Balance, Mental Health, Real World Learning, School Environment and Social Issues/Connections – were all student-driven, based on a survey sent out to over 16,000 Long Island students and intended to encourage students to speak about issues that directly affect them and give them the opportunity to have their voices be heard. The information discussed at the forum will be shared with the New York State Education Department and school district administration in across Long Island.

“As a chaperone facilitator, working alongside a student facilitator, it was really surprising to hear the students discuss their concerns about what they were experiencing in their

home districts,” Boucher said. “As a veteran educator, the day proved to be a learning experience for me, as well. I learned so much more about the many issues our students face on a dayto-day basis, from actual students. At our table, which focused on Real World Learning, the students discussed the importance of electives and field trips to better understand the world they will be joining after they graduate from high school, and the skills these experiences provide them, which will be helpful as they pursue their postsecondary endeavors. The students of Long Island had so many insightful and valuable suggestions to help us better prepare them for their futures.”
