Islip High School’s long tradition of excellence and innovation in musical productions continued with Catch Me If You Can, a new stage musical based on the Dreamworks motion picture starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. The school’s production, held March 19th, 21st and 23rd, was the first on Long Island for the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2011. The story of “Catch Me If You Can” derives from the 1980 autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr. who ran away from home as a teenager, in search of the glamorous life and successfully posed as several different highlevel professionals. Clean Living
Since I started college, I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting sick really frequently. Throughout high school, I was never the kind of kid to stay home from school with a cold. Now, it seems like I can’t go a month without getting a sinus infection. I think I can attribute this to the close quarters of dorm living. Additionally, my mom has always micromanaged my health. Now that I’m living on my own, nobody is around to make me wash my hands after class. I’m sure not having her here has impacted my health negatively. I’ve been trying to take steps to ensure I stay healthy, but it’s tough when combined with juggling schoolwork, extracurriculars and sports. With any luck, I can hold off any further illnesses. I want to be in good condition for rugby season! I’ve noticed that I’m not the only one getting sick. Almost
my entire floor has been sick at least once. A few weeks ago, a stomach bug made its way around my hallway. It spread like wildfire, mainly due to the close quarters associated with college dorms. As we move into spring, it should be easier to fend off illness. I’m looking forward to finishing the semester with a great GPA and a clean bill of health. With any luck, I can continue participating in all of the facets of college life that have become part of my daily routine. With no parents here, I get to make my own decisions. Sure, that might mean I get sick once in a while, but I also get to develop fully. By making my own decisions, I’m developing life skills that cannot be found through any other manner. I’m really enjoying my time here at Villanova. Hopefully, I can make my parents proud in the years to come.

Seventh-graders in Hal Kench’s East Islip Middle School technology education classes recently completed their CO2 dragster activities, which involved miniature racing cars propelled by a carbon dioxide cartridge. David Gomez took top honors with his car by hitting the highest speed of 57 mph. “David’s car was lightweight and extremely aerodynamic, two very important properties for a fast car,” said Kench. The CO2 dragster project served numerous STEMrelated educational functions, according to Kench, starting with learning about basic hand tool and machine safety. “Those are things that will come in handy throughout everyone’s lifetime,” he said. Additional concepts and skills that the students learned included scientific concepts like Newton’s laws of motion, forces, friction, inertia, mass and acceleration; technology skills such as technical drawing, CAD, specifications and tolerances; engineering concepts like design, prototyping, analysis, production and improvement; and math elements like measurement, calculation and comparison.

Cards For A Cause Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several
brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign
for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

Making A Green Scene Dancers and bagpipers made a green scene in East Islip on March 16th, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day one day in advance. Timber Point Elementary School hosted a special set of Irishthemed performances in the school’s cafeteria, including a demonstration of Irish step dancing by four students from the district.
Fourth-graders Izzie Lemke and Rhiannon O’Boyle of John F. Kennedy Elementary, fourth-grader Reese Clark of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary and Timber Point secondgrader Abby Lemke performed five dances for the school and taught volunteers how to step dance. The dancing display was followed by a performance

of traditional Irish music on bagpipes and drums by four members of the Suffolk County Police Officers Emerald Society Pipe Band. “The students really enjoyed the performances by the step dancers and the pipe band,” said Timber Point Principal Lisa Belz. “It was nice to be able to expose the students to a piece of the Irish culture.”
In an exciting interdisciplinary journey uniting STEM objectives with the realms of outdoor and nature education, fifth-graders in the Islip School District’s EXCEL program for academically gifted students fieldtested remotely operated underwater vehicles they constructed with naturalist Brett Curlew, completing scientific tasks on March 16th at Pardees Pond adjoining the district’s middle school. The hands-on design and construction of the robotic vehicles, which
began last December under the tutelage of Curlew, an ROV expert affiliated with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Maritime Oceanological Society, required the students to learn the engineering concepts of propulsion, density and buoyancy along with overarching life lessons of creative problem solving and teamwork. The project included the examination of leaf packs the students previously placed in the pond as part of the Open Space Stewardship Program, a BNL initiative designed to

Excel-lent Islip Middle School Science Olympiad students in the district’s academically gifted EXCEL program competed against 33 other teams in the Eastern Long Island Region, earning nine medals and third place overall at the event, held February 28th at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills.
The results qualified the team to compete in the state competition in April in Syracuse. The Islip students had worked hard since the beginning of the school year to prepare for this rigorous competition, which included both studying the complexities of meteorology, topography, entomology, physiology
and epidemiology, among other topics, and building events in which the students were required to construct devices including a wheeled vehicle and a robot. The EXCEL students competed in 17 different Science Olympiad events, winning nine and as well as the team Quiz Bowl challenge.

Hoops In The House East Islip Middle School hosted a Hoops For The House three-onthree charity basketball tournament on March 19th to support the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Planned by the middle school’s student
government and Girls Leaders Club, with teacher and basketball coach Chris Padgur serving as master of ceremonies, the event also served to kick off the school’s March Madness Spirit Week. A total of 91 students on 24 teams participated,
raising $220 in charity funds through dollar entrance fees and snack sales. Each member of the winning Hornets team – Brendan Cox, Matt McHugh, Adonic Nunez and Ryan Spatola – received a $10 iTunes gift card as a prize.

Visit With The Judge Islip’s mock trial team. After regularly attending the team’s practices on Saturday mornings, he facilitated the visit to the court with Judge Brown. While there, the students were able to watch a portion of a civil rights trial and meet with the judge in his chambers. The judge invited the students into his courtroom and listened to an opening statement by Elizabeth Loizides and a closing statement by Joe Teknus. Brown offered helpful advice and feedback to the students on the mock trial problem they will be using in this year’s state tournament. “The visit was a great success and all of the students felt they benefited from the experience,” said Lester.

D’Amato U.S. Courthouse in Central Islip on March 12th, a visit arranged by East Islip mock trial alumnus Kevin Yim. Yim, of East Islip’s Class of 2006, earned his undergraduate degree at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts and his Juris Doctor degree at Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia. He passed the New York State Bar Exam and was hired as a clerk by Gary R. Brown, a federal magistrate judge for the Eastern District of New York.
