Christi Wilbert, an alumna of East Islip High School’s Class of 2014, is currently a college junior attending California State University, Long Beach, working to earn her bachelor’s degree in graphic design while minoring in web technologies and applications. Her immersion in East Islip teacher James Connell’s graphic communications and video production classes led directly to her current success in both college and recent design competitions. “My interest in graphic design and the technology field was sparked by my experiences in Mr. Connell’s classes,” said Wilbert. “Experiencing a broad sample of the many facets of the technology field encouraged me to work on tying together as many aspects of design and technology as possible, and the skills I learned in the graphic communications class are the foundation for the graphic design skill set I currently have. Those courses at East Islip set me up for success in college and beyond.” As part of a brand workshop class, Wilbert was recently invited to work on an internal branding project for Hallmark, providing her with valuable realworld experience. She also participated in Knowbility’s OpenAIR 2016 collegiate web design competition, where she

Three East Islip High School photography students – senior Sarah Hillman and juniors Alexa Benitez and Amanda Seegers – were selected for the 19th annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibit, held at Stony Brook’s Long Island Museum. The three were chosen for their colorful designs pertaining to the theme of the exhibit, which
runs from February 24th through April 16th. This annual student art exhibition, sponsored by Astoria Bank, provides an opportunity for K-12 students to show their artwork in a museum setting. A total of 179 schools participated in this year’s exhibition, many of which were new to the Long Island Museum. “I am so proud of Sarah,
Alexa and Amanda for their hard work and dedication to their photography,” said photography teacher Heather Toomey. “I am happy to see them succeed and be acknowledged for their extraordinary photographic skills.” “I was really grateful to have this opportunity, and excited to see my work
displayed in a museum,” said Hillman, who attended a March 5th reception at the museum. She plans to pursue photography in college this fall. “This was an amazing opportunity,” said Benitez. “This experience is great for my college applications, because I plan to continue photography next year.”

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met
with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,
a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

To assist in the festivities, the Easter bunny was born Kept busy with hiding fancy eggs in pastures of corn. Winter’s roughness will soon come to be left behind. Tulips and crocuses shoot thru earth and please the mind. Even when now and then we still get a damp and cool day It does not change the fact that spring has come our way!
