Seniors Simonetti And Zambrana Recognized By Suffolk Zone

Tyler Simonetti and Hailey Zambrana were recently recognized as winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone awards.

The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annually honors the top male and female physical

education students in each Suffolk County high school graduating class. The criteria include attainment of at least a 3.0 or B overall grade point average, an A or 90 in physical education and health classes, outstanding character in both classroom and school, exceptional leadership in the school environment, and status as a physical

fitness role model for other students.

Simonetti, a member of Islip’s league champion boys golf team, earned AllCounty honors this year, while Zambrana, a member of Islip’s varsity girls lacrosse team, recently signed to play lacrosse this fall at Western Connecticut State University.

Islip Town Launches Online Planning And Development Application Portal

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, members of the Islip Town Board, along with Planning Commissioner Ela Dokonal and IT Director Doug Miller, are pleased to announce the soft launch of the Islip’s new digital Applications Portal. This online tool offers a convenient platform for property owners and authorized parties to access property information, file applications, and check the status of applications from home, the office, or on-the-go.

This soft launch of the new portal currently allows residents to digitally apply for select building permits such as new buildings, additions and alterations, to name a few.

Over the coming months, we will continue adding new online applications to the portal, including

Engineering and Planning Division applications.

“Our goal has always been to improve the way residents, businesses and stakeholders interact and do business with our Town. This online Planning and Development Portal is a necessary leap forward in the modernization of our services, and will revolutionize the way the public applies for and tracks applications,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Participation in the launch is easy. Simply visit https://planning. islipny.gov/ and follow the instructions to create an account. After validating your account, you will have the ability to submit applications, upload documents, and interact with currently available features.

“This is an important

step forward for the Planning and Development Department, enabling residents to access information and submit applications at the click of a button. This system will add transparency and streamline the permitting process. We are thrilled to launch it to the public, and continue to provide new features moving forward,” said Planning and Development Commissioner Ela Dokonal.

The new Portal comes alongside the launch of Islip Town Square, a onestop-shop for the Town of Islip’s most accessed webpages and services. Users can access this hub, which includes the new Online Planning Portal, via www.islipny.gov/townsquare.

Enjoy A No-Bake Dessert This Easter Sunday

Easter eggs in all their pastel glory come to mind when pondering an important holy day on the Christian calendar. Easter eggs are great to hide and fun to find, but when they come in the form of a tasty dessert, celebrations become that much more festive.

“No-Bake Cheesecake Eggs” are a confectionary twist on the chocolate eggs that are popular come Easter. Home chefs can have fun decorating and playing with the flavors of these treats. Try this recipe, courtesy of “Jane’s Patisserie Celebrate!” (Sourcebooks) by Jane Dunn.

No-Bake Cheesecake Eggs

Serves 2

Base

1 medium chocolate Easter egg

35 grams unsalted butter

75 grams digestive biscuits

Filling

200 grams full-fat soft cheese (such as cream cheese or neufchâtel), at room temperature

1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons icing sugar

100 milliliters double cream

25 grams cocoa powder

Decoration

50 grams milk chocolate, melted Easter chocolates Sprinkles

Directions

Base

Carefully split the Easter egg into two halves.

Melt the butter in the microwave in short bursts or in a small pan over a medium heat. In a food processor, blitz the biscuits to a fine crumb, add the melted butter and pulse a few times until the mixture is well combined.

Divide the mixture equally between the two halves of the Easter egg, and very gently press down, without breaking the shell.

Filling

In a large bowl, whisk the cheese, vanilla extract and icing sugar until smooth. Add the double cream and cocoa powder and whisk again until smooth and thickened. Divide the mixture evenly between the two Easter egg halves and smooth over as carefully as possible. Chill in the fridge for an hour or so until set.

Decoration

Drizzle the melted milk chocolate over the two halves and decorate with some Easter chocolates and sprinkles. Editor’s note: Icing sugar also is known as confectioner’s sugar or powdered sugar. In the United States and Canada, “double cream” may not be readily available. Double cream has a higher butterfat content and is primarily sold in the UK. If double cream is not available, try substituting with heavy cream with the highest fat content you can find, but note that the consistency of the finished product may be slightly different.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 13th Legislative Pet Food Drive where muchneeded pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food

for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 8544433.

Suffolk County Community College’s Flecker Gallery Hosts High School Art Exhibition

Suffolk County Community College’s Flecker Gallery is proud to host a High School Art Exhibition featuring the young talent of Suffolk County high school students. The exhibition will take place through April 1, 2024. A reception and award ceremony will take place on March 21 from 5-7 p.m. The awards will be announced at 6 p.m.

There will be awards for best of show, as well as additional awards for best 2D, 3D, and digital art. The following high schools that will be included in the exhibition: Patchogue Medford, Centereach, Mount Sinai, Rocky Point, Newfield, Sayville, Islip, Stony Brook, William Floyd, Sachem North, Sachem East, Comsewogue and Longwood. The art work

will include submissions from students in the ninth through twelfth grade. All Mediums are accepted including painting, photography, collage, and drawing, sculpture, digital art and timebased media. Department Chairs and art teachers from the high schools are asked to work with their students to selecting their strongest work and fill out submission forms.

“This new Website –www.flymacarthur.com – both showcases and promotes our airport to local residents and amplifies the many attributes of our area so we can attract more visitors to Long Island,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Using the latest technology, we are able to target helpful messages to our customers based on their location when they go to our new airport website,” she added.

“We continue to work hard to enhance the customer experience at Long Island MacArthur Airport,” said Airport Commissioner Shelley LaRose-Arken. “This new website is aesthetically pleasing and puts important airport resources right at customers’ fingertips. Since the site is optimized for mobile devices, customers can access it from home on their desktops and tablets, or on

the fly from their mobile phones,” she added.

FlyMacArthur.com provides excellent usability features for Long Island’s most convenient airport, with user-friendly content that will promote increased levels of engagement with its customers. East Islip High School’s high-achieving six winter athletic teams – including boys and girls bowling, boys and girls winter track, gymnastics and wrestling –were recognized at the East Islip Board of Education’s March 7 meeting.

“All of our fall teams persevered and won many

championships, so did our winter teams, and I know we are going to have a big crowd again after our spring season,” Athletic Director Steve Restivo said. “Congratulations to all of our student-athletes, their parents and coaches for all their hard work.”

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations

Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and

2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022.
