Islip student Madelyn Marinelli is proving that a big heart, determination to succeed and the kindness of others is what matters when it comes to being charitable. Since January, the Commack Road Elementary School fifth-grader has been participating in the Entenmann’s Little Bites Brigade and gathering support from CRES, Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School and Islip Middle School. “My goal is to turn trash into cash by collecting as many empty Entenmann’s Little Bites pouches as we can and shipping them to

TerraCycle to raise points,” said Madelyn. According to its website, TerraCycle is a highly awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-torecycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. For each pouch that is recycled, Madelyn receives points, which are then turned into cash. The cash raised is donated to one of two charities designated by Madelyn – Feed America and Charity Water. “If we all help, we can provide so many people in America and around the world with food and clean drinking water,” said Madelyn. In only six weeks, Islip participants have collected 1,053 Little Bites pouches. The pouches have translated into providing 149 people with clean water for one week and 36 meals to Americans facing hunger. The program will run until June.

Momentum: No Signs of Slowing Down

Big Heart For Little Bites

At Momentum at South Bay in East Islip, progress is everything, according to Administrator Frank Dano. “As health-care providers, we have to keep our energy focused on progress, on always moving forward,” said Dano. Momentum is primarily a short-term rehabilitation facility, with particular emphasis placed on cutting-edge rehab technology and protocols. Since the center’s opening, Dano and his team of rehab specialists have sought to create an environment in which residents feel compelled to aim high and set ambitious goals. Momentum’s large, open gymnasium is home to a number of advanced pieces of equipment, designed to accommodate a range of rehabilitative needs.

Keep Islip Clean begins its 25th Anniversary celebration with the springtime litter cleanups, beautification projects, recycling initiatives, fairs, festivals and educational activities that are collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, which is the largest community enhancement event in the nation that takes place annually in April and May. Two Earth Day events in Brentwood and Islip were the extent of involvement in the Great American Cleanup when KIC was founded in 1989 as an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful. Twenty five years later, those two inaugural Earth Day events continue and there are now hundreds of additional projects with several thousand participants. KIC has activities for every interest, from large, organized events to individual litter

cleanups. Whether a volunteer participates in a community-wide litter cleanup or forms their own group to plant a few flowers in a neighborhood spot, the Great American Cleanup makes a significant impact throughout Islip Township. KIC provides litter cleanup supplies, guidance and support services to all volunteers. In addition to hands on projects, KIC uses educational materials to foster volunteerism in young people and teach them the importance of a clean, green community. Volunteers interested in major events can check the Keep Islip Clean website at www.keepislipclean.org and the Facebook page for updates. For help creating an event, scheduling an educational presentation or general information contact KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran at 631.224.2627 or keepislipclean@optonline. net.

“Recently, we have been most excited about the SMART Balance Master,” said Dano. “The results have been astounding.” The SMART Balance Master is Momentum’s newest acquisition. This high-tech machine, which resembles the kind of space-age technology we often see in science fiction movies, assesses a user’s balance control, using an interactive, computerized interface. By providing the user and trainer with visual biofeedback in real time, the SMART Balance Master becomes a particularly useful tool in treatment for a range of motor-impairments. Momentum’s rehabilitation program is made possible by a highly skilled staff, according to Dano. The team of experts is trained to provide quality care and restorative therapy across a huge spectrum of conditions, including joint replacement, sports injuries, post-amputation, post-stroke, and much more. Momentum offers its physical rehab therapy up to 7 days a week. “It’s in the name,” Dano said. “’Momentum’ means you keep going, you can’t be slowed down. That is exactly what we try to embody with our rehab program, and it really shows.”

which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of the military serve to protect the freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The pilot program was a great success and many of our veterans took advantage of the reduced fees. I am in favor of anything we can do to support the veterans who protect our freedom every day.” Suffolk County Parks contains four golf courses which include Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead, Bergen Point Golf Course in Babylon, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River and the West Sayville Golf Course. Each golf course is open from mid-March through December and is staffed by a PGA professional, a driving range, a practice green and a full service restaurant and catering facility. This legislation now moves to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his signature. Suffolk County Veterans can contact the Parks Department at 631.854.4949 or go to Suffolk County Park locations where green keys are sold with proper proof of residency; veterans must submit DD Form 214 (Certificate of release or Discharge from Active Duty) or Suffolk County Veteran Resident ID card issued by Suffolk County Veterans Agency.

Golf Fee Reductions For Veterans

www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

TEAM SUPPORT - In the ongoing districtwide fundraiser, “Warm Your Head While Warming Someone’s Heart,” proceeds of purchases of East Islip hats in school colors are used to assist needy families in the East Islip School District community throughout the school year. The hats are available for purchase through the East Islip Middle School’s Spotlight school store, according to school social worker Alison Johnstone. Among those actively participating in the fundraising effort were members of the East Islip High School boys varsity basketball team, who all purchased hats in support of the endeavor. Don’t Stay Idle Long periods of time spent sitting idly can increase your risk of developing blood clots

in the legs, a potentially fatal condition known as deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). Simple and short

exercises while in route may decrease your chances of developing a serious medical complication.

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make

is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

The center will serve as the command center for rebuildingrelated activities by Long Island long term recovery groups, and will include a kitchen, warehouse, office spaces and meeting rooms. “Over the past year, the American Red Cross has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to helping the most vulnerable on Long Island recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy,” said Gwen O’Shea, president/ CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. “With its latest efforts, the Red Cross is also reaffirming its confidence in the nonprofit sector to harness the power of volunteers to assist storm survivors. The Long Island Long

Timber Point Elementary School fifth-grade viola player Noelle Naccarato has been awarded the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s Usdan

Scholarship to attend the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts this summer. “Noelle was chosen out of many applicants due to her impressive musical background and talent,” said Timber Point’s orchestra director, Jaime DeMaria. “We are all so proud of her as she represents Timber Point and East Islip on her musical journey.” “The entire family is extremely proud of and excited for Noelle,” said her mother, Danielle

Naccarato, who serves as principal at the district’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. “This is a wonderful opportunity and such a great honor.” The Usdan Center, a not-for-profit summer arts camp in Wheatley Heights, is now in its 46th season and enrolls 1,600 students each year, ages 6-18. SERVING ALL OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY EVERY DAY!

Both the high school and middle school kickline teams in East Islip won at the Long Island Kickline Association Championships, held in Uniondale on February 9th. The high school team overcame a very challenging year, and struggled to reach the top. Having placed second and third at previous competitions, the students worked hard each week to improve their technique and change choreography to give the judges exactly what they were looking for. “In all of my years of coaching, this was the

most challenging, but at the same time most rewarding,” said coach Denise Naccarato. “Having to push these girls to work harder and harder and change choreography after every competition made winning the championship the sweetest win ever. Aside from the win, these girls learned a life lesson that I am hoping will stick with them forever – if you want something bad enough and you work hard for it, it will happen.” The middle school team, coached by Christina Inghingolo and Kelsey Krumholz, had a remarkable undefeated

season. “We started in midOctober, which is very late considering other schools start choreography and practices the first week of school, said Inghingolo. “So as coaches, we felt a lot of pressure to get the choreography done and be ready, and I’m sure the girls felt it too. But they pulled it together and did an amazing job. We are really proud of them.” Added Naccarato, “I’m looking forward to having their upcoming ninthgraders on my team next year.” Photo by: East Islip School District

on Long Island. Providing housing for the hundreds of volunteers who are still assisting residents is extremely crucial to the timeliness of repairs. I applaud John Miller, Gwen O’Shea, the American Red Cross, and the Health and Welfare Council for their continued commitment to the recovery efforts of Long Islanders.” Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano said: “I commend the Red Cross for donating the funds necessary for this Disaster Recovery Center. This facility will not only serve as a command center, but will provide vital housing for 150 volunteers as they work to repair hundreds of Superstorm Sandy-damaged homes throughout our communities. I thank the Red Cross and Health & Welfare Council for their commitment to our recovery and repair efforts.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $309 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of December 31, the Red Cross has spent or committed nearly $287 million – nearly 93 percent of the donated funds. The Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to

Term Recovery Group is grateful for their support of the Long Island Disaster Recovery Center, which will be the multiagency command center for voluntary agencies. It will allow more groups to assist homeowners in their recovery.” Last spring, the Health & Welfare Council received a $1 million grant from the Red Cross to distribute through the Long Island Unmet Needs Roundtable. The Roundtable, which brings together a diverse group of philanthropic donors, offers financial assistance to help meet unmet needs for people affected by Sandy. John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said: “This new grant builds on the strong partnership between the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island and the Red Cross and shows our ongoing commitment to help Sandy survivors recover and rebuild. The Disaster Recovery Center will be a great resource.” Local elected officials were also pleased about the collaboration between the Red Cross and the Health and Welfare Council. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said: “The Red Cross has truly served Suffolk County residents prior to and in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. This funding initiative is yet another opportunity where the Red Cross continues to support recovery efforts

East Islip High School wore white on February 28th to recognize Rare Disease Day, an annual event held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases. Rare Disease Day aims to improve treatment access for patients and their families, and ensures that the public is better informed about rare diseases and their impact on peoples’ lives. The event was led by East Islip freshman Kyle Engblom, who has a rare

mobility disorder known as Fatty Acid Hydroxylase Neurodegeneration, or FAHN-FA2H. His friends and other students and staff wore white clothing during the day to show their support. Engblom distributed white ribbons made by teacher Maryann Coughlin’s class, and the school’s student council sponsored special T-shirts featuring Engblom’s name and the Rare Disease Day logo. “Kyle sees Rare Disease Day as an excellent

opportunity to share his story,” said guidance counselor Jessica Pignataro, who helped organize the event. “As Kyle’s guidance counselor and adviser of the student council, I am extremely proud to support him in raising awareness about people living with rare diseases. It was amazing to see how many students and staff members participated.” Photo by: East Islip School District

The school’s alumni have landed starring roles on Broadway and in national touring companies. They also can be found working as technicians for Cirque de Soleil and at Lincoln Center. Masks By: Sarah Bosworth, Lindenhurst

Hey there little girl, Why are you crying On a “sunny” day? Where’s the mask that Should be covering your face? The people dance and sing With their “glee,” And masks in place, While you walk with the people, Revealing what must be Hidden from judging eyes.

Look around you, And see the smiling faces All around you and me. They too, Have despise and troubles, Just like you, But they still manage to Keep their masks on. Their smiles turn to frowns

Hey there little girl, Your sadness is strong But it won’t last forever. The fear and pain Will become numb someday. Allowing you to put a Plaster smile on your face. Your mask Of “happiness” Will fool Everyone around you, And give back what You accidently took From them.

“The Lone Cypress - Pebble Beach, CA” Photo by: Georganne Mangiamele

Then everything will Be almost normal again. And that is why, Little girl, You must wear your mask Every minute of every day.

ISLIP - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MARCH 19, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Hey there little girl, Come sit with me, And I will explain why You must keep the darkness inside. Allow your heart to be Swallowed whole By the troubles you Feel that are your own.

When they see Your little tears run down Your face. They begin to think That you are weak And start to feel pity For you. They begin to look at you as prey.
