Student Spotlight That Old Familiar Feeling In Step

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school on February 24th with centenarian costumes, exercises in counting and a special can campaign. Students and teachers alike dressed as if they were 100 years old, and the students enumerated more than 100 reasons why they
loved their school and created posters that each collected 100 items. Tying in to the math curriculum, the students also counted to 100, utilizing a variety of objects as well as their rectangular 10 frame counting tools. “The day was filled with numeracy lessons on the many different ways to count to 100,” said

five winning poems were chosen and read over the loudspeaker at morning announcements, and all of the entries were printed into a booklet for students to enjoy. “We had a great time creating lots of fun ways for the students to enjoy reading at home, fitting in with our theme,” said PTA representative and PARP co-chair Denise Feldman. “The feedback was great and the kids did an awesome job with everything.” In a special “Principal’s
Challenge,” the students surpassed their goal by collectively reading over 42,000 minutes during the two weeks of PARP. The reward was seeing Principal Lisa Belz spending an entire day dressed as a snowman. “I’m not sure who had more fun, the students or Dr. Belz,” said Feldman. As PARP came to a close in February, the class in each grade with the highest rate of participation was rewarded with an “Ice-PARP” party in the cafeteria.

In the final edition of East Islip High School teacher Greg Kguloian’s Lit.2 Life cross-curriculum lesson program, dubbed “Blue and Gold (Leadership and Legacy),” high schoolers worked in cooperative groups to create a studentcentered learning project for a mock National History Day competition. Finally, the children arrived at the publishing stage, where they readied their stories for an audience and words and pictures were finalized. “Watching the children move through the stages of the writing process was very exciting,” said Dieumegard. “First-graders love telling stories about themselves and the goings-on of their daily lives, and this gave them the perfect opportunity to take a story that was important to them and create a book out

Watery Wisdom Suffolk County Water Authority educational programs coordinator Kathryn Fedun recently visited sixth-grade science classes at Islip Middle School to discuss awareness of local water
aquifers. Her presentation served to inform students about how clean, drinkable water gets to Long Island’s homes, schools and businesses. The SCWA program also discussed
different ways in which water can become polluted, the importance of keeping our water clean and the process of how water is purified at the SCWA.

about their research on a chosen historic leader, an original skit about that leader and how they came to power and what they accomplished with their power, and a lesson which allowed the students to actually “teach” each other about what they learned via their cooperative research. All of the students used appropriate sources of information and included proper citation for verification of the validity of their reports. Among the leaders
selected for research were Mahatma Gandhi, Jackie Robinson, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. The latter’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech was reenacted by one of the students. “I was bursting with pride about how my students approached and executed their mock National History Day project,” said Kguloian. “It reminded me why I come to work every day.”

Fire Marshals Honored The Islip Town Board honored six Islip Town Fire Marshals for their bravery and efficiency at the March 3rd Town Board Meeting. Councilmen Steve Flotteron, John Cochrane, Jr., and Anthony Senft awarded Fire Marshals Michael Ippolito, Reese McGuire, Dan Karl, Garry Mowbray, Jr., Thomas Riedel, and Daniel Petrarca, with Town of Islip Certificates of Recognition,
thanking them for their exceptional efforts. Their outstanding dedication prevented potentially deadly carbon monoxide situations that could have resulted in the loss of lives caused by the harmful effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Councilman Flotteron led the presentation stating, “Our Town Fire Marshals are equipped with individual carbon
monoxide detectors, an initiative that was implemented several months ago and that has proven successful in detecting carbon monoxide levels on a number of calls. Fortunately, because of this essential device and the quick thinking and response from our team, potentially deadly and tragic situations have been avoided and lives have been saved.”

For Lisa Dieumegard’s first-grade class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School, learning the fundamentals of writing proved worthy of a very special celebration, in which their own personal narratives were published in book form and displayed for their proud parents. The students had spent the previous few months working through the writing process in a series of steps. During the first step, one of immersion, the children listened to mentor texts to learn about the decisions that writers make and the crafts that they use. Using the personal narrative components learned from the mentor texts combined with their own stories, the students began to generate ideas for their own writing. These ideas were then sorted through, and each student selected one idea they wanted to develop and

SCALA Show Honorees Artwork by East Islip High School students Kimberly Moreno, Lee Pelling and Rebecca Schreiner was recently chosen by the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association for exhibition at the All County SCALA Scholarship Show, which highlights some of Long Island’s finest young artists. Following installation, the students attended an honorary reception at Old Town Hall in Babylon on February 7th. Moreno, who is taking a photography
class with teacher Heather Toomey, displayed her digital photograph on metallic photo paper. “I am so proud of Kimberly,” said Toomey. “She is a talented photographer and artist who was just accepted into many art colleges and who has exhibited in numerous art shows during her East Islip career.” Pelling, studying electronic illustration under the direction of Erin Jacob, utilized Adobe Illustrator to create a vector self-portrait.
“Lee was so inspired by the vector process, she continued to create multiple portraits of her family members,” said Jacob. Schreiner, a student in Daniel Figliozzi’s drawing class, displayed her surrealist-inspired portrait of Cosette from the theatrical production “Les Miserables.” “Rebecca used her talent and drawing skills to create a beautiful colored pencil portrait that was SCALA SHOW HONOREES - East Islip High School student-artists Lee Pelling, nearly photorealistic,” said Kimberly Moreno and Rebecca Schreiner displayed their work at the All County SCALA Figliozzi.
