It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and
relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!
I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Women’s History
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with the entire Islip Town Board, recently honored four outstanding women in recognition of National
Women’s History Month. These women have made a remarkable difference in the community and Town of Islip. They were each presented with an award at the March 8th Town Board
Meeting. Among those honored were Deborah Kirnon, Kay Porter, Nancy Manfredonia and Barbara Ann Stenberg. LuAnn Palazzo was also recognized as the contributing artist for the celebration. Her artwork will be displayed in the Town Board Room at Islip Town Hall for all to see throughout the month.

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently attended the Town’s 30th Annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. This annual tradition brings together children in fourth and fifth grade from across Islip Town for some friendly competition and to help promote drug and alcohol awareness. The event was made possible through the efforts of the Islip Parks and Recreation Department, Northwell Health, the Islip Elks and the Islip Housing Authority. “Over 8,000 children participated this year in qualifying events at their schools and in the finals,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “For decades, the Sharpshooter Contest has been one of our proudest traditions and has helped inform our kids about the dangers of substance abuse.” “It’s incredible to watch kids from all across our Town come together and celebrate the antidrug message,” said Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen. “I’m sure this event will be just as successful over the next thirty years.” 2016 WINNERS 4th GRADE GIRLS • 1st place Samantha Haber Academy Street Elem. Learning to Wrestle On four dates in February and early March, Islip’s SEPTA held its first series of wrestling clinics for elementary special needs students. Jason Spahn and his fellow coaches from the Islip Youth Wrestling program ran
the clinic, assisted by the Islip High School coaches and the entire high school wrestling team. The participants, who attend grades 2-5 in the district’s Commack Road and Sherwood elementary schools, were able to
learn drills and wrestle “live” with the high school wrestlers and coaches. Bolstered by the success of the clinics, SEPTA and Islip Youth Wrestling look forward to growing the program in the future.
Connetquot Celebrates East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of the school year on February 23rd with a variety of meaningful literacy and mathematics activities, held throughout the school day. Students demonstrated how they would look as
centenarians; counted to 100 by ones, fives and tens; created crowns with 10 ten-frames that equaled 100, and made T-shirts and posters displaying 100 items. All of the building’s second-graders worked on “pizza posters,” cut into 10 slices. The students topped off each slice with 10
different things for a total of 100 items. Paying tribute to the 100 days of learning that have taken place, the celebration came to a close with a sing-along of “100 Days of School,” arranged by music teacher Aaron Ely to the tune of “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad.”

Counting Cans Kindergartners at Islip’s Wing Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school on February 26th by collecting cans of food to benefit Long Island Cares, then counting and lining them up in the school hallway. The cans are saved
and donated during Wing’s March food drive. “Collecting the cans for Long Island Cares has been a tradition at Wing for many years,” said teacher Valerie Cordara. “It is our goal every year to collect at least 100 cans of food by the

Keep Islip Clean’s recent card recycling drive sought to keep as many greeting cards as possible out of a landfill after just one use and the final count shows that the project was a stunning success. Volunteers collected, sorted and removed the backs of an estimated 7,000 cards, preparing the covers for a second life as new cards. This uncommon
recycling project supports St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. The organization’s volunteers refashion donated covers into new cards, which are then sold to support their children’s programs. A significant number of new cards were collected in addition to the used ones, so KIC partnered with the American Legion for a second year to assist with a letter writing campaign for
soldiers. “Unique recycling drives are very popular with KIC volunteers,” said Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “In the past we participated in the NIKE sneaker recycling drive and a used sports equipment collection for our soldiers. Taking this year’s PTA Reflections arts contest theme of “Let Your Imagination Fly” to heart, East Islip Middle School sixth-grader Chiara Mosca wrote her own song, “Chiara’s Dream.” The viola composition was chosen by the Suffolk County PTA to receive an Award of Merit and will advance to the state-level Reflections competition. Earning Eagle Badge
Brian James Fitzmaurice successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on September 23rd, 2015, officially making him the 61st Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Brian’s Eagle Court of Honor will be
held on Saturday, April 2nd, starting at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 111 Nassau Avenue in Islip. Brian Fitzmaurice has been a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Brian served the Troop as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Librarian, Historian, Quartermaster, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Patrol Leader. Brian has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending the 100th BSA Anniversary Jamboree at Ft AP Hill in 2010. In addition, he experienced five summer seasons as a camper at Camp
Wakpominee in Ft. Ann, NY, and attended the following unique Troop 205 campouts to Gettysburg, West Point Military Academy, Annapolis, MD, Boston, MA and white water rafting in the Adirondack Mountains, New York. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, and progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Brian actually earned a total of 33 merit badges. The Service Project that Brian developed
planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was a blood drive and food drive at the Great River Fire House, Great River, NY. All food collected was donated to Saint Peters Church in Islip Terrace, New York. Due to the popularity of Brian’s Eagle Project, it was featured and covered on 1010WINS, WCBS-AM 880 Newsradio, Cablevision’s Channel 12, and Verizon FIOS. As Brian reflects on his Scouting experience, he said, “Scouting has provided me with many lifelong memories and experiences in many different fields. I originally became a Scout looking for new experiences
and adventure. Throughout the past nine years, I have achieved that and more. Since my first day of Boy Scouts, I wanted to become an Eagle Scout. My Eagle Project and achievements have fulfilled all the requirements. I live my life everyday by the Scout Oath and Scout Laws. This is very important and will lead me down the right path in life.” Brian went on to say, “Boy Scouts has provided me with a countless number of memories and lifelong friends.” Brian is a senior at East Islip High School, East Islip, where he is a member of the Business Academy. Sports and music have also been of interest to Brian
as he has been on the Junior Varsity and Varsity Tennis Teams and a member of the East Islip High School Pep and Marching Band. He also is a member of the Chess Club and SADD. Volunteering has been a way of life for Brian as he has worked for EJ Autism and did fundraising events for families in need, in addition to the many Eagle Scout Projects within Troop 205. Brian is planning to be a college student next fall after his spring, 2016 graduation from the East Islip High School. Brian is the son of Lauren and Jim Fitzmaurice, Islip Terrace, and sibling to Meagan and Danielle.
