What Gifts “Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.” - Unknown

volunteers their time and attention to a worthy cause that changes the course of someone’s life; a genuine compliment spoken to someone who needs it at just the right time; the painting or sculpture you create that lands in someone’s home and makes them smile or feel inspired every time they look at it... there are so many things we each do and say that are impacting people around us in ways we cannot fully grasp.

A co-worker of mine whom I like and respect very much, was telling me that she doesn’t know how I manage to write a weekly column, because she does not feel it is within her capacity to do so. I promptly replied to her, “You have the gift of kindness. You are one of the kindest people I have ever known, and that is your special gift.”

She stared at me in stunned silence, as though she had not

have the gift of humor. You always manage to brighten people’s day with a well placed joke or funny story, and your comedic timing is impeccable. You may be gifted in the kitchen, whipping up the most delicious meals that bring people together. I have a dear friend whom I affectionately call, “The Child Whisperer.” Children are always calm and happy in his presence and they just love his energy; animals too.

It’s human nature to continuously tally up our shortcomings, but have you ever taken stock of the gifts that you bring to the world? And when was the last time you really harnessed their power to improve your life and the lives of those around you? You don’t need permission to express your gifts to the world.

The right question could be as simple as, “How can I make someone else’s life better today?”

A “student social media takeover” has brought excitement and new levels of leadership to Islip Middle School. Beginning late last year, students applied to run the school’s social media accounts for the day in order to showcase student voices and better display the student experience for the school community.

Every two weeks, a different student was selected, taking and posting four to six photos each. The students sent the photos and accompanying captions to administrators for posting to Instagram, which is set up to automatically repost to the school’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

“It was different from a regular day of school because we got to take pictures, although it was hard to choose the photos and write the captions,” said sixth-grader Patrick O’Shea.

Not only did the students involved enjoy the experience, the reaction from classmates and teachers was enthusiastic.

“They were all super excited and asking me to put them in a picture,” said seventh-grader Gabriella Dirosse. “They all wanted to participate, which I thought was really cool, that we all could be a part of it together. The students had their voice, the teachers had their voice, and we all had different opinions.”

“For us, it really connects to everything we are trying to do with giving our students a voice and helping them become leaders,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Miltenberg. “If you look at the news, it always seems to be negative in terms of kids and social media, and we wanted to flip that narrative and show that social media can be used for positive. Grandma's Mandel Bread

Lisa F. of Oyster Bay, along with her extended family, are forever tweaking her grandmother's chocolate chip and cherry mandel bread to get just the right measurements of each ingredient.

"It's been an ongoing labor of love," says Lisa.

"My Grandma Bernice, along with my great grandmother and a cousin worked together to concoct this recipe.

They were constantly adding a pinch of this or changing a cup of that. My family and I feel we finally got it perfect, so it's nice to share," she says.

What You Will Need 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 tsps baking powder 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 tbsp vanilla extract 4 cups sifted flour 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) 3/4 cup chocolate chips

Rhythm of the Words

1/2 cup candied cherries (cut in half) cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle on top Preparation Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together (mix well). Form into three loaves on a large baking sheet. Use parchment paper to keep the loaves from sticking, or you can use a cooking spray. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown. When still warm, cut loaves into strips, on an angle. Let cool.

Grant Wilfley Casting is specifically seeking people who have a 1950s period look to portray U.S. soldiers.

LEGALS 1. Identification and number of poll watchers.

4. Final vote tally.

Following the recording of the vote by the District Clerk and inspectors of election, poll watchers will be permitted time to view the voting machines prior to the custodian from the Suffolk County Board of Elections locking the machines.

Poll watchers are not permitted behind the machines while the tally is being taken by the District Clerk and inspectors.

5. Miscellaneous.

Any questions regarding poll watchers are to be directed to the District Clerk, Marie Rogers. All actions of poll watchers shall be unobtrusive and may in no manner interfere with the ordinary conduct of the voting.

“Step Into Christmas” Benefit by local dancers raised $5,000 to help families of children with congenital heart defects.

This past December the Dance Connection Performance Team and Dance Connection Theatrical Productions held a benefit performance at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale to raise money for Gavin’s Got Heart - a local charity assisting families of infants and children diagnosed with congenital heart defects. The original production raised $5,000 for the charity, which was used to provide 24 hour in-home nursing care for a family that allowed them to bring their baby home from the hospital.
