The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

years old and became Pipe Major of the Roisin Dubh Irish Pipe Band in 1995 and still continues in this role today. He also served as the Grand Marshal of the East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 6th.

Ms. Knockenhauer is the daughter of first generation Irish parents and a devote member of the LAOH. In In 1984, she began volunteering at St. Mary’s Church as both a catechist and a member of the Outreach Team. She retired in 2002 from Connetquot School District and spent the next 16 years volunteering at the Fire Island Lighthouse as a

docent for school groups.

In 2005, she went back to school, earning a BA in Children’s Literature and was a published author in Chicken Soup for the Soul, Living Catholic Faith, South Shore Monthly and Good Old Days Magazine. She also was an extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and a member of the Consolation Ministry at St. Mary’s Church for 18 years. She has served on the Board as Sentinel, Mistress-atArms, Irish Historian, and Financial Secretary as well as Spiritual Advisor to LAOH. 394865N030922

BUSINESSES THRIVE WHEN OUR COMMUNITIES THRIVE Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019.

The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. Club Meets Virtually With Service Members At a recent Islip Middle School CARE Club meeting, the many positives that kindness and caring bring became clear when the club’s

members linked virtually to meet and converse with several American service members.

The connection began when middle school cheer

coach Suzanne Lange made the CARE Club aware that her family sends care packages to her son, and Islip alumnus, Lt. Nicholas Lange of the U.S. Army.

The students jumped at the chance to let the troops know how much they are valued and asked to send care packages as well.

Club members then created handmade cards of thanks and holiday cheer, crafted sparkly wooden snowflakes, packaged homemade chocolate treats, and collected donations of books,

magazines, crossword puzzles, coloring books, candy, and snacks from middle school faculty.

In February, the CARE Club members met with the service members faceto face for a 40-minute virtual conversation. The students learned that there is an eight-hour time difference between New York and Iraq. The soldiers

shared they are stationed somewhere between the Tigris and Euphrates River.

Their base is shared with many other international troops, so they enjoy international foods regularly. The students also learned that the troops have very little downtime and are always on call.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port

Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.
