Make Your Vehicle Less Vulnerable to Theft

Vehicle theft is something few people imagine happening to them. Until it does. While many motorists may think technology has done wonders to curb vehicle theft, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that a motor vehicle is stolen every 46 seconds in the United States. Auto theft is sometimes mistaken as a victimless crime. After all, insured motorists are typically reimbursed for stolen vehicles, and drivers whose cars are returned after being

stolen can simply submit a claim to have any damages paid for by their insurers. But this characterization of auto theft is untrue, as all motorists, whether their car’s been stolen or not, pay for auto theft. The Insurance Bureau of Canada notes that each year auto theft costs Canadians roughly $1 billion. That figure includes the $542 million insurers pay to fix or replace stolen vehicles each year. Those costs are ultimately passed on to customers, who then indirectly pay for the actions of car thieves. Curbing auto theft is not necessarily the job of drivers, but there are things motorists can do

to reduce the likelihood that their car will be stolen by opportunistic thieves: Avoid keyless ignition systems. Drivers who live in areas that are vulnerable to auto theft may want the peace of mind that comes with traditional keyed ignition systems instead of the more modern and flashy keyless ignition systems. While vehicles with keyed ignition systems are stolen every day, some thieves may find it easier and quicker to steal cars or trucks with keyless ignition systems. Thieves can copy keys used in traditional ignition systems, but that process may require access to the original key and tends to take longer than it takes for thieves to reprogram keyless ignition systems once they’re inside a car. Reprogramming devices are not legal, but they are available and can be used to shut off automobile alarm systems in a

matter of seconds. Lock your vehicle at all times. One of the simplest ways to protect a vehicle from prospective thieves is to always lock the windows and doors, even when you’re inside the vehicle. Auto thieves like things to go quickly and smoothly, and locked doors and rolled up windows only complicate things for thieves. Get in the habit of locking the vehicle when you’re driving, as unlocked doors make it easier for carjackers to surprise unsuspecting motorists. Park smart. Some motorists like to park far away so their vehicles are not at risk of being dinged or scratched by inattentive drivers and passengers getting into and out of nearby vehicles. Others may simply not have the patience to find parking spots in well-lit areas close to home or storefronts. But thieves may target vehicles parked nowhere

near foot or automobile traffic. Always park in parking garages or other well-lit areas, which deter thieves from breaking in and driving away with your vehicle. Etch the VIN onto your windows. Car thieves are not in the auto theft business so they can build a fleet of stolen cars. Upon stealing a car, many car thieves head right for a chop shop, which is a place where stolen cars are disassembled and then sold for parts. By etching the VIN, or vehicle identification number, of your car or truck on your vehicle’s windshield or windows, you may be making your car less attractive to prospective thieves and the chop shops they do business with. Vehicle theft remains a problem even as technology has done much to prevent it. But drivers can take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized by car thieves.

Safely Share the Road

Motorists, motorcycle riders, cyclists, and pedestrians converge on roadways across the globe every day. While many travelers respect their fellow road warriors, the potential for highway accidents is great. Taking measures to share the road safely can greatly reduce all travelers’ risk of being involved in a traffic accident.

Cars should keep their daytime running lights on and use headlights in inclement weather. Rain, fog and snow can impair visual conditions for all travelers, so exercise extreme caution when traveling in adverse conditions. Use safety equipment. Bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets and other protective gear can save lives. Everyone should wear a properly fitted helmet. Motorists and their passengers should always wear their safety belts. Obey the rules of the road. Whether on foot, on a bicycle, on a motorcycle or in a car, the rules of the road remain the same. Heed

traffic signals, yield to others when applicable and maintain proper speeds. Also, remember to use turn signals when turning and/or changing lanes. Be aware of road conditions. The NHTSA says that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcycle riders and cyclists. Riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions, such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings and grooved pavement. Drivers should anticipate such adjustments. Working in concert, everyone can improve safety for those sharing the road.

The Press Club of Long Island will host a panel discussion, “Why a Community Newspaper Is a Great Place to Start - and Make - a Career in Journalism,” on Wednesday, March 15th, at 6:30 p.m. The free program will take place at Herald Community Newspapers, 2 Endo Blvd., Garden City. He purchased two newspapers - the Bayside Times and Little Neck Ledger - in 1989 and

expanded the group to 16 papers. He sold it to News Corporation in 2006. • Scott Brinton, a PCLI Hall of Famer and board member, and executive editor of Herald Community Newspapers, which publishes 18 awardwinning weekly papers in Nassau County. He is also an adjunct journalism professor at Hofstra University and formerly a freelance feature writer for Newsday and photographer for The New York Times. • Carolyn James, a PCLI Hall of Famer, past president of the organization, and editor and publisher of three

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

The Islip School District recently sent a team to the Teach to Lead Conference, held in January at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Brookville. The purpose of the conference was to provide the opportunity for teams of educators from various districts to create and implement a district initiative for the purpose of school improvement. Many high profile educators, including Regent Roger Tilles and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia, were in attendance to address the attendees and offer their support and expertise. Islip’s team of Teacher Leaders consisted of four teachers and one administrator, each representing a different school in the district: Islip High School Principal Michael Mosca and teachers Jean Minicozzi from Islip Middle School, Ted Dieumegard

from Commack Road Elementary School, Rich Velazquez from Maude S. Sherwood Elementary School and Laurie Wills from Wing Elementary School. They selected the districtwide implementation of instructional rounds as their initiative. The purpose of IR is to promote the sharing of best practices between educators by allowing teachers to actually see instruction in other classrooms. “Although we are often hesitant to leave our classes and our students, the benefits of seeing a variety of teaching styles, and more importantly, engage in quality educational conversations with an assortment of colleagues, is extremely valuable for our growth and development as educators,” said Mosca. “Additionally, we have the benefit of seeing some of our own students work in a different discipline. This

can provide a teacher with a more in-depth perception of a student’s strengths and weaknesses.” The practice of instructional rounds is not a new educational idea or initiative, according to Mosca. “There have been many studies and publications about its effectiveness,” he said. “The beauty of instructional rounds is that there is no one way to run them. The practice could and should be created to fit the needs of the school or district. I have been utilizing IR at Islip High School for the last three years, and prior to coming here, at my previous school, Comsewogue High School. It is something I am very passionate about and I am happy we have assembled a team of quality educators from each of our buildings to explore the possibility of expanding the practice here in Islip.”

East Islip High School senior Michael Stevens was selected to be one of 20 Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar–Artists for 20162017, a prestigious honor that annually recognizes top Long Island seniors who have demonstrated a successful school career in both the arts and academics The LIAA’s ScholarArtist Awards program, presented by the New York Community Bank Foundation in cooperation with Newsday, partners with local universities to offer full scholarships to qualified honorees. On September 8th, Stevens attended a reception at Half Hollow Hills High School East, introducing the 2016-2017 class of Scholar-Artists were introduced and honored. He was featured as a Scholar-Artist in Newsday during December, and this spring, he will participate in a special presentation of all the Scholar-Artists at the Tilles

Center for the Performing Arts. Stevens has spent every Saturday for the past seven years in both the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School Pre-College programs, studying with members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In May of 2016, his Juilliard chamber group Noname won an international chamber competition against more than 100 other ensembles from 13 different countries. Additionally, Stevens and East Islip classmate Kevin Jacobsen spend Sundays as the two youngest brass section members of the nation’s premier youth orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony. Since fifth grade, Stevens has spent his summers participating in rigorous music programs such as Tanglewood and the New York State School of Orchestral Studies. Most recently, he toured China and Europe with the Carnegie Hall National

Youth Orchestra of the USA. With the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, he visited Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria and Poland; in the latter, he performed a memorial concert on the grounds of the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. As a sixth- and eighthgrader, Stevens was the winner of the Northeast Horn Workshop High School Competition and runner-up in both the Juilliard and MSM concerto competitions. He has been a NYSSMA level 6 pianist since third grade and level 6 horn player since fourth grade, with an average score of 99.7, earning him All-State honors on both instruments. Academically, Stevens has been enrolled in honors and AP classes throughout his secondary years and has been able to maintain a GPA above 102. Throughout his musical and academic years, he has played both club and school soccer, most recently with the East Islip boys varsity soccer team. “I am so incredibly grateful for the hard work and support from my music teachers in the school district,” said Stevens. “From elementary school onward, they inspire hundreds of students every day.” Stevens is applying to music conservatories nationwide where he hopes to pursue a career as an orchestral horn player. Prestigious Grant Awarded Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to preserve documents that are a vital part of Long Island’s history. The Palmer School is a recognized leader in library science and one of just 62 schools accredited by the American Library Association. It also offers the only Ph.D. program in Information Studies in the New York metropolitan area and is the only library sciences school in that area to be admitted into membership in the prestigious iSchools Consortium. “Long Island University is proud to partner our nationally recognized Palmer School with the resources of the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation to help preserve Long Island’s history,” said LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline. With the Gardiner Foundation’s grant, LIU will digitize and preserve a collection of historical

documents currently held by historical societies across Long Island, with a particular emphasis on Suffolk County. LIU will showcase these documents at an annual Gardiner Symposium, while promoting year-round visibility of these historical societies. The project will be led by Dr. Gregory Hunter, Professor of Library and Information Science who heads the doctoral program at the Palmer School. Dr. Hunter is a nationally recognized expert who was a key member of the team that designed and implemented the Electronic Records Archives for the National Archives and Records Administration. Dr. Hunter is Editor of The American Archivist, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of American Archivists. “The Palmer School has been educating archivists and supporting the local historical community for three decades,” said Dr. Hunter. “The generous grant from the Gardiner

Foundation will help preserve Long Island’s history and also ensure that the next generation of archival professionals has the skills to preserve history in the digital age.” The grant includes significant scholarship support for masters and Ph.D. students at the Palmer School, in addition to opportunities for longterm fieldwork placement that benefit both the historical societies and Palmer School students. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation’s mission is to promote our regional history. The artifacts and archives of historical societies are untapped treasure troves for researchers and scholars. It is our hope that this award will make these collections available as vital part of local historic study. The Palmer School program and students offer the expertise and resources to accomplish this goal,” said Kathryn M. Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.
