Night of Champions As part of a special Night of Champions, the Islip School District recognized several athletic achievements during the January 10th board of education meeting.

Among those honored

were students on the Islip High School girls tennis, gymnastics and boys golf teams. The varsity girls tennis team were League III and Division II champions this past fall season. The gymnastics squad – a joint

team with Bay Shore – won the county championship, and the boys golf team qualified for the county championship for the first time in five years.

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless.

Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house.

I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard.

So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well.

I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up.

It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant.

I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document.

In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www.

Talents Showcased For four nights in January, the Theater Arts class at Islip High School’s theater arts class brought beloved storybook characters to life in a very non-traditional way in their production of “Into the Woods.” This memorable Broadway play, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, served as a remarkable showcase for the students’ vocal talents.

During the course of the story, a baker and his

wife, played by Emma Regina and John DelGenio, had to reverse a curse brought upon them by a wicked witch, played

by Alexandra Morrissey and Nicole Poliandro.

Cinderella (played by Morgiana McDevitt) garnered sympathy from the audience, while Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack and his mom, the royal princes, Cinderella’s family, Snow White, the Narrator, Sleeping Beauty, the wolves and Jack’s cow

Milky White brought the message “no one is alone” to fruition.

“The audience was in awe of the talent on stage and behind the curtain, knowing that this production was a result of the students’ work as part of a class assignment,” said Superintendent Susan Schnebel, who attended the performance. “As I sat in my seat, I could not help but marvel at the talent, dedication and passion the cast and crew displayed.”

Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year.

These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on

how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim.

East Islip High School seniors Jackie Carty, Rachel Florenz, Victoria Robbins and Rebecca Schreiner signed National Letters of Intent on February 1st to play college soccer this fall.

Carty, a goalkeeper, will attend Molloy College in Rockville Centre. She earned All-State, AllCounty and All-Long Island honors during her time at East Islip, and was named 2016 Goalie of the Year. A three-sport athlete, she also played for the varsity basketball and softball squads. She will major in nursing.

“Molloy was my choice due to its strong nursing program and great coaching staff,” said Carty.

Florenz, a forward and midfielder, will attend Stony Brook University.

and a Newsday Athlete of the Week, she was named All-County in her junior and senior years. She also played club soccer for the Brentwood Youth SC. She plans to major in biology as a step toward a career in nursing.

“I picked Stony Brook for the academic programs they had to offer me,” said Florenz.

Robbins will attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. A goalie, she played club soccer for HBC Impact and served as captain of East Islip’s varsity gymnastics team.

She plans to major in biological sciences.

“I liked the positive atmosphere and beautiful campus, and the team felt like family,” said Robbins regarding her choice of

USC. Schreiner, a forward, will attend Lafayette University in Easton, Pennsylvania.

She played soccer for the HBC Impact club team, where she served as captain.

As a member of East Islip’s varsity tennis team for four years and its captain for two, Schreiner earned All-County, All-League and All-Division honors as well as two MVP awards and the Suffolk County Girls Tennis Association Sportsmanship Award She also played on East Islip’s varsity basketball team.

She plans to major in engineering.

“Lafayette is a very good academic as well as athletic school,” said Schreiner. “I will get a good education while playing high-level soccer.”

“Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is the Girl Scouts’ big push to remind their communities that Girl Scout Cookies® are for sale but for a limited time,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

This is a crucial time for our girls to get out and, not only encourage neighbors, friends and family to purchase cookies to support their sales goals but gain the valuable hands-on entrepreneurial skills they will carry with them for years to come.”

Community members may also purchase cookies from Girl Scouts in Nassau County to be donated to our military heroes. Over the past 13 years, Girl Scouts of Nassau County have shipped almost 700,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies® to its servicemen and women in Iraq, Afghanistan, and throughout the world, thanks to their delivery partner, DHL Express.

Cookies have also been delivered to the local Marine Base in Garden City, the Coast Guard station at Jones Beach, and other New York military institutions.
