The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like

humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!

Pair Of East Islip Photographers Chosen For Colors Of LI East Islip High School photography students Samantha Koslow and Clarinda Vilardi were selected for the 22nd annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibition, sponsored by Sterling National Bank and held at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Their work will be on view from Feb. 21
through March 22, and both students were invited to attend an opening reception on March 8. “It was awesome to be chosen to have my photography exhibited in a professional museum,” said Koslow. “I am so proud of Clarinda and Samantha,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “These are two
very talented and dedicated photography students. Their hard work and talents are paying off and now they get to exhibit their work in a professional gallery. I give my warmest congratulations to both of them and thank the Long Island Museum for this amazing opportunity.”

East Islip High School senior Emily Porti signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 30 to continue her track and crosscountry career at Molloy College this coming fall. She plans to major in nursing. During her years in East Islip, Porti earned All-County, AllLeague, All-Division and AllAmerican recognition as well as the High Minds in Motion award. She chose Molloy for its excellent nursing and athletics programs.

Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since 2018, that number is down to 5%. “Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a pastdue bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations, PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate payment and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include pre-paid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to
nonpayment, they will receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.” What to look out for You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID. The caller threatens to shut off your service and demands an immediate payment by pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. The caller informs you that you require a new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur. You’re given a phone number to call back that, when called, may sound similar to PSEG Long Island’s automated call system. PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask for them because they are untraceable. What to do Hang up. Do not provide any personal or account information. Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. Never call any number the scammer gives you. What PSEG Long Island will and won’t discuss over the phone A genuine PSEG Long Island representative will ask to speak to the Customer of Record. If that person is available, the representative will explain why they are calling and provide the account name, address and current balance. If the Customer of Record is not available, the PSEG Long Island representative will not discuss the account at all and ask that a message
be left for the Customer of Record to call 1-800490-0025. PSEG Long Island also cautions customers to beware of scam emails that appear to be bills from the utility. These emails request personal information that could lead to identity theft. PSEG Long Island does not ask customers to provide personal information online without first logging into the My Account section of www.psegliny. com. Never provide any personal information requested by email. Do not download any attachments, and do not click on any links in the email. Instead, open a browser window, visit www.psegliny. com and log into My Account to get accurate account information, or call PSEG Long Island customer service. Any customer who has doubts about the legitimacy of a call or email — especially one in which payment is requested — should call the PSEG Long Island directly at 1-800-4900025 or visit a PSEG Long Island Customer Service Center. Town Celebrates Black History Month With Recognition Ceremony Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, celebrated Black History Month at the February Town Board meeting, by recognizing residents who contribute to their community through volunteerism or their professions. Town officials honored Suffolk County Police Officer, Brandon Bell of the
3rd Precinct in Bay Shore. Officer Bell joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 2006, and has been with the 3rd precinct ever since. He has served on patrol in the department’s Community Support Unit and is currently an investigator in the precinct’s Crime Section. Officer Bell is a quiet
professional, who has earned the respect of both his colleagues and his supervisors. “He is a dedicated employee who has made many contributions to his community, and who is worthy of recognition by the Town,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
