College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy are eligible for the $1,000 scholarship.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

National Grid Foundation Gifts United Way Of Long Island $250,000 In Support Of Project Warmth And Safe At Home For Seniors United Way has responded to the needs of Long Islanders who have been greatly affected by the economic and health pandemic. Recognizing the impact the nonprofit has been making in the region, National Grid Foundation recently made a generous contribution of $250,000 in support of Project Warmth and Safe at Home for Seniors. Both United Way programs are critical to helping neighbors who are experiencing financial difficulties and/or isolation due to job losses, mandates, and limited resources.

According to the 2020 ALICE Report*, more than 30% of local residents are struggling to make ends meet despite working one, two or even three jobs. Ed White, Executive Director of National Grid Foundation noted, “This year has been especially difficult, as we are witnessing families asking for help for the first time. It’s comforting to know Project Warmth is available to Long Islanders, helping to provide the stability needed to overcome temporary economic challenges.”

As Long Island’s only islandwide non-governmental emergency heating fund, United Way’s Project Warmth is open and available as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity. This fuel-neutral program is especially critical for those who do not qualify for government programs, including seniors, veterans, families with young children and people with disabilities.

Assistance with an oil delivery, heatrelated utility bill or other heating source, means people have room in their budgets to cover essentials like food or medication.

Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island claimed, “We could not be more honored to be partnering with such a stellar philanthropic organization.” She stated, “National Grid Foundation’s commitment to United Way’s mission is evident through their longstanding support for Project Warmth. Now it is even more apparent through their action in support of addressing serious challenges facing our region’s most vulnerable population...seniors.”

They act as helping hands managing everyday tasks such as grocery shopping and picking up prescriptions; making sure their homes have proper safety measures such as grab rails and working smoke detectors; and providing communication assistance - from connecting seniors with family members to scheduling their healthcare appointments, including registering for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets.

“The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break.

The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.”

The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves.

Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs.

Long Island Dahlia Society Monthly Meeting The Long Island Dahlia Society will host its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 17th, 2022 at 6:30 PM at Championship Cat Shows and more.

NFPA Urges Added Caution When Using Home Heating Equipment, The SecondLeading Cause Of U.S. Home Fires The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is urging the public to use added caution when heating their homes during the winter months, when nearly half (48 percent) of all U.S. home heating equipment fires occur.

Home heating equipment is the second-leading cause of U.S. home fires and home fire injuries, and the thirdleading cause of home fire deaths and direct property damage.

According to the latest U.S. Home Structure Fires report from NFPA, an average of 45,800 home heating fires occurred each year between 2015 and 2019: resulting in an estimated 480 civilian deaths, 1,350 civilian injuries, and $1 billion in direct property damage.

“During the coldest months of the year, home heating equipment kicks into high gear,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “Understanding when and where home heating fires happen is critical, so that they people can take the steps to minimize associated risks and safely heat their homes.”

Space heaters are most often responsible for home heating equipment fires, accounting for more than two in five fires, as well as the vast majority of associated deaths (81 percent) and injuries (80 percent).

“Space heaters can be effective tools for heating smaller areas, but they need to be used with caution and care,” said Carli, pointing to the tragic fire that occurred earlier this month in Bronx, N.Y., which reportedly began with a malfunctioning space heater and resulted in 17 fatalities.

A failure to clean equipment was the leading cause of home heating equipment fires. Fires in which a heat source was too close to combustible materials caused the largest shares of civilian deaths, injuries, and direct property damage. Half of home heating fire deaths were caused by placing equipment too close to things that can burn.

NFPA offers these tips and guidelines for safely heating your home during the winter months: Heating equipment and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

Keep anything that can burn at least three feet (one meter) away from all heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters.

Always use the right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer, for fuelburning space heaters.

Create a three-foot (one meter) “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

Make sure space heaters are in good working order and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Fireplaces should have a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.

Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container, which should be placed outside at least 10 feet away from your home.

All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company.

Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are located throughout the home; test them monthly to ensure that they’re working properly.

NFPA offers a wealth of home heating safety tips, information, and resources to help better educate the public about ways to safely heat their homes.

In addition, NFPA’s “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign with the U.S. Fire Administration works to promote a host of winter safety issues, including home heating.
