Wrestlers Take Four East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team hosted the 30th annual Rocky Gilmore Classic wrestling tournament on January 7th, walking away with four place winners.

Senior Ethan Addeo (165) placed second overall at 152 pounds. Addeo, who has a team leading 11 pins on the season, pinned his first three opponents, including a pin over third

seed Jose Dejesus of Central Islip in the semifinals. In the finals, he lost a tough match to Malcolm Bunce of Central Islip, 12-3.

Junior Rob Condon (106) pinned his first two opponents, including a pin in in the 285-pound semifinals over top seed Brian Plietez of Brentwood.

In the finals, Condon lost 2-1 in double overtime to Bob Christ of Mount Sinai.

Other place winners for the Redmen were junior Nick Picece (15-5) who wrestled at 120 pounds and finished in third place overall, and senior Kai Brothers (7-5), who wrestled in the 220-pound division and came in a solid fourth.

Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation.

No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere.

Oh, to be a child again…

Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.”

Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride.

My, how times have changed.

It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison.

Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now.

And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul?

Bringing Home Medals East Islip High School’s girls varsity winter track and field team earned several medals at the League 3 championship meet on January 22nd at the Suffolk West Indoor Arena at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus. A field of more than 800 athletes from the 10 high schools in League 3 competed in the event.

Senior Jackie Ginty won the gold medal in the 55-meter dash, setting a new Suffolk County League 3 championship meet record. Eighthgrader Hannah Smalley

earned fifth-place in the 1,000-meter run. The 4 x 200 relay team of Mary Kate Carroll, Jackie Ginty, Katie Ginty and Bridget Welch placed second, winning silver medals.

The team met with similar success two weeks later at the Feb. 5 Suffolk small schools championship meet, also held at Suffolk West Indoor Arena. In the 55-meter dash, Jackie Ginty won the silver medal while her sister Katie Ginty finished fourth. In the 1,000-meter run, Smalley again came in fifth while Christie Czjaka finished in eighth

place. Buse Dukyu took ninth place in the shot put.

The 4 x 200 relay team of Carroll, the Ginty sisters and Welch, and the 4 x 400 relay team of Courtney Conway, Czjaka, Sarah DiPrima and Smalley both took fifth place in their respective races. The entire team finished in 11th place out of the 31 schools competing.

“Congratulations to all of our girls track athletes,” said coach Mike Drozd.

“They did a great job for a very young team, and I wish them good luck at the state qualifier meet next Monday.”

Museum Quality Sarah Hillman, a senior at East Islip High School and Lily Gilmore , a freshman at West Islip High School are about to see their artwork hanging in a museum.

Matthew Russell Polidoro of East Islip successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on August 15th, 2016, officially making him the 68th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip and Islip Terrace.

Matthew’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, March 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip.

Matthew is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Matthew has served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide – where has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements, and also served as a Den Chief to the Cub Scouts in Pack 205, East Islip.

Matthew has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a summer camper for four seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains in Ft. Ann, NY and participated in many weekend campout with Troop 205 on and off Long Island, in a total of 65

camping nights. Matthew was also elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Matthew has actually earned 30 merit badges. The Service Project that Matthew developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was producing wood signs for each room number and teacher nameplates on all the classroom doors at Timber Point Elementary School, East Islip.

As Matthew reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “What I’ve learned in Scouting will set me apart from my peers.

Scouting has taught me leadership skills, critical problem solving skills and character development skills that I will need in college and beyond.

It has also showed me that with hard work and determination anything is possible. Scouting has definitely prepared me for the challenges of life.”

Sales Simulation Islip High School students enrolled in Renee Clock’s business ownership and marketing course recently created their own retail businesses; in the process, they learned about the steps required to open their companies and design their retail stores on the computer.

Before the business simulation began, students

were taught about the product life cycle, advertising, utilization of color schemes to entice others to buy a product, inventory control, startup costs and the effects of supply and demand on cost. The simulation phase entailed students buying and selling their products – using mock paper money – during class and recording

all financial transactions using Excel worksheets.

Using their acquired business ownership skills, students competed to see who would make the most revenue.

Students who complete the business ownership and marketing class earn three college business credits through SUNY Farmingdale.

PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - Recently, Legislator Barraga presented Ryan David Maziarz from Islip, with a proclamation in recognition for obtaining the designation of Eagle Scout. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must exhibit leadership, talent, character and perseverance.

Some of the challenges that the students have participated in include designing a realistic spider web only using dental floss, a piece of paper

and a scissor; building a straw structure that could support a tennis ball above the table for 15 seconds or more and planning the most efficient way to build the longest paper chain in a certain amount of time.

“It’s absolutely amazing what these students are able to create when given the opportunity to explore, problem solve, collaborate and create,” said Bromberg.

East Islip High School’s varsity boys and girls bowling teams won their respective Suffolk County championship titles at the February 4th competition held at Sayville Lanes.

The boys team, led by coach Bob Cheadle, started out with a three-game morning session, scoring 1,214; 1,114 and 1,198 for a total of 3,556, which gave them a 251-pin lead.

It was the highest scoring three-game set in Suffolk this year, averaging 237 per bowler. Senior Vinny Altman’s 299 score in game 3 was the highest for the entire tournament. In the three-game afternoon session, the team scored 1,052; 1,074 and 1,048 for a total of 3,174, averaging 212 per bowler. The team’s total for the tournament was 6,730, for an average of 224.3 per bowler. They won by 218 pins, earning their third county championship in the last five years.

Over the series, individual scores in six games were tallied by Christie (1,265 for a 210.8 average), Kreush (972 for a 194.4 average), Melissa Mavrich (1,281 for a 213.5 average), Bocamazo (1,293 for a 215.5 average) and Murphy (1,224 for a 204 average), and scores in five for Spina (1,372 for a 228.6 average).

The team’s totals were 1,080 in game 1; 1,078 in game 2; 1,136 in game 3; 1,027 in game 4; 1,112 in game 5 and 1,053 in game 6 for a six-game total of 6,486, beating secondplace Middle Country (6,260) by 226 pins.

In a joyful twist, East Islip siblings James Spina and Julianna Spina – both high bowlers for their teams – won county championships on the same day. They and their teammates will have the opportunity for further glory as they move on to compete in the state championships in Rochester on March 4th.

Trio Signs On East Islip High School seniors Kyle Fleitman, Chris Higgins and Kyle Nunez – all standouts on the varsity football team – signed National Letters of Intent on February 1st for National Signing Day. The three Redmen will resume their gridiron careers this fall as they continue their educations.

Fleitman, a quarterback and free safety, will attend Marist College in Poughkeepsie, where he will major in business. As a member of the Redmen, he

was named All-Long Island and All-County.

“Marist was the best fit for me, all around,” said Fleitman.

Higgins, a linebacker and tight end, will attend Stony Brook University, where he plans to major in business or physical therapy. At East Islip, he was recognized as an All-County and AllDivision player.

“I fell in love with the school,” Higgins said of Stony Brook. “It’s great for friends and family to attend games, and the coaches

and facilities are great.”

Nunez, an outside lineman, will also attend Stony Brook, where he plans to major in business.

During his East Islip career, he earned All-State, All-Long Island, All-County and All-Division honors.

“It’s a top-notch academic and athletic school, and Stony Brook plays my style of football,” said Nunez of his choice.

“It’s also close to home, so my parents can watch the games.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Suffolk County Senior Citizen Advisory Board jointly announced that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

The award recognizes a senior citizen who has significantly contributed to other seniors and residents in a meaningful and important way – either as an advocate, role model, leader or volunteer. This impact can be felt either countywide or in one of Suffolk County’s local communities.

“I encourage our residents to take the opportunity to nominate a senior they know that has made a difference throughout our region,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Senior of the Year is a special

Recycling Collection Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island, in partnership with the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, is collecting used bicycles and sewing machines on Saturday, April 1st (rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Ethical Society, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower). Items collected will be refurbished by the international project Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace and sent to developing communities overseas.

Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item.

The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle.

A donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $10 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site.

This is the 14th bike/ sewing machine collection

organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island and the second time it has been cosponsored by the Ethical Society.

Huntington resident Kathy WilliamsGing was the first to suggest a bicycle collection to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. She learned of Pedals for Progress from a friend in New Jersey. Kathy says:” I lived in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in 1971 and 1972 without a vehicle.

I learned first hand what it was like to depend on public transportation all of the time. Having a bicycle makes life easier in many ways: getting to work or school, going to the market or reaching the clinic.”

Since beginning this collection, RPCV of LI has collected 1294 bicycles and 100 sewing machines.

Floral Park’s Alison Pratt, who is the coordinator of the drive at the Ethical Society in Garden City, says the collection is an expression of the values of the Ethical Society to do what we can to help people to live their best lives.

“Donating a used bike or idle sewing machine is an easy way to make a huge difference in the life of

someone who doesn’t have the resources we do,” she says.

Pedals for Progress collects bicycles and sewing machines annually and transfers this material wealth to those more needy. To date, more than 149,000 bicycles and 3,500 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. In these countries the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults. These bikes provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting product to market and accessing health care and other services. Sewing machine shipments help initiate educational programs and generate income opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach for many people.

Steady employment for adults is vital to the development and success of struggling communities.

Winter Break Programs Learning about nature through fun events is on the Winter Break menu at Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Center this month with two great programs.

First there’s Morning of Nature: Music and Storytelling for kids ages 3 to 5 from February 20th and 21st, 10 to 11:30 a.m., with Johnny (“Mr. C”) Cuomo who will include singing, dancing, creating and moving to music followed by storytelling. This program is geared toward children of all abilities with

their caregivers as well as those children with special needs. Johnny is local teacher, musician and naturalist who specializes in programming for children in early childhood through young adulthood.

Cost is $65 pp for all 3 days (Per day pricing: $35 pp) 15 person minimum; 20 person maximum.

The second program offered is Teepee Ted of the Traveling Wilderness Museum for ages 6 to 9 from February 21st to 23rd, 10 a.m. to 12 noon and includes learning about how Indians lived as settlers

on Long Island, wilderness survival, how to use bow and arrows, making the tools and toys of native children and stringing jewelry. Cost is $90 for all 3 days (Per day pricing: $35 pp) Minimum participants, 10.
