PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - Recently, Legislator Barraga presented William P. Weiss with a proclamation in recognition for obtaining the designation of Eagle Scout. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must exhibit leadership, talent, character and perseverance. William’s project was to construct and install shelving in three rooms at the Seatuck Environmental Center in Islip.

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently presented eight young women from Troop 1177 with their Girl Scout Silver Awards at a special ceremony commemorating their achievements. The girls worked individually and as a group to become educated on social issues and pressures facing young residents in the Islip community, including self-harm,

health and wellness, LGBT topics, suicide prevention and bullying. The girls then organized and hosted a seminar where parents and children could obtain information about these issues and the organizations that exist for anyone in need of support. Internship Program The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is excited to announce a new Internship Program available at the park in the areas of daily operations, animal handling, education and office management. All current college students interested in the fields of hospitality, veterinary medicine, other sciences such as biology or business and marketing are encouraged to apply. As part of the park’s latest employment opportunities, Long Island Game Farm is also issuing a call to seniors, stay-athome parents or part-time workers to join its team on a volunteer basis. The park is currently hiring interns and volunteers to tend to the following areas of the park: • Ticket Booth Operations • Animal-Related Shows and Programming – on the main stage • Lectures and Presentations – focused

For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood

experiences. Think of it… what you do right now could determine what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr. King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young

people to dream big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we want parents and teachers to remember.” A noted researcher and author, Dr. Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with emphasis on minority participation and performance. He was recently named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. His latest book is Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement.

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

Cinderella Sets Beginning last November, students enrolled in East Islip High School’s musical theater technology class began production on the sets for this year’s East Islip Middle School musical, “Cinderella.” In this full-year art elective course, taught for the past two years by Toniann Mannino, students create the set design and production for the high school Drama Club production as well as the middle school and high school musicals.

Staying after school when possible, students built an impressive set for the middle school’s actors, comprised of a 12-foot castle with rotating 8-foot sides. The castle transforms into Cinderella’s house interior, a town square and a clock tower. They also constructed a platform for the musical’s royal thrones, and assisted on rehearsal and show nights to move the set as needed for scene changes to ensure the success of the musical. “We begin each musical by drawing out our ideas

two-dimensionally,” said Mannino. “Once our designs are approved by the musical’s director, we begin production. The students cut every piece of wood, hammer every nail and paint every detail until set completion. My students are very talented and dedicated to creating an amazing set and I am extremely proud of them.” “Cinderella” will be playing on Friday, February 5th, and Saturday, February 6th, at 7 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium.

LIGF President Diane Novak and her daughter Melinda Novak, Vice President of LIGF, are being honored for their animal education efforts through programs at the zoo, as well as for their support of NSHR. “We are truly thrilled to be honored with this recognition and award,” says Melinda Novak. “Everyone at the park works especially hard to inspire educational values for our visitors – young and old – and to maintain the safety and health of our animals. Our interactive experiences, combined with the overall passion of our staff, encourages others to become global citizens and to promote animal welfare. North Shore Horse Rescue is a great example of professional advocacy and we are delighted to receive such an honor.” Founded by Laurel Palermo and Tom Renzetti in 2002, NSHR began as a small boarding facility known as Gold Rush Farms. The pair rescued their first horse, Phoenix, in 2003 after finding the five-year-old mustang mare pregnant and neglected, which ultimately led to the formation of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. NSHR relies solely on its 100 percent

volunteer base to operate the facilities each day and support of its continued mission of saving the lives of abandoned, abused and unwanted horses, many of which are up for slaughter. The ultimate mission of the organization is to find loving, informed homes for these gentle giants, while also committing to allowing permanent residents to live out their lives in a safe, stressfree environment. Funded in part by grants from the ASPCA, the farm is also verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. The North Shore Horse Rescue’s Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala includes a sit-down dinner, with a cocktail hour and subsequent reception. Dress attire is requested. held at Northport High School on January 22nd, featured the largest horn ensemble in the world, prompting Guinness Book officials to attend to record the event. “It was such a fun, musical and educational

Thirteen outstanding East Islip High School musicians were selected to perform at the annual New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education All-County concert, held on November 20th at Huntington High School. NYSCAME’s All-County program showcases the best 11th- and 12th-grade musicians in Suffolk

County to perform in bands, choruses and orchestras. SERVing Students Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter wants to remind residents of a unique opportunity to receive college tuition reimbursement while at the same time providing an invaluable service to their community. The Suffolk Educational program for Retention in the Volunteer Emergency Services (“SERVES”) program provides tuition reimbursement to studentvolunteers for their service in Suffolk County volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies. The program was created as an incentive to recruit and retain members. In exchange, student-volunteers are eligible to obtain tuition reimbursement based

upon grade point average (“GPA”) and fulfillment of established service requirements in a County volunteer fire department, volunteer fire company or volunteer EMS Agency. “There is currently a critical need for new members at local fire departments and at volunteer Emergency Medical Services Agencies. I can’t think of a more meaningful and selfless way to advance one’s own education while at the same time, providing a critical service to their community,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The program provides tuition reimbursement

to student-volunteers for their service in Suffolk County for up to 120 credit hours attained at a New York State Education Department approved college or university within Suffolk County. East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization Career Academy students successfully participated in the preliminary event of the annual Virtual Enterprises International business plan competition, held on January 15th at Farmingdale State College, earning a spot in the next round. East Islip’s six-person team, known as VE Connected, included Haley Abesamis, Alaina Daly,

Melissa Marra, Michelle Suter, Sean Touhy and Crystal Vessalico. “These six students did an amazing job with their presentation and an outstanding job answering questions from the judges after the presentation was completed,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “These students had to do two presentations that day in front of two different groups of judges. Then the scores from the two

presentations were used to decide which teams would move on to the next level.” More than 40 virtual business firms competed this year for the top seven spots, seeking to move on to the semifinals at the American Portfolios Financial Services building in Holbrook. Of those seven, two will be chosen to take part in the final phase, the national competition on April 17th.

Support Group St. Mary’s Parish in East Islip is offering a free eightweek support group for adults who are struggling to cope with the death of a loved one. Registration is required for this group, which

RETIREE HONORED - After serving Suffolk County for 48 years in the Police Department Detective Lieutenant Thomas O’Heir has decided to retire effective February 2nd. In order to honor him for his service, Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented him with a proclamation with the County Seal fixed upon it to recognize his long-time service to the community.
