St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School has announced that their Spring Musical for this year will be Disney’s The Little Mermaid. St. John’s will be the first Catholic High School on Long Island to perform “The Little Mermaid,” as its rights were only recently released. Opening night is scheduled for March 4th but there is already a sense of excitement among the students, faculty, and staff. “We are very excited to perform Disney’s The Little Mermaid on stage! Our directors, actors, dancers and singers are practicing with great enthusiasm and looking forward to providing their audiences with their very best performances!” stated Principal Nan Doherty. The Musical Producer, Mr. Vincent Whitfield, also expressed his excitement over the production, “St. John the Baptist DHS is both pleased and excited to present the full stage version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. This wonderful story of love, sacrifice and family will
take us on a journey from a prince’s ballroom to the exciting world that exists “under the sea!” We invite you to join us for this family experience with beloved songs, special effects, and delightful characters.” Two seniors, Miranda Cooper and Jillian Graffagnino, have been dual cast in the role of Ariel. When asked about being dual cast as Ariel, the two seniors stated,“It is very exciting to be playing the role of Ariel together. We are so impressed with everyone’s hard work and commitment so far and can’t wait to see the show come together.” Historically, St. John’s has enjoyed a rich tradition
of success with their Spring Musical. Several St. John’s graduates have gone on to perform in major productions all of over Long Island, on Disney’s Cruise Lines, and on Broadway. St. John’s performers are annually nominated for a variety of different Teeny awards, have received nominations to the prestigious Gershwin Awards Program in New York City, and have participated in the National High School Music Theatre Awards. All are invited to come out to see St. John’s production of The Little Mermaid at 7:30 p.m. on March 4th, 5th, and a 2 p.m. performance on March 6th.

Here’s Hoping Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to
say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Good teachers have made an impact on Joel. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” Joel wrote in the letter. He hopes that his support will bring awareness to the need for rigorous arts education options such as LIHSA. The afternoon promises to
be freewheeling and funloving. Joel will be spinning yarns, playing music and offering snippets of advice to the aspiring musicians in the house. LIHSA instructors, who are all working professionals in the arts, focus on cultivating their students’ talents and building skills towards a career pathway in the arts. Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-
way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Islip High School hosted its third annual Science Olympiad invitational tournament on December 12th, drawing teams from 55 schools from across Long Island, upstate New York, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. More than 800 students competed in events focused on areas in science and engineering, including the 23 national Science Olympiad events, the two New York State trial events and two fun trivia events. Currently the only tournament of its kind on Long Island at the high school level, this invitational event was sponsored by Long Island Stem Hub, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Molloy College and Stony Brook University. Cooperative Collections Patriotic students at East Islip Middle School’s Builders Club have continued to find ways to honor those who have served in the U.S. military, both veterans and currently deployed service personnel.
Most recently, the club worked cooperatively with middle school teachers Melissa Henderson and Barbara Huether, running class collections, creating cards and decorating boxes for two Marine Corps units overseas. Shipping was
provided by several parent volunteers and school staff members. The Builders Club students were also invited to American Legion Post 94 in Babylon, where they thanked the veterans. Companies, community organizations and residents are invited to get creative to make landmarks, main streets, buildings and homes “Go Red” to kick off February’s American Heart Month. “This is such a simple way to make a difference in our community. Every red heart, red ribbon or red dress in a store window reminds women, and all of us, how important our hearts are. Heart healthy should be our main priority in February and all year long to prevent our number one killer,” said Dr. Scott Schubach, President of the Long Island American Heart Association Board of Directors and Chairman of the Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular

Each year on February 11th (2/11), United Way launches a statewide initiative 2-1-1 to educate communities about the valuable free, online directory of health and human services’ agencies and programs available in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Long Island Database is updated and managed daily and provides website visitors with detailed information on more than 10,000 community resources for help and assistance in a range of areas. In addition to the full database, there are also special searches for specific populations including veteran’s services, services for those who are developmentally disabled and their caregivers and informational updates during weather emergencies. This information, as well as a community calendar of events, can be viewed through multimedia platforms including Facebook and Twitter. United Way of Long Island coordinates the LI region and call center and the Middle Country Public Library maintains and updates the database that provides the information for the call center.
