The Islip Public Schools Office of Fine and Performing Arts is proud to announce the selection of 41 students to perform in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association AllCounty Festival. The 41 studentmusicians were selected for All-County based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festivals and teacher recommendations. The students are selected from hundreds of applicants from districts across Suffolk County. Suffolk’s most talented students are preparing for the festival with their school music teachers, and will then participate in a series of rehearsals that culminate in concerts on March 8th and 9th. Free Screenings Available Free lung cancer screenings using low dose CT scans are now available at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital for high risk smokers and former smokers. If lung cancer is diagnosed early there is a higher rate for successful treatment and survival. Individuals should consider having a screening if they are 55 to 74 years old and have smoked for 30 pack years or more and currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years. Pack years are

calculated by multiplying the average number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years a person has smoked. Lung cancer is the leading single cancer killer in the U.S. and cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor in the development of lung cancer. Smokers and former smokers should talk to their primary care physician to see if they qualify for a free screening. If you qualify, you will be given a prescription for

the CT scan and asked to contact Mather’s Lung Cancer Screening Program at 631.476.2803 to schedule a low dose CT scan. A national study found that patients who were diagnosed by screening with a low dose CT scan had a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths as compared to those screened with standard chest x-ray. An influential panel of medical experts has recommended annual lung cancer screenings

for high risk smokers and former smokers. The panel estimated the screenings could prevent as many as 20,000 deaths a year. Mather’s board certified radiologists use an advanced 320-slice CT scanner to perform the test at the lowest possible radiation dose. Mather records and provides you with a copy of your radiation dose. Should you need to return to Mather for another CT scan, we record that dose and track your cumulative exposure.

Further, we are accredited by the American College of Radiology and The Joint Commission, a national organization that assesses healthcare provider quality and patient safety. A suspicious nodule detected by the screening does not necessarily indicate lung cancer. According to current studies more than 95 percent of initially suspicious lung nodules are non-cancerous. Reach Out To LICC According to a briefing released on January 9th, 2014 by the Department of Veteran Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide every day; and young male veterans (under the age of 30) are three times more likely to commit suicide than civilian males in the same age range. The statistics have also increased for female

veterans in all age brackets as well. “Long Island Crisis Center is paying close attention to these numbers,” stated Executive Director Linda Leonard. “One important fact pointed out in the study is that for those veterans receiving care through the VHA, suicide is down by 30 percent. However, for

those veterans not enrolled in a program, suicide has soared by 60 percent. That is truly alarming. We know we can play a pivotal role in helping these veterans receive the help they need.” Officials at the Department of Veteran Affairs do not have definitive reasons for these disturbing statistics, however, they do point

to post traumatic stress disorder, combat injuries and the difficulties facing young veterans in reentering civilian life. “The Crisis Center’s hotlines are staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week with highly trained counselors who can provide short-term counseling, support, and resources and referrals. Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely

blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake

me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can

handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being

judged by a stranger that has the power to influence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation and get you through the process. It is their job to ensure that the college has a steady influx of capable young minds. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Both you and the interviewer are merely vessels for advancement.

At the 27th Annual Rocky Gilmore Classic wrestling tournament on January 4th, host East Islip finished third and walked away with six finalists and 15 place winners, while Erik Adon was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. Top-ranked senior Dennis Ferro pinned all three of his opponents to win the 152-pound crown. Ferro, who was third in Suffolk last year, improved to 20-0 with 16 pins when he matted Brentwood’s Jamie Rivas in 1:45.

Also ranked No. 1, grappler Adon used a series of takedowns versus Sachem East’s No. 2-ranked Mike Pistone to come away with a 6-3 decision at 170 pounds. Adon, who was second in Suffolk last year, has a record of 18-0. Senior Justin Rigo pinned Brian Reyes of Brentwood in 0:59 to win the 195-pound title, improving to 17-2 on the season. Junior Jesse Dellavecchia, who finished

fourth in the state tournament, faced Tim Johnson of Harborfields, a two-time All-Suffolk County place winner. Dellavecchia used a takedown in all three periods and a secondperiod reversal to win an 8-3 decision over Johnson, becoming the third wrestler in the 27-year history of the tournament to win four titles. Cleary School students in Heather Toomey’s Studio Art class at East Islip High School recently created a sign to hang above the Cleary School for the Deaf classrooms, consisting of the word “Cleary” spelled out in American Sign Language. “I always try to connect various disciplines to the art curriculum,” explain Toomey. “In Studio Art, I have students choose a

word and then look at the American Sign Language alphabet and draw the hands that spell out that word. After outlining the contour line drawing of the hands, they use oil pastels with analogous colors.” After a group of Cleary students completed that annual project, she became inspired and decided to take it one step further. “I thought about creating more artwork

as school beautification,” said Toomey. “The Cleary students all worked together on their mural and used the Cleary colors for their background.” “I liked developing my drawing skills and am proud to be a Cleary student,” said Jonatan Caravantes. Added classmate Leana Booker, “We have great skills and are proud to see the sign hanging in the hallway.”

and polyurethane. “One of the main priorities of the Technology Club this year is to design and create projects for both the school and community,” explained Heyanka, who is in his second year at the middle school. “My students are able to utilize critical thinking and problemsolving skills in order to develop solutions in hopes of improving their environment. I am very proud of the students in the Technology Club and hope that the sign will greet people entering the building for years to

come.” “These technology courses are exactly what students need to keep them involved and interested in learning,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the district’s director of business, technology and family consumer science. “Brian Heyanka is definitely a great asset to the district and the community. He is always looking for new community projects that will help our neighbors and showcase the work that the technology team does with the students.”

Young Chefs Compete Students from East Islip Middle School and East Islip High School cooked up a storm at a pair of recent culinary competitions held at Bloomingdale’s department store at Huntington’s Walt Whitman Shops mall. The four East Islip Middle School students from last year’s prize-winning Long Island Iron Chef Competition team – Alyssa Alli, Brianna Fiorello, Julia Lambert and Autumn Nelson – first visited Bloomingdale’s on November 30th in a showcase of their culinary skills. Visitors shopping in the store were invited to come up to taste-test the quartet’s meal. “The crowds were absolutely amazed by the way our students prepared the food and how efficiently they cleaned up after all of the meals were complete,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the district’s director of family and consumer science. “They received high marks for the delicious meals they provided the guests. The employees at Bloomingdale’s were also very impressed with the professionalism that these students showed during their presentation.” Under the leadership of their adviser, family and consumer science teacher Patricia Emmons-Fritz, East Islip’s young chefs participated again in the next chapter of the Iron Chef

Competition on Dec. 13, also held at Bloomie’s. The middle school team chose one member, Julia Lambert, to be their representative in the final event, while East Islip High School was represented by junior Brandon Cortez. The ingredients – potatoes, tangerines, gingerbread cookies, eggs and cheese – and cooking equipment

They were allowed to bring one item to add to the meal. Family, friends and East Islip Superintendent Linda J. Rozzi were there to cheer on the East Islip team as they battled against a number of other school districts, and everyone in the audience was invited to taste the food served up by Cortez and Lambert. While they did not win, the teams received gifts from Bloomingdale’s for participating. “It was a fantastic event,” said Malinowitzer. “Our students were truly professional and did a great job cooking and preparing their healthy meals from scratch. Everyone unanimously loved the food and took home copies of the recipe to make for their own families.” For Lambert, it was just the beginning. Dubbed the “Singing Chef,” the aspiring singer and actress – she was recently cast in an upcoming episode of the “Nurse Jackie” TV series – looks forward to continuing her culinary explorations as she prepares to enter high school this fall. (SBPLI) will present the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments on February 1st and 2nd at Central Islip Senior High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip, from 7 a.m. to 5

p.m. The tournaments are being sponsored by the Central Islip Union Free School District Board of Education and Craig G. Carr, Superintendent, Central Islip UFSD. This year’s challenge is NATURE’S FURYSM, where children in elementary and middle school will research and present their own creative solutions to one of the largest international

issues - natural disasters - which have affected nearly three billion people globally. Children and their coaches will utilize robots to solve a set of natural disaster missions. Some will include positioning an evacuation sign, clearing an airplane’s runway of debris, and developing solutions that could be used in the future. The FLL Tournament is

an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. Currently, there are 23,000 teams from 80 countries worldwide that participate in FLL tournaments. On Long Island, 110 teams and more than 1,000 students will participate on

Qualifying Tournament February 1st and 2nd. “We cannot wait to see what these students have in store for this year’s FLL tournament,” says Joani Madarash, Executive Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “It is exciting to see the creativity these children possess as they complete their missions that are required in the tournament. We hope

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
